Ok please don't shoot me if this is a dumb question but is donating blood a form of fasting? From my understanding you are supposed to give up something when you fast so does donating blood count or does it have to be something you give up on a daily basis as opposed to once a month or so?

It generally is food. However I know of other christians who choose to fast things that are a distraction from preventing their spirit man from getting stronger such as music, television etc.

If you have anytime read God's Chosen Fast by Arthur Wallis. It is gives alot of biblically help based scriptures with regards to questions about fasting.

Fasting from a spiritual stand point must be mix with prayer in otherwords Christians fast and pray at the same time. Fasting in the greek means "not to eat". As we look at the different ways to fast in the Bible we see how Jesus fast, Esther fast, David and many others. Fasting and prayer only purpose is to become closer to God and hear from God this forms a initmate relationship with Him. The results of fasting and praying is many, many things such as healthing, prosperity etc.

So giving blood would be a service to the community which indirectly ties into your overall work for God. It is demonstration of love and sacrafice but it is not the Bibilical model to bring you closer to God. The act of kindess for doing it would be the giving of the blood itself. So, no giving blood is not fasting. Many people give up something such as food, tv, solid foods, sweets etc. For TV sacrafice for example one would be praying and reading their Bible during the time they would be watching the show or you would just make sure that sometime during your fasting you make time for praying and reading God's word. The sacrafice must be directly related to GOD so that you will get closer to Him. Reading the Bible and praying are the main ways to get closer to God. When you mix fasting with this formula it takes the prayer and reading the Bible to higher level giving you the utlimate power of God. Getting close to God shieids us from falling into sin easily so we become more obedient to God's word and His purpose for us being on this earth. :)

Excellent book to read on fasting. Also searching the internet by using "fasting and prayer" together as a search.
