Questions for those who flatiron..

I'd like to buy a ceramic flatiron and was wondering what you ladies use?
Also is it possible to get a smooth finish by airdying (I will be drying it during the day...then flatironing that evening)or will I get better results blowdrying hair that is 90% dry first? If blowdrying where did you all find an ionic dryer? I also want to know if you think once a week is too much if I don't blowdry first? I will still shampoo 3 times a week and wear protective styles after 2 of the shampoos. Sorry for all the questions.

I use the Jilbere big flat iron. I usually blowdry my hair so that my roots are dry, if I try to flat iron it when it's too damp, it hot near my scalp. But to get a straight look by airdrying I have to put my hair into big braids in order to reset the curl pattern, then when I take my braids out, I have to comb carefully and section each part of my hair to get it straight. I usually use a brush too in order to do that.

I have the big Jilbere ceramic iron also and I'm ready to get rid of it.
It snags my hair something fierce now! It didn't do that when it was new last year. Maybe I'm impatient and need to use narrower sections of hair. I don't know. There's just something different about that iron and the results I get now.

I remember someone recommending the slimmer Jilbere because it's made not to snag your hair.

Good luck, girl.

I use the jilbere ceramic. I always air dry. When my hair is not in braids I air dry with my hair out until it is damp then I smooth it into a bun and but on a silk scarf to hold it down over night. When I wake up it is usually dry then I flat iron it and it get super silky (better than any relaxer I have ever had). I am mostly 3c.

Speaking of the large Jilbere flat iron, the last time I went to Sally's, the sales girl told me that they've received so many complaints about the large Jilbere flat iron that they are under orders to take back any of them that customers want to return, whether accompanied with a receipt or not. Why this would be the case with the large ones, I don't know. The little ones are fine; I have one and though I barely ever use it, it's never given me any problems.

I use a Unil ceramic flat iron. It has ceramic plates, not ceramic coating. When I use it I airdry a majority of the time. On occasion I will blowdry. You don't have to work as hard when you blowdry first. But you can blowdry when your hair is almost dry. Before I put braids in I was doing the flat ironing once weekly. I did not notice any damage to my hair. I think it is ok if it is done properly and you do plenty of conditioning. You will just need to find the lowest heat setting needed to effectively straighten your hair. This iron will not scorch your hair even at the highest setting. I love this iron because it helps give you that silky straight without all of the damage.

Sweetcocoa,
I think you can get the smooth silky results you're looking for by using the flat-iron on your air-dried hair without blow-drying first.

Maybe the ceramic coating is wearing off around the edges? Or there could be buildup on it. Either one could cause it to start snagging.

I KNEW I should have bought the skinny Jilbere.

I bought the small Jilbere ceramic iron yesterday at Sally's and it is going back today. I used it yesterday after I washed my hair and I am not pleased with the results. It did not get my hair flat enough. I'm going back to my gold n hot flat iron.

@Sweetcocoa:

The $29.99 sale ends today! The model # is JB2555. I really like this iron. I bought one for my teenage cousins Saturday.

SVT, that's the problem I had with the larger Jilbere iron so I returned it. I don't need anything pulling my hair out. I now use a Wigo ceramic iron which I love. It's smaller than the large Jilbere but the plates are 2 1/2" so I can do larger sections. It heats up quick and does an excellent job on setting 1.

I just bought the skinny jilbere and i have yet to use it. I had to test it out on my lil sis' hair first, tho her hair is relaxed to straight when wet. It turned out ok but her ends looked damaged, that may have been due to her relaxer applications but who knows. anyway when I've flat ironed in the past, I always put my wet hair in a ponytail and put a large roller on the length, pull on a silk scarf and go to bed.

Sassy,

What's your routine for flat ironing? I think I'll go see if my Sally's has any more of the skinny Jilbere's Thanks.

I'm a complete novice when it comes to straightening my hair. It takes me soooooo long. And all the smoke makes me very nervous... I only flat iron when I want to clip my ends. I am trying to learn how to press my hair with it, though. The electric hot comb was a bust--I couldn't even get my hair through the teeth!

I shampoo, condition, apply a creamy leave-in like New Image or Dudley's PCA . Then I apply Carolyn Gray's Healthier Hair in a Bottle oil. I make little bantu type knots and let my hair air dry. (I tried blow drying, but I felt like that was just too much heat. My hair did come out straighter, though.)

Then I undo each knot, apply a teeny dab of pressing creme and flat iron each section. I'm still looking for a product that will hold a press without being greasy. I've tried Dudley's Creme Press, Ultra Sheen Creme Satin Press and Just For Me Pressing Oil. Vitale Body-Bounce is nice, but my press reverts within a few hours!

I think the reason why the larger snags so much is that the bottom plates move slightly and if your hair gets caught where it moves it will snag fo'sho. I have the large one and I'm not ready to give it up yet. I haven't snagged my hair on it.

I feel you on the pressing comb. I wish I could return mine but you know those hood BSS (beauty supply stores) are. I heard that the pressing wax helps but it sounds heavy. I also heard that Ultra Sheen Satin Pressing Creme works but I haven't use it myself. For one, they don't list the ingredients which irks me. Two, it's kinda hard to find in my area but I'm not beat.
