Hey everyone. /images/graemlins/smile.gif I dont really post too often but I noticed everyone here has one thing in common: Everyone has made a commitment to longer, healthier hair. I was just wondering what made everyone decide to take better care of their hair? For me it was after my hair broke off badly. That was like a wake up call for me. What made you decide to devote yourself to longer, healthier hair? Just curious.

Well, I was looking for things to buy for my hair online when I ran across Longhairlovers.com. I was so fascinated just reading about all the things people were doing to their hair that I got drawn in. I never have actually aspired to have long hair until after seeing so many women who really cared for their hair. Their knowledge was unbelievable and it inspired me. I actually began to believe that I could have long hair and really was curious as to how I would look as I haven't had very long hair since before high school. I've been cutting my hair off and on ever since high school. I guess just knowing how things "could" be, made me want to check it out! Now it's like...my hobby. *smiles*

Actually I've always wanted longer hair, just never knew that I could have it. And one day I was looking for a way to stop my ends from breaking and i came across the afrohair.com board. After I learned that there was no miracle hairdress that could stop my split ends I made a decision to try to take better care of it. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I, personally, have always dreamed of long hair /images/graemlins/smile.gif I want to start taking better care of my hair. I am 16 years old, so I kinda figured, the early I start taking care of my hair, the better /images/graemlins/cool.gif

I already see a HUGE difference w/ the little things that I have learned on this board! /images/graemlins/grin.gif I can't wait to see my hair by this summer.

Hi Chasney and welcome /images/graemlins/wave.gif

For me it was a combination of things. I could no longer get relaxers due to nerve damage and thought that it would be the end of my dream of having healthier and longer hair. I thought my hair grew longer with relaxers but I have a different view of that now. I have since learned everything possible about my own hair and have been able to reap results that I never dreamed possible. I am a cutter and just cut my hair up to my ears but promised my husband that I will not cut again but will let my hair grow as long as it can grow. Since I am natural I have no complaints. I have no breakage, burns, etc. that I used to have when I was relaxed and I truly believe that regardless of how short I cut my hair, it can grow as long and be as healthy as it was before I cut it. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

That's an excellent question...unfortunately, I don't have an answer. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I stumbled across this board while conducting an unrelated search on essential oils. Prior to finding the board, it never occurred to me that I could grow my hair long AND healthy. (These 2 adjectives just did not exist in the same sentence when I described my hair.)

Anywhoo, I am extremely appreciative of all the advice and support on this board. Thanks everyone. /images/graemlins/drunk.gif

Discovering my very first hair board (BHSGO - Black Hair Super Grow Out in 2000) was what started my committment to longer, healthier hair. I'm so glad I stumbled onto that web site. /images/graemlins/smile.gif When I think about it now, I hardly remember what in the heck I was doing with my hair prior to that time. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Great question.

I have always wanted longer and healthier hair, and wondered why long hair was easy for some women to attain. I firgured out that it must be the technique, not the products or else everyone would have hair down to their butts just by using "X" product. I was doing a search on the internet for black hair care infomation when I stumbled onto the hairboards. I used to lurk on the Longhairlovers boards forever until joining LHCF.

Oh, did I mention that I hate being told that I can't do something? I got tired of people telling me that I couldn't grow long hair. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Hi Chasney01, This is a good question /images/graemlins/smile.gif My daughter was complaining about her hair being so short, and the other girls hair being long. So, I made a commitment to her and myself to work on growing our hair. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have always wanted long hair of my own. But was not able to commit to one hair style, I had just about every hair style invented, but was never happy w/ my own hair length so I decided to get serious about growing out and having healthy hair. All the different styles had my hair so damaged and just a mess that I couldn't stand to look at my own hair, so I started doing research online about how to grow long healthy hair stumbled across BHSGO and just did alot of reading to find out what I was doing wrong(let me tell u I was doing EVERYTHING wrong /images/graemlins/smile.gif) it's funny now but, I was my hair worst enemy and didn't know it /images/graemlins/blush.gif Been told by many that long hair is not for everybody, but I refused to accept that. All the women in my family have nice healthy hair so I way can't I? I'm still learning but, I know tons more than I did when I went natural back in 1998, that didn't work. Was natural for close to 4 years but I didn't know how to care for my hair. If I knew then what I know now my hair would be down my back /images/graemlins/frown.gif But, it's never to late to reach my goals.

I use to have really long hair, but it just fell out as I got older. My family always made negative comments about how I ruined my looks, and how my hair is my beauty. I then wanted to do something about it. So I started looking up vitamins and forums. I went to hairboutique.com and read a post about a new site for african-americans and haircare, which was this one. The first thing I had seen was Adrienne's hair. I then decided that I wanted hair like her. Then I read all the post, and was absolutely amazed. I feel like an outkast posting on here because i don't know as much hair knowledge as everybody else, but I'm still learning! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Chasney01 /images/graemlins/wave.gif

For as long as I could remember I always admired those Indian and Spanish women with all that raven black hair many of them that I see have. I don't know, it is something so alluring about a woman with healthy, long locks. In addition, I am concerned about my overall health as well. I reasoned why not press on to my maximum potential in terms of body, soul and spirit? I'm looking forward to being a well-rounded individual, with no area of my life lacking /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had long hair all my life. When I cut it, it would just grow back...no matter what I did to it...till about 3 years ago. For the first time my hair kept breaking off, was thin, would not grow and people noticed my hair was slowly disappearing. I panic and stressed and it got worse. I got online and found the blackhaircareforum. I learned about all the things I was doing wrong trying to correct the problem and the things I was doing wrong that caused the problems to begin with. I joined many other forums...but now I'm down to just this one. But they all taught me how to get my hair healthy again. I wanted my long hair back. I will never take it for granted again.

Hey MsJadu,

Isn't Adrienne's hair definately a good role model? Her hair will definately make a person feel inspired! /images/graemlins/smile.gif I really love how she shows her progress in every photo. Darnit, I'm glad I wrote this because it just reminded me that I need to get batteries for my camera. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I agree Allandra,

I remember when I first joined when we were at the other forum...I WAS CLUELESS! /images/graemlins/smile.gif Now, I can go in and tell some beauticians a thing or two. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey fanatic /images/graemlins/cool.gif
Oh yes, she has definitely inspired me. The others too! It is sad for me to admit, but I use to think that it was impossible for black hair to grow long, unless you have a mixed heritage. Now, that I discovered the site, i learned that that was truly a misconception. I remeber, girls use to tell me(when my hair was longer) you have that good hair, are you a black puerto rican? Now, I learned that growing "good" hair is about educating yourself, to stop being ignorant, and to stop listening to myths.

I definately agree with you about those misconceptions Ms Jadu. People say that same thing to me about my so called "good hair" and I would be looking around thinking, "Who me, you must be terribly mistaken". Like you, I have learned that growth of hair has nothing to do with the texture but has a lot do to with knowledge, products, daily maintenance and perserving the hair. Growing long hair may seem quite profound, for a lot of black women to imagine, but since I have joined this forum, I have learned that there is no myth to it, IT CAN be achieved. Profound, yet simple...Isn't knowledge just GRAND! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

My father is black/Indian, and my mother is the same. My hair is fine, but I still need perms every once and a while. See, though my heritage is mixed, my hair still didn't grow. So I'll be the first to say, that hair texture definitely makes no impact on hair growth. so i agree with you. Where I live the females here, just slap a whole bunch of gel in their hair and call it a day. Plus it is hard to find great products.

Now I can live with that! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

lol. Im sure glad I found this site. I can truly ay that Ive learned alot from everyone. My family thinks Im crazy for reading the site, and going out to try new things. Its all good though because when I grow out my long, healthy hair, all those who thought i was obsessed and crazed, are going to ask me how I did it. I'm just gonna screw up my face, and flick my hair hair.lol

Re: Adrienne\'s Hair

/images/graemlins/smile.gif Yes...I agree. She has "great hair". My goal is to get the healthiness and length she has.

LOL! /images/graemlins/grin.gif You go girl! And...let me tell you, there have been plenty of women on this board where that has actually happened. Now their friends and relatives don't find it so crazy after all. EXAMPLE...My Husband! The man had the nerve to tease me about going on the "Hairclub for Women", but now he can't get enough of using my products and I do mean USING THEM ALL UP! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

For me, I always had long hair and wanted to maintain my hair's health and grow it longer. Most people thought I was crazy, including my own mother (I still think she does but now she's starting to get interested)..Everyone told me that I couldn't grow it any longer than it was unless I had "good hair" or was mixed. The only two people I knew with long hair that wanted longer hair developed a competition with me..It was really sad.. /images/graemlins/frown.gif There wasn't any sisterhood is what I'm trying to say, until I came to this site. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

I started researching on black hair, but it wasn't much info out there. It wasn't until I received Wanakee's brochure that it really sunk in that I COULD grow my hair that long and that I would really need to take care of my hair. However, her brochure promoted her items and not so much teaching you that other products can work as efficiently (because of course it's a business). /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Also, my regime was always about trying something new. I guess looking for that miracle product. I knew about deep conditioning but I really didn't know the difference of some conditioners. For the first time, I'm trying to perfect a regime and really stick to it. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

When I first came to this site, I was a little overwhelmed. I saw that people were friendly, but then I thought I was dedicated, even fanatical about my hair, I felt clueless when I got here. But I saw I wasn't alone and could benefit from all the information given here. I find that there's so many good products and so much information now, that the only problem is deciphering which products/info is best for you. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

My devotion to longer, healthier hair came after I had messed my hair up yet again and just absolutely refused to cut it off and start over. I thought I knew how to take care of my hair. I mean after all I had been watching hair stylist for years, I could do what they did. I messed my own hair up by doing things improperly, overlapping, dying and relaxing on the same day. I just didn't have the "correct" knowledge. I took product information to lightly, doing everything to my hair because black hair is strong, it can take anything. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

When I found this board, I absored the information like a sponge. My hair is looking and feeling better and it has grown!! There is nothing that I would do to my hair now and take so lightly again. I ask questions, I don't care how stupid they sound - somebody always answers. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I always liked long hair but never really fussed too much about it. My hair has always been at about shoulder length to where it is now. Well, one day I was searching online for ideas to maintain natural hair (I never wanted my daughter to get a relaxer) and bumped into Longhairlovers.....that's all she wrote.. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

for me it was my last "trim". I went home with my hair barely touching the bottom of my neck and was so depressed. I found pics of myself with way longer hair and realized I had'nt had my normal length in years and with every "trim" my hair got shorter and shorter. I used to go in for touch up every 12wks and had longer hair but my hairdresser somehow talked me into comming in every 8wks (when I found out that black hair boards existed I was concidering changing it to every 6wks and couldnt remember how I ever made it to 12wks in the first place!) and between that and the trims it got shorter and shorter. I was just in a depressing rut because I knew my hair could get longer. I kept seeing women who had healthy hair short and long and I began wondering why mine didn't have sheen and why I suddenly "needed" a touch up 4wks earlier than normal and why, after not washing for 2wks as my hairdresser said, my hair looked like dull straw that I could barely control even with a relaxer. You have to realize I was using nothing in my hair. No oils, moisturizers, and no deep conditionings when I did wash (which sometimes was every 3wks because I hated how my hair felt after washing). I would just wash, instant condition and blow dry until my hair was a dull frizzy mess that I couldnt even squeeze into a decent ponytail. One night two wks after my Oct. touch up and "trim" I just typed in black hair care and got all these sites! a new world opened up for me! I threw away our blowdryer the next day. no joke. had to buy my hubby another! I used to hate the thought of washing my hair because of how it turned out but now, learning how to airdry and moisturize and condition, I love it! its so easy! i dont remeber the last time I felt good about my hair. I'm beginning to see my length comming back but more so my hair has done a 180 in health. Since I just started a few months ago I know I still have a long road ahead of me but with the support of groups like this one I know I will succeed in my hair goals. thanks guys!

i have actually always taken care of my hair. i had no choice. i've had psoriasis since high school. so i had to wash my hair twice a week. along with washing, i also learned to style it myself really well. my hair always 'looked' healthy. i just used too much heat, which means it broke as fast as it grew. since i've eliminated most of the heat, i'm keeping most of what i grow. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was preparing to come out of braids last year, and I wanted to take better care of my hair. My braid history had been that the length I got always broke off within a month or two, and I couldn't understand why. /images/graemlins/whyme.gif Once after I took braids out, a hairdresser cut my hair to within an inch of its life because he 'couldn't do anything else to it', and I definitely didn't want that to happen again. I stumbled onto this site, and was really inspired by the friendliness, cooperative spirit, and the knowledge here. Reading thru almost every thread, I realized what I was doing wrong; I used poor quality products, too much heat, and didn't wash and deep condition my hair often enough. This board is the singular reason for the healthier state of my hair today. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
