I recently came to the realization that the main reason I wanted to transition was because I hated how my hair looked up until about 3 weeks post-limp and lifeless! Most of us have experienced the relaxer that give that thin, limp, flat look. I've heard that the phyto and Dominican alter ego doesn't do this. How do you avoid the limp lifeless look after your relaxer? I know roller-sets help but what else you got ladies? Do you know of any other relaxers that doesn't cause this 'hair reaction'?

Design Essentials does a great job at relaxing while leaving me with some texture.

I use design essentials as well and it's made a huge difference. I use the low lye one, it's so mild I have to leave it on an extra 5-8 minutes longer than the regular relaxers to get it to the desired straightness, and it still leaves my hair with texture. I love it.

@achangedlife when you say you leave it on for the extra 5-8 min:
do you smooth and then let it sit for the extra 5-8 min?
or
do you smooth the entire time which would include the exta 5-8 min?

I bought mine online, I only found two BSS in my area that has it and sometimes it's hit or miss so I just purchased the 4 lbs tub from beautyofnewyork.com.

When I first used it I would try to complete the whole process in 25 minutes, including smoothing. However I found that by five weeks I looked like I needed a retouch again, with this last touch up it actually took me thirty minutes to finish and by the time I got in the shower it was another 3 minutes. I did notice this time my hair was smoother although still texlaxed. It's only been a week but I have a feeling it's gonna last longer this time.

I did try the sensitive scalp one a couple of times and that one is pretty good too. It will get your hair straight if u prefer it that way, but to me my hair was healthier than with other relaxers, it was more moisturized and stronger. I got so many compliments when I was using that one and I had an easier time going from one retouch to the other cause I didn't have issues with dryness. The only reason I switched to the low lye is because sometimes the BSS was out of it and I had to run around to try to find it somewhere else which I never did, waited a couple of weeks for the BSS to replenish, so I started looking online.

I like the low lye but if I ever go back to being straight I would choose the sensitive scalp one again, that one is no lye. They also make regular lye relaxers in different strengths, either way I don't think u could go wrong.

I also use their products, very moisturizing, for a while their products was all I was using but my bone straight hair was shedding and breaking off so I had to get something for strength but DE is my fave. Frizz and dryness is no longer an issue, and once I trim away the pre design essentials hair weak, limp hair won't be an issue either.

So i guess the extra time wasn't intentional but next retouch if I do end up finishing smoothing and everything by 25 minutes I will let it sit for the extra 5-8 minutes cause that did make a difference.

Also the reason it only seem to last 5 weeks don't have anything to do with dryness but I just think for me I need it a bit straighter. My hair is very course and resistant but yet becomes so weak and thin when fully processed by other relaxers. That's why I think the low lye is good for me. I don't think it will relax straight no matter how long u leave it in, it's not meant to do that, once I find the right processing time for me it'll be perfect. I have about 2 1/2 inches of hair relaxed with DE and my hair looks fuller because of it.

That's true about Phyto. :yep: Indices 1 and 2 gives my fine hair lots of body! Plus I don't have to retouch as often.

I get really good "hang," and I have jaw-length hair.

Design Essentials for professionals, it's not easy to find in BSS, at least not in my area.

I found that once I did the mid protein step and leave the neutralizing shampoo in my hair for a good 20+ minutes the limpness was gone!

Nix08 that's exactly what I do!

Also, Design Essentials Sensitive Scalp relaxer leaves me with some thickness. One of the main reasons I left my stylist was that she switched to Affirm.

I used Phyto 1 it got my hair bone straight, I got more body within a week/my next wash. I'm about 7 weeks maybe 8 weeks post and my hair has too much body:lol:

I use Phyto relaxer and, like @Nix08 and @sunnieb, I do the midstep protein and my hair is NEVER limp. In fact, it just gets thicker with each application.

I think what also helps is to cover the previously relaxed hair with neutralizing shampoo/vaseline. This helps to protect the hair from relaxer runoff.

taz007 you're right...I actually only started the mid protein step once I started this hair journey (first relaxer was in sept or so) so I was able to see how drastically different that steps leaves your hair. Immediately my hair felt heavier and thicker. There was none of that freshly relaxed flatness. I use a reconstructor with SAA as the protein. (not sure if the type of protein makes a difference).

I agree with the mid-protein step as well as using a mild relaxer so all of the texture isn't taken away from the hair. I haven't experienced limp hair since the days of old when I would relax bone straight and shampoo right after rinsing out.

I wanted to use the Design Essentials but couldn't find it anywhere which is why I went with Phyto. I think I'll order the DE sensitive scalp for my next touch up. For slightly more than the phyto I get 8 applications too.

A salon I went to in the late 90s used DE on me and my hair was ah-mazing, can't wait to try it again, thanks for the info ladies :yay:
