I know there is already a thread with this topic, but I don't feel like looking through 100 pages for answers to 3 questions.

Do you retain more length wearing it striaght?

How much breakage do you get wearing it straight compared to natural?

Has your natural curl pattern loosened or changed since you straighten on a regular basis?

Do you retain more length wearing it striaght? I think I do because it helped smooth the cuticles on my ends-which were always frizzy when I used heat less frequently (2-3 x a year), but I also retain as much in weaves or other full protective styles (braids/twists)

How much breakage do you get wearing it straight compared to natural? I can't do the wash n go thing more than a day at a time, it used to knot my hair up (pre-BKT, its a lot better now)

Has your natural curl pattern loosened or changed since you straighten on a regular basis? Slightly but more from the BKT, my new growth is not affected by the flatiron I use FHI on about 190C up to 3ce a month usually 1-2x now- too lazy to do more.

Honestly, yes. It's easier for me to maintain my hair when it's not knotting into itself. I have to conditioner wash my hair everyday to wear my hair unstraightened. But that's not an option during the winter months.

How much breakage do you get wearing it straight compared to natural?

Much less because once again I'm not fighting with my ends.

Has your natural curl pattern loosened or changed since you straighten on a regular basis?

No. My hair started to become noticebly straighter when I used coconut milk or yogurt w/ lime on a weekly basis. So I stopped and my curl pattern has "tightened up" again. Also doing protein treatments like Aphoghee for Damaged Hair or the 2 min stuff make my curls coil too.

I do agree that you have to step up your protein treatments a little more when you wear your natural hair straightened. Aphogee does work well. I find that deep conditioning with steam is great too before flatironing.

Do you retain more length wearing it straight?
It's hard to tell yet -- it's at least the same, possibly more. My answer will be more definite once my hair gets longer, since I didn't have real problems with my coily hair until it was BSL and longer.

How much breakage do you get wearing it straight compared to natural?
A little less, I think.

Has your natural curl pattern loosened or changed since you straighten on a regular basis?
Yes, it's looser. But it's uniform, so it doesn't bother me--meaning I don't have random straight pieces or anything, I just have a lot less shrinkage.

I think I may be going natural. I'm prego so have been thinking of chilling on relaxers during this time. A DC blowout/flatiron straighten's my hair good and lasts a long time.

Do you retain more length wearing it striaght? Yes I do. When I wear it curly, I get more knots on the ends, and it tangles like crazy when it dry.

How much breakage do you get wearing it straight compared to natural?I don't get much breakage, but I will say it's more when it's curly

Has your natural curl pattern loosened or changed since you straighten on a regular basis?
No, as soon as I wet it...the curls pop right back.

I love wearing my hair straight...actually I prefer it. I do love my curls too and the waves my hair makes when I wear pony puffs...but, my hair behaves sooooo much better when straight.

I'm bumping this thread for more replies.. I have really been thinking about wearing my hair straight more often/more regularly but I don't want to sacrifice length or health. I know it can be done.. just want to do it the right way.

Do you retain more length wearing it striaght?
Yes, I do, but that's mostly because I've been on a non-combing regime for the past 6 months. If I straighten, and avoid combing, I retain mroe.

How much breakage do you get wearing it straight compared to natural?
Very little, because straight combined with non-combing = no breakage

Has your natural curl pattern loosened or changed since you straighten on a regular basis?
I'm not sure, I've been doing a mild keratin treatment (softliss) once a month, so I'm not 100% sure what my reversion looks like.

As for as I've noticed, yes

How much breakage do you get wearing it straight compared to natural?

When wearing my hair natural I have to wash it more often, comb it more often, detangle, braid, etc etc. The manipulation causes far more shedding and breakage. When I straighten my hair, there is a slight amount of lost hair from blow drying and the regular amount of shed hairs. The thing about straight hair is that the shed hairs will not tangle up and form ssk's like they will when my hair is worn natural. They slide right on out and I can carry on with my day. I can leave my hair straight for up to two weeks without having to do much more than wrap it and oil my scalp. The low amount of manipulation means for less breakage.

Not at all. When i first went natural I had heat damage from trying to use a wet-to-dry iron. My hair was bone straight in some places. After I big chopped the damage and learned how to press my hair, I have not had any heat damage sense. My hair snaps back from bone straight to 4a kinky afro on wash day like nothing ever happened. :)

Do you retain more length wearing it striaght?
Yes, definitely.:yep::look: For starters I'm able to moisturize it better. Wearing it straight also means I don't have to handle it really at all except on wash days which means more retention. I cut combing completely out of my regimen and I brush once, maybe twice a day. I'm able to protect it a lot more too. If the weather's harsh, I can wear a hat and that's that.

How much breakage do you get wearing it straight compared to natural?
I've never had a relaxer, wore my hair in braids from age 4 to 16 and as a child my hair touched my butt. When I got to HS it was barely SL.:nono: I'm guessing it was due to the pulling as well as breakage. The thing is I have a lot of hair so loose braids will not work. I still get my hair braided at least once a year so I can swim on vacations but I notice when I take my braids out I have much more breakage when I de-tangle. So in a nutshell, hardly any while straight.

Has your natural curl pattern loosened or changed since you straighten on a regular basis?
Up until 2 weeks ago I would've said yes. After encountering someone who does not use heat and wears her hair naturally, I'm not so sure since her curl pattern is very similar to mine. When my hair gets wet it goes back to its curly state pretty quickly.:ohwell:

Yes I believe I do. I think its because my hair is stretched and not allowed to curl up on itself.

Now that my hair is longer, I experience more breakage if I wear it out naturally. When its straight its better protected.

Its definitely wavier, but when I do a wash and go it still shrinks to my shoulders. The texture itself is curly at the ends with waves throughout. I hate shrinkage :ohwell:

I just started straightening to combat SSK's and tangling. No matter how much I detangled I still got them. Hopefully I can retain some length this way.

I've been enjoying wearing my hair straight! I really hope my retention doesn't suffer. I really don't think it will, but we will see.

My hair has flourished so much from wearing it straight. I actually am able to see it's needs better. I have gained an inch in a month.:yep:
I would get awful knots and snagging when I wore it curly. So now I have to take of the setbacks from the old reggie.

Yes. Air drying doesn't work well. I get really cute buns but my ends dry out pretty bad and that causes breakage.

Even when I was relaxed, I couldn't wear my hair curly. It would snap off daily. I wear a doobie most of the time and have very little breakage.

Has your natural curl pattern loosened or changed since you straighten on a regular basis?

Nope. It hasn't changed. THe only thing, if I blow dry my hair to make it straight after a rollerset, it will frizz up awfully when wet. However, after a flatiron (after rollerset) when my hair gets wet, the curls come back uniformed and frizz free. HTH
