When I hit waist I stop
How do you go about trimming/dusting your hair? Do you straighten it or.....what? Thanks much in advance

depends on my mood sometimes i trim at will sometimes i blowdry sometimes i press
mostly i just undo twist braids whatever just as long as my hair is dry stretch and snip

I like to trim when my hair it is straight. Being that I wear my hair straight sometimes I want to make sure that my hair has a nice shape when straight or curly and this has been the best way for me.

On occasion when my hair is in twists I'll just snip off the ends of each twist.

I flat iron and then trim. Even when I had a relaxer, the stylist would have to straighten (blow dryer/flat iron/curling iron, etc.) before cutting. I'm trying dusting for the first time this weekend.

Yes, I straighten my hair before I trim it. I already have trouble seeing the back of my head, so I want ever cut my hair wet/curly.

I blow dry my hair straight, and trim the ends in four sections. When my hair was shorter, I would trim in layers.

Lately I have just been snipping the ends of my twists. But another method i like on loose hair(wet or stretched dry) is I section my hair in 4 quadrants(Down the middle from front to back and from ear to ear). Working with one section at a time, I make one inch partings horizontally starting from the top of the section and while holding tight away from my head trim off desired amount working my way down in equal size horizontal rows. I hope that made sense /images/graemlins/look.gif

Thanks soooooooooooo much everyone. I was just wondering b/c I'm really scared to go back to my hair dresser because I feel he's just a lil too damn scissor happy, ya know. So thanks again

No heat

I have a stylist friend who can trim without straightening since I am not concerned with unevenness.

Re: No heat

I trim in twists too. Actually I haven't done a trim yet but I plan on trimming with small twists /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I normally do mine when undoing twists.

That reminds me... I should have trimmed at least a month ago! /images/graemlins/nono.gif

It varies for me and it really just depends on my mood. If I just want to dust the ends, I'll straighten it. If I want to trim/cut my ends, I'll leave them in twists.

My stylist picks my hair out into an Afro, then dusts scraggly ends she sees sticking out. She does an amazing job.

I trim once in a blue moon. I check my ends and if I see a knot or split end, I just trim above it. I don't use any type of heat.

I dust strand by strand.

Wow! That's a job! You got a lotta strands to go through. /images/graemlins/cool.gif
I've always blow dried my hair straight and trimmed it the way I did when it was relaxed. Unfortunatly my method results in a layered cut which was great when my hair was straight (made it look fuller) but not what I want now. I recently started dusting my hair wet at the ends of each curl and I'm going to keep doing it that way for the time being. Straightening it is getting to be more of a job than I can handle by myself.

That's probably why SVT has such lovely hair. She puts hard, careful work into it.

I'm beginning to think that the best thing for naturals to do is tag along with their brothers and uncles to the barbershop. They have the tools to separate your hair and give it a quick dusting, without the hair-raising prices of salons.
