Question about Coconut Oil

Okay, this explains it. Mine is the "Refined" kind that is why it has no smell. I will look for the unrefined. I will use what I have up though and hope it works the same. Thanks.

Hello Ladies,
Coconut oil is the best- once you discover te right one! When I first heard about using it I ran out to my local Asain store and bought a jar off the shelf. Can you say Peww:eek: ! It smelled so gross, like someone mentioned earlier, kinda burnt, even rancid. I took it back. I then went to a health food store and purchased a 1 lbs jar for about 8 times what I paid in the 1st grocery store. It smelled nice, faintly of coconuts, the color was not pale yellow as the previous jar was, but pure white. It was just so darned expensive, like over $12.

I now buy from Tropical Traditions online for pure unrefined virgin coconut oil that I use to cook with and as a spread. They also have pages of health info on the product. I also discovered a really good less expensive oil in Walmart in the cooking isle section by LouAna in a 2 lbs plastic jar. I use this one to prepare all cosmetic things with; hair DC, skin cleanser, makeup remover, skin moisturizer, etc. I even buy perfumed oils (knock off designer oils) and mix them with the oil in seperate bottles to create an all over scented moisturizer- at about 1/20th the cost.

Because of all the benefits I learned about using this stuff (even promotes weight loss, helps clear eczema) I now even give my dogs a teaspoon a day for their health and coat. Keep trying until you find which brands work for you. I can honestly say that I will never use petroleum, or other synthetic products on my skin again like lotions, or dreaded vasiline. Remeber skin is the largest organ on your body, so smearing it on is just like eating it. When traveling, I put it in a small container and take a little with me. Put container in a zip lock baggie if you think it'll leak. This has truely been one of the best things I have done for myself and I share it with everyone!

Thanks for all of the suggestions ladies. I tried it out this weekend and loved the results. My hair was really soft when I got done rinsing it out. I even used it in my sons hair since his hair soaks up everything I put in it including shea butter. This morning his hair was still really shiny and soft. This is definitely a keeper in my PJ closet.

Yaw didn't tell me that coconut oil stinks to high heaven! :fart: I do believe I'd rather prefer the smell of MTG to that! :(

You must have a bad batch. Is virgin or refined? My coconut oil ALWAYS smells like fresh coconuts. I almost want to eat it!

Oh no! It's 100% Coconut oil by PARACHUTE. I don't know if it's refined or virgin. I'll have to check when I get home. It smelled like an old cake or pie or something that was spoiled. Gross.

It depends on what kind you get. I think mine was refined, so it had no "coconuty" smell to it. It just smelled like grease or something! I'm going to get the unrefined the next time I go to the store and see how that works for me.

I dont like parachute either. It was the first oil I had tried. It has a burnt smell to it, like they used heat too high heat processing it. Look for an extra virgin coconut oil.

hi Enchantmt,

by chance do you have any brand recs for this? tia

I got the same jar from Kroger and it's refined. The brand is spectrum. I picked it up cause it said organic.i think it was close to $5. It does say use medium heat to cook with . But the thing that got me it says to rinse out of hair. Hmmm. I was wondering why there was no coconut scent.
So refined is not good for the hair?

I got my jar from Tropical Traditions and now I'm sitting with a bunch of oil on my hair. I'll report back with my results!

I'm currently using Damur Vitaka enriched coconut oil with alma and lemon essences and so far good! My hair is very soft and moisturized.

I like NOW brand. I also have Spectrum and use it but it smells like buttered popcorn to me, not quite the smell I'm going for.:)

I have the virgin coconut oil from the Vitamin Shoppe. It wasn't cheap. I use it on my skin, and hair. I can cook with it too, if I wanted to. It has a faint coconut smell. It's solid but melts in my hands.
I've had the other coconut oil that had added fragrance. It was a liquid oil. I used it on my hair, but prefer the solid kind over that one.

I misspoke when I said extra virgin, its basically just virgin or refined. Also Organic (no pesticides). If you are going to also eat it, I recommend the coconut oil supreme. Tropical traditions used to be THE oil. No one had better quality controls or anything. and I remember reading a review where this girl said she switched oils and didnt lose weight until she switched back to it. I tried it and it tasted "processed". It's really strange because if you have never tried another coconut oil it WILL taste good. I cant really describe it but after trying the coconut oil supreme I couldnt get past the tast enough to use it. One you try the coconut oil supreme you wont go back to any of the others, I promise!! Plus the supreme company is in ohio where I am so I get it within 2days of ordering it. Garden of life tastes ok but compared to the supreme it is "heavy". All of them are good on the skin but for some reason the supreme feels better. Maybe its mental but I dont think so. You can order samples from most companies.

If you are just going to use it on your skin and hair any of them will do. Most of them smell really good but I couldnt stand the parachute. I never tasted it. Spectrum sorta had the burnt smell too but it wasnt as bad and it tastes semi-ok. If it doesnt have any smell/taste to it its refined. It can say 100% coconut oil and 100% natural coconut oil and still not be virgin. I prefer one that hasnt been treated with chemicals or very high heat.

Check out the info on the website above, it has good info on how it is processed and the difference.
