Question 4 Braid Pros

How do you keep your braids looking fresh so that it doesn't look like you've been wearing them for a month when it's only been a week? I'm talking about avoiding the hair sticking out and looking frizzy outside the braid, your scalp getting dry and flaking up, and the MOST IMPORTANT thing...getting it to stop itching sooo bad to the point where you want to take the braids out.

Maybe putting a little aloe gel on the frizzy parts and then tying it down with a headtie for a couple mintues will help. You should definitely be wearing one every night too. For your scalp, I find that any kind of braid spray help me get through the itches( for me it's only the first couple days ).

When you wash your braids try to be very gentle also. HTH

Ok let me see if I can help:

I have had my braids in since 4/22/04 and they are not fuzzy at all. I wash rinse twice a week and use shampoo once a week to help remove build up. I put a little shampoo into a pointed tip bottle and apply the shampoo directly to my scalp but I don't scrub. The only product I put directly on my scalp is Surge twice daily.

I use Worlds of Curls activator (sp?) on the legnth of my braids while they are still damp. This is to help the my braids stay moisturized so my hair doesn't dry out. Once I started getting new growth I used Procectiv Root Health, on the new growth only, just a little.

Most importantly, I tie a scarf on my hair when I know I am home for good and when I go to bed.

I agree to the above. I am currently wearing cornrows (without extensions)

-Wash / conditioner your hair very gently (I wash my hair by diluting the shampoo & conditioner with water in a jug & then pouring it over my head).

-Rinsing also alleviates the itching. I normally rinse my hair everyday

-Use braid spray X2 day. I also Surge my scalp & seal it with S-curl X2 day on the scalp only

-ALWAYS wear a satiny scarf at night.

Hey Girl,

I'm just gonna tell you what worked for me. I recently just carried my last set of braids for about 3 months. What really helped me was that I didn't apply any chemicals upon my scalp, nor did I wash my hair.

I know ... it's pretty gross. But it worked.

I realized a while back that my hair became the most itchiest when I applied chemicals to my scalp, and after I washed it.

This might not work for everyone, but it worked for me. I think next time I get my hair braided I'll try the aloe gel as well, that should really keep your hair looking TIGHT.

Thank you all. When I get braids, I usually keep them in for about 3 weeks (if that). I just can't take the itching and I hate seeing the little pieces of hair that broke off at the root. I think I'm going to try the twist and see how I do. How long do the twist last (the kind that are twisted up to the scalp like cornrows)?

Ladies,
I'm planning on getting micros soon, and keeping them for about 4 weeks. And since we're on the subject, what can I do to maintain the hair care regimen I've started. I don't want the progress I've gained to be lost in 4 weeks while I'm trying to acquire some growth. TIA for any advice. Much luv!!
