Pure Coconut Oil Vs. Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

does it make a difference in which i get?
does your hair respond differently with the 2?
i noticed the pure coconut oil is way less expensive that EVCO and we are in a recession:rolleyes:soo.... i would like to know what are your experiences with the 2?

Yes they are different. Pure Cocunut oil- or "Refined" -has no cocunut smell and somewhat different qualities. Extra Virgin Coconut oil is also called "Unrefined" and still has the cocounut smell- among other properties that you apparently lose in the refining process. Most people here prefer EVCO

You definitely want unrefined, virgin, hexane free, cold pressed coconut oil. Otherwise, it's pointless because it loses all the good stuff in the refining process.

My jar is usually 10-12$ from whole foods and it lasts me 2 months and I use it about once a week. And I use A LOT.

The word "extra" in EVCO is a marketing tool. As long as it is virgin coconut oil it is unrefined. The next best thing would be organic virgin coconut oil.

I wouldn't buy "pure coconut oil" under normal circumstances.

I use Parachute 100% Coconut Oil - it is awesome! It smells like coconut, too. I cook with it, use it in my hair, my body - everywhere. I pick it up by the half gallon at Indian Grocers, $14.

so this cheap coconut oil is no good?
this the one i was plan on buying..

It seems like it might be refined and that's why it's so cheap.

I'm jealous! I wish I had an Indian grocery near me.

^I know, right? You can't beat the price. I split it up between kitchen and bath, lol! My whole house smells like a tropical rain forest...

I'm making my own coconut oil. All i find here is refined coconut oil, and i don't really like that.

Definitely get the unrefined Virgin Coconut oil. I tried the regular coconut when I first started out not knowing any better and there is a big difference. My hair responds to EVCO better and I love the smell.

My hair likes the pure coconut oil. I don't like the smell of extra virgin and pure works better on my hair.

What does Coconut Oil (Extra Virgin) do? Jarrow FORMULAS® Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil from the fresh flesh of the coconut palm fruit, (Cocus nucifera) is unrefined and expeller-pressed in a controlled, indoor environment. This specific process does not utilize any solvents and preserves the volatile compounds responsible for imparting the rich, familiar flavor of coconuts. Coconut oil is a source of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), such as lauric acid (C-12) and caprylic acid (C-8).Coconut oil is stable even during long periods of storage. Because its melting point is 75-76° F, coconut oil can be used in both liquid or solid forms for cooking and baking. For maximum freshness, best kept refrigerated after opening.

  • * Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
  • * Great Source of Healthy MCTs
  • * 100% Unrefined and Expeller Pressed
  • * Solvent Free Processing
  • * Great For Cooking & Baking

You're more than welcome :yep:

there's a thread around here somewhere that actually explains the difference. IF i find it i'll post it.

i don't notice a difference in how my hair or skin feel when using either. i do notice the scent. i hate the scent of coconut oil and the EVCO has a tolerable scent. the expeller pressed one has no scent at all.

i think either will be fine but most ppl here swear by EV any oil. the more it is processed, the more goodness is taken out.
