What can people use to wash there hair if their hair has much protein but not enough moisture? Something replenishing with no protein ( or petroleum, uck!) Is it okay for your shampoo to have protein in it if your hair is already enriched with protein and dry?

I'm not sure if I completely understand what you're implying. Is your hair strong but dry? Most shampoos do not have protein unless stated on the bottle i.e. protein shampoo or balsam shampoo or strenghtening shampoo etc. If your looking for a shampoo to moisturize your hair then you should get a moisturizing shampoo. If you feel your hair is porous then a neutralizing shampoo should adjust the pH of your hair to normal levels.

Some good shampoos on the market

Jason's Natural Sea Kelp shampoo---Fabulous!! You can get it at Wholefoods
Eluecence moisturizing shampoo

You can also try a solution of 1oz of apple cider vinegar and 8oz of water mixed together and use this prior to or after your final rinse. This solution will correct your pH levels if your hair is too dry.

Oh, so thats what an ACV wash does...
Yea, pretty much what you are saying, moisturizing shampoos. Do they also carry a lot of protein. Is it okay for your shampoo to have protein in it or will it damage already dry protein-enriched hair.

Again, unless stated most poos do not contain proteins. The ones that do have ingredients listed such as Balsam, Keratin, Wheat Germ Protein (that's all I can think of for now). If your hair is already strong then using a protein shampoo would continue to make it strong but dry (In my experience) different people's hair react differently. Balsam is a major NO-NO for my hair, it will ruin it...end of story...it may be your best bet who knows? You have to try what works for you, but if your hair is very strong and you have no ill effects from using protein shampoos then continue to do so, just watch your moisture levels.

BTW please refer to thread by Sistaslick, hair breakage 101. Even if you're not experiencing breakage this is an excellent thread on proteins, breakage, retaining moisture etc.
