Profective relaxer, i'm so worried for my sis and would realy appreciate your advice

Hey Ladies

My sister has been growing her hair out for 2 years with weaves. She has now decided to stop weaving and wants to relax. Her strands are quite fine so she will go for a mild strength relaxer. She has also had demarcation breakage in the past and also breakaage when she was natural. The stylist who she has made a appointment with says that she uses profectiv relaxer.

Now I know of the no lye home relaxer kit by profectiv but have not been able to find any information on a professional relaxer. So does anybody know if this is a good standard relaxer for a salon to use, bearing in mind that she will need to be relaxed from root to tip relaxer after 2 years of being relaxer free. Or is there one you would recommend I would really appreciate it....i'm so scared of anything going wrong for her.

ps: the stylist i very nice though and I really don't think she would intentionally do any thing bad. i'm more concerned about her maybe having the wrong knowledge and damaging techniques as we have not had anything else done by her but weave.... i will add that she is natural, has long hair and was the only stylist not to try to talk me out of my transition and also encourages me to stay natural and keep growing it.

So sorry for the long post!!!!

Hello, I do not know much about specific relaxers and whether the brand changes the health of the hair but I will co-sign with the stylist that suggests she keeps her hair natural ... before I get booed, let me say that I had a relaxer on my hair for YEARS and have been natural for about 1.5 years ...

For me, this is the healthiest that MY hair has been in my life. I understand that getting used to the care that natural hair requires can seem daunting but I think she would find that she made a wise decision if she continued on the course she is on. :yep:

I wonder what made her transition from relaxed to natural hair anyway? And what is influencing her to go back to relaxed hair?? I am being nosey but I think with more information about that matter that it could assist with her finding the right choice for her.

If she is really wanting a relaxer, I would suggest that she look on Hairlista.com (or is it Hairliciousinc.com???) for information about caring for relaxed hair ... in addition to this site, of course.

I've never come across a Profectiv product that I didn't like, and I've tried a LOT of them.

The at-home relaxer kit was the best I'd ever used a few years back, so I'm sure the lye version is just as good. Don't worry. :)

She'd had bad demarcation breakage at the front of her head from leaving a too large gap between her re-touch so she used weave to grow her hair back out. She prefers to have her relaxed hair so now that it's grown out again, she would like to give it a go again so we're really going to have to try to look after it.

I'm just scared of her having a bad start as that happened to me before after growing my hair for 2 year, went to a salon that underprocessed my whole head and it couldn't be corrected because it was with a no-lye relaxer. Now i'm paranoid lol.

I'm natural and far from an expert at relaxed hair...But I would be as concerned as you. I have never heard of that brand being anywhere but the drug store...and it's only a few bucks there. Just to get my money's worth there's no way I would spend $60+ for someone to put a $4 product in my hair...no way. Even when I was relaxed I was not very fond of this brand because all the products look like lab experiment (50-11 unpronounceable ingredients). I guess if you are relaxing, you really don't care about chemicals anyway, but I think the company could do better.

I did check their website and ElastaQP (never used them either) is the professional brand...

i would use lye instead of no lye. i like Profectiv. but i am a Mizani girl. i used Mizani regular when i decided to go back to relaxers. i used the Butter Blends neutralizing shampoo, and my hair came out very nice and i wasn't underprocessed. i didn't do it on my own either. i had my mother do it for me to make sure i was straight to my liking. i prefer bone straight. lye relaxers will still give you some body(wave), but it doesn't coat the hair like no lye.
