Products making hair stink?

I get smelly hair after M&Sing. To do so, first I make a section, then I mist the section with warm water and massage that in. Next, I put less than a dime sized amount of NTM Silk Touch Leave-In Cream and 1-2 drops of coconut oil in my hand and rub my palms together, massage that in. I apply more product if needed. That's it.

When I do this after a wash my hair smells fine. But maybe 1-2 days later, my hair will have this kind of weird smell when I mist it with water. You can't smell it when my hair's dry, only when the water hits it. (It is not weighed down, greasy, sticky...just a little stinky.) Can any of you ladies tell me, maybe based on what I'm doing, why my hair smells this way after 1-3 days of moisturizing and sealing?

I would love to have nice smelling hair all the time. My nephew sniffs my hair and says it stinks. If I put ACV on it, it stinks. Those nice smelling shampoo and conditioners are not good for your hair. Who has amazing smelling hair? Sorry OP I don't have the answers.

I too also use NTM, my hair loves that stuff. Personally I really don't notice the smell of my hair, it is only if my nephew is up in it will tell me as it is. hahahaha.

I was trying to figure out what M&Sing was. :) What do you wash your hair with? How often do you wash it? I'm a big believer in aromatherapy and I wouldn't use anything that made my hair smell bad. You can find nice smelling products that are good for your hair. Or get your own essential oils and add them to your oils and other products.

My hair never smells bad but it used to whenever I would seal with coconut oil. I don't know what it was about that oil, but having that on my hair after a day or two was like ewwwwwwww gross!

Now I use Keracare Oil Moisturizier with Jojoba Oil or Moroccanoil Styling Cream moisturizer and sealed with lavender-ladened JBCO or EVOO. I put a few drops of lavender essential oil in both of them and it totally changes the scent. I may sometimes lightly seal with One n Only Argan Oil - this smells awesome to me and makes my hair uber soft:lick:.

I used to use NTM Silk Touch years ago and I always thought it smelled like fish. The essential oils tip could help.

my hair only smells when i baggy overnight with no lil wholes in my bag other than that i thinnk it smells like whatever i put in it. how often are you washing with poo?

I'm with Aggie, my hair never smells bad. Also, Mische brought up a good point about NTM Silk Touch, it always smelled fishy to me (perhaps the SAA?) so I discontinued use. As far as the coconut oil, if you aren't a frequent washer/cowasher, I'd only use it for prepoos because the smell can get rank. Have you tried coconut oil infused with vanilla or sandalwood? It doesn't smell on the hair like traditional.

Hmm, I am wondering if this is the case for me too...I use fractionated coconut oil and the smell is barely existent, but maybe it is not meshing well smell-wise with NTM. Both products smell fine on their own, but I guess maybe when they accumulate they start to stink? I am going to try sealing with JBCO for a week and see if that changes my results...

Thanks for bringing up the possibility of my shampoo being the culprit. Right now I'm using Shea Moisture Retention Shampoo, a sulfate-free brand. This the first time I'm using a shampoo without sulfates and I can't tell if its really cleansing my scalp and hair or not. I'd like to think it is, but it's also true that my hair smells strongly of the shampoo when it's drying...maybe that scent could be mixing in with my M&Sing and just messing my whole hair game up. I think I'm going to clarify soon.

OK, so it looks like I'll be M&Sing using NTM and Lavender JBCO (as opposed to coconut oil). I know Lavender JBCO can be smelly but it usually evaporates. If I'm still experiencing that same bad smell, I will clarify to completely strip my hair of any residue, then go back to M&Sing with NTM & fractionated coconut oil. This will indicate that my regular shampoo might not have been cleansing as thoroughly as needed. According to all the suggestions, it's either the coconut oil or the shampoo that's causing the problem (it can't be my NTM leave-in because that stuff makes my hair smell heavenly on it's own!)
