I had kinky twists in for the past 3 weeks. I hate the buildup thats at the base of the extension when you remove it. I wash them weekly but its still there. Anyway to prevent it?

Good question Keedah,

I have the same experience. Its like lint and stuff and dirt all caked up in a big clump ugh!The last time I had kinky twists was horrible my hair actually locked up and it had to be basically yanked out of my head to get it straight. That was earlier this year right before I found this website.I can't wait for the answer to this question since I'm considering getting kinky twists again to wear for the remainder of the year..

Well yall sure are discouraging somebody!

I plan to get a 4 week twist retouch next week. I'm scared to see what my stylist will pull out of my hair.

Usually when I have braids I get massive buildup, but this summer my braids didn't have as much build up when I took them out. I sprayed my braids every few days from root to tips with African Braid Sheen Spray. Not sure if this was the reason... but it was the only thing different I did. Hope that helps!

When I oiled my scalp everyday (and it was OILLLLY everyday, like dripping :-\) removing my braids was so easy. I'm sure that's what did it. I was using MoeGro oil (EVOO, nettle, horsetail infusion).

I've found that diluting my shampoo (equal parts poo and water) and skipping conditioner cuts down on the buildup. I usually spray my roots everyday with a light liquid leave in (HE), but I might switch to wildgrowth oil...

My secret is not one that's easy to swallow for most but I believe not using any leave-in products while in braids is why my hair never sticks together. I just wash/condition twice a week and baggy every night. Perhaps the fact that when I apply conditioner, whether in braids or twists, I never apply to the bottom 1 inch or so of my hair near my scalp makes a difference. Also I take forever rinsing my hair whether it's after a shampoo or a conditioner. And I always finish my wash by dunking my head in a basin of ACV, EOs and water, and massage my scalp till it's squeaking clean. Perhaps if braid spray was applied to the hair avoiding the base, for those who can't do w/o it, it might make a difference?

Usually I would just spray with a leave in conditoner. I bought some Qhemet Amla oil pomade to use on my scalp. I think you may be on to something because the oil may break up the dirt.

1. spraying the braids not the root

2. shampooing frequently and conditioning to keep the hair from getting dry, dry hair is harder to remove from braids

3. Use braid spray spairingly. A lot of braid sprays are sticky for some reason and get into the root of the braid. When in braids I used a moisturizer like NTM silk touch leave-in. It wasn't too sticky and was great for my hair

4. I like the idea of oiling the roots, keeping them oiled and not full of braid spray should help

5. The day you take out your braids COVER them in conditioner. I used the conditioners I tried and didn't like. I would liberally cover my braids in the conditioner and then take the braids out. The conditioner will help and you will see a lot less breakage!

HTH!

Do you think the Amla pomade will be the same as oiling the scalp?

And Ill try the ACV rinse too
