I want to start doing the baggie method this Spring/Summer. I'm not a big protective style fan either.

Can you ladies give me tips on how to prevent breakage? I know every head is different, so I'll take heed to everything that's mentioned.

TIA

*Dont wrap the baggie around your hair too tight.
*Moisturize when needed
*Use ouchless elastics to prevent snagging on your hair.
*Make sure your ponytail isnt too tight.
*Wash/Condition your hair atleast once a week or as you normally would.

HtH~

I've been lucky because I have not experienced any breakage from the baggie method and I do it every night. I moisturize, use evoo or jojoba oil to seal the ends, make a bun and tuck the ends under, put a little oil in the baggie, cover my bun with the baggie and put a scarf over my entire head. When I take it off in the morning my ends are very soft.

When my hair is freshly shampooed I air dry in a ponytail and when 80% dry I do the steps listed above. It works well for me. I remember to change the location of my bun and soak my non metal elastics in olive oil before using them. I think its a combonation of all these things that have kept breakage awy.

Simplycee, so you just do the baggie at night? and do you wear a bun during the day? I want to do the bun challenge but I don't want to wear a phony pony or phony bun. I currently wear my hair in a bun daily.

I currently use stay so fro and oil (WGO or shea butter), twist and wear a silk scarf over night. My ends come out so soft in the am. I will just keep this up and add the baggie.

I would say I'm KINDA doing the baggie method except I'm covering my bun with a stocking cap instead of a plastic bag.

When I tried the baggie method with a plastic bag, I had breakage around the ponytail holder after taking it down. I use an ouchless elastic band as a ponytail holder. I also think breakage comes from the hair exposed being dry and the hair in the baggie being wet/damp/moisturized.

Now that I'm doing the bun challenge and know my hair gets dry fairly quickly, I moisturize daily or twice a day. I still use an ouchless elastic band as a ponytail holder but next time, I'm gonna try using the thick band part of a stocking cap to avoid stress/tightness/pulling...hopefully my ponytail won't be too loose before twisting my hair into a bun.
