Pressing with Heat made my Natural Hair Soft & Silky, BUT...

Poohbear

Fearfully Wonderfully Made
....it reverted with a quickness when I stepped outside! :lachen:

Yesterday before work, I pressed my hair on 400 degrees Fahrenheit with a Hot & Silky electric pressing comb from Sally's beauty supply. (I had washed my hair a couple of days before and dried my hair in twists with got2b Crazy Sleek Hot Smooth Flat Iron & Blow Dry Lotion on my hair. Before pressing my dry hair, BB Growth Oil Hair Strengthner was on my hair). After I finished pressing all my hair, I had soft and silky hair that I could finally wrap my hair around my head like DivaStyle and bmoreflyygirl! :yep: I kept my hair wrapped before going to work. After getting ready and unwrapping my hair, I went outside and got in my car, and when I looked up at the mirror, I no longer had straight hair... it was a big soft fluffy afro!!! When I got to work, my boss said, "Hey Jessica, now I feel like I'm back in the '70s!" but I didn't take offense to it, I just laughed with her because I knew she was just joking. Several people still liked my big poofy hair.

So I give up on having straight natural hair! (by the way, pressing did not damage my hair! :yay:) I'll just continue to wear different natural hair styles throughout my journey. I am inspired by so many ladies with natural hair who can be consistent and stick with one style and one hair routine all the time to grow out their hair. Yesterday, I viewed Poetist's album and thought about keeping my hair in cornrows indefinitely, but you know what? I really can't see myself sticking to just one style forever. I'm just going to start taking better care of my ends and continue to deep condition in order to cut down on stiffness, tangles, and knots so I can retain length and reach my goal of brastrap length hair sometime next year.

Thanks ladies for taking your time to read about my successes and frustrations with my natural hair! :Blush2:

I'm sorry you keep having all of these issues with your hair! It's good you're sharing it with us because someone else may be having the same issues.

Have you tried Ultra Sheen Creme Satin-Press?
-It helps press last longer
-Less heat required
-Combs easy
-Leaves hair soft, shiny and silky

I've used it for flat ironing my hair when I had my Maxi-glide (now broken!!) and my hair wouldn't start to revert until the 2nd or 3rd day.
I attached a picture from April last year after flat-ironing my hair with Satin Creme Press.

Pooh are you willing to try Chi silk infusion? I mean I have no problems with reversion at all even walking long distances and breaking a sweat.

Pooh Bear, you know we cannot press 'n go around these parts

I am relaxed and stay wrapped until I get to work. I better if I want a style when I get there.... Louisville,KY humidity is no joke :nono:

Pooh Bear, your hair is beautiful! :gorgeous:

LOL, I hear you Poo, atleast it ended in a hairstyle that you could still rock. Maybe pressing can be your switch it up style every now and then, and if you try it later in the future try Like Silk by Liz N Daughters, smells good and holds a press good without the stiff hair. Plus Tenny is right, you need to keep the tresses safe until you reach your destination and bump the AC. :lachen:
Pooh, what I realize, cover your hair until you get to work, and CRANK dat AC in the car :lachen:

otherwise poof city

Aww I'm sorry your hair didn't stay straight Pooh Bear! Did you use any products when you pressed it? I find that serums make my hair fuzzy and poofy. Or maybe you'll have to wait til the winter months to wear it straight? What's the weather like where you are?

I've been meaning to tell you that my SO saw your fro a few weeks ago and he said it was "groovy". And that's a compliment coming from him. :yep:

Tenny, right when I got outside, it started to poof. So putting on the AC in my car probably wouldn't have helped.

Thanks Corbin. I've read about people using Ultra Sheen Creme Satin Pres on LHCF and I can't find it anywhere!!!

And I see the picture of your hair. You did a great job! However, I got my hair straighter than yours with this pressing iron. :yep: And my hair still reverted.

I saw this at Kroger and was thinking about getting it after seeing recommendations about it on this site. I have to think about it because it's like $12.99 for a small bottle.

Hey Finesse! Nice to see someone else from Louisville, KY.

Plus, it's been raining like crazy here! And you're right, humidity is no joke here.

I just put my hair into flat twists for the time being.

And thanks for your comment!

Girl, this is why I stopped trying to have straight hair (press/flat ironing) if it is not freezing outside:lachen:. But it is definitely part of the journey coming to these types of conclusions. You have to try different things and see how they work out. I have enjoyed reading your stories and relate to much of it.:yep:

When I pressed my hair, I had got2b Crazy Sleek Hot Smooth Flat Iron & Blow Dry Lotion and BB Growth Oil Hair Strengthner in my hair at the time.

Maybe I'll wait to til the winter to wear my hair straight again.

And the weather is very humid where I live.

I feel your pain Poohbear! Saturday I flat ironed my hair, Sunday reversion was well underway. Monday it was a lost cause, so I twisted my hair up. For a rush job (took little over an hour) it doesn't look too bad. Humidity is a witch here too.

That is one of the reason why I wouldn't go natural, when I was still wanting to wear straight hairstyles. I sweat a lot in my head and my hair will revert back to cotton candy in mintues if straighten being natural. It used to do that when I was a little girl or it would go flat and limp. I used to want to change my hairstyle all the time, but when I started growing it when I was relaxed, I stuck to either getting it wrapped or getting rods. I would try something different once in awhile, but I was scared of all of the those different type of hairstyles the damage it might cause. Have you thought about coloring your hair to spice things up?

Just now seeing your question Shortdub78. Yes, I color my hair now. I have a lot of grey. My grey streak is in the middle of my head and resembles the character in X-men if you can imagine that:lachen: (can't think of her name, but she was the one who can't touch people):).

I used a color by Natural Instincts in Egyptian Plum that gave the grey area a nice reddish highlight. Lately, I've been coloring it black and will be stuck with that unless I go get it professinally lightened. I am even tempted to see how I will look if I let the grey hair "take over"--I probably won't like it though, but it was a thought recently because I don't want to feel like I HAVE to color it all the time.

Have you ever dyed your natural hair or considered it?

your hair is so pretty, i was waiting to hear about the results lol! i coulda sworn that comb woulda worked... oh well. a lot of people have told me that the longer natural hair gets, the longer it stays straight wihtout reverting. i think when you get to bsl or midback o something, itll have to just hang down... either way your hair looks great and im glad it didnt get damaged because that woulda been a shame

I had the same issue when I was natural for a while and continue to have it being texlaxed, though not as extreme. I remember I had flat ironed and curled my hair really nice one day and it was the first time I had straightened it out when I was natural, and a friend had come over for us to go somewhere....she was ooohing and aaaaahing over my hair saying wow thats your hair? well no longer than it took us to get to the car and get to where we were going my hair had totally reverted and when we got out of the car she was cracking up and I caught a glimpse in the mirror and just had to laugh with her.

My texlaxed incident was on my friends birthday when we were all going out and I had used my carusos which looked really nice....of course by the time we got to the place to eat dinner it was frizz city. Thats when I gave up and just kept my wash n go for the whole summer...it looked better to be frizzy on purpose than by accident!

Im hoping Ill have more success with rollersets under the dryer...caruso is just adding steam when I already am surrounded by steam everyday in central FL! talk about humid! I dont need any more humidity added to my hair lol...

Sorry to hear your press didn't work out Pooh. But i'd say don't give and keep doing your research. It took me a while to find what works for me. :yep:

It must be really humid where you are. The only way my hair lasts is for me to blow dry it (w/comb attachment) then press ( I use a ceramic flat iron) with IC fantasia . You may want to try getting a professional to give you a hard press and after that it should be easier to straighten your hair from that pont on.

ITA w/others who keep recommending a good anti-humectant. Aveda's is good, but too much will give you heavy, "greasy" hair. :nono: my stylist used some kind of light spritz/spray last year, i wish i could remember what it was... it was great. didn't weigh my hair down, held up pretty well to humidity (although i doubt it would work in summertime or a rainy day). maybe i'll have to visit her after all and get some of it... cuz my ends are resistant to staying straight and coil up at the first hint of moisture... :wallbash:

i'd loove to see it pooh.

There's a member here called lala and I know she was raving about some product that keeps your hair from reverting. Check out her website!

Copying what I posted in another thread....
I don't wear my hair straight, frankly because I don't know what I'm doing. However, have you checked out the owner of the message board for naturals (I'm not sure if I'd be breaking forum rules if I posted links and gave the name). The owner of that site has a picture in her Fotki where her hair looks blow out straight. She doesn't use heat. She stretched her hair by putting it into big twists and then she brushed with her Denman brush.

I'm trying to make it work for me. However, the Denman brush makes my hair shrink and it actually defines my coils. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I was natural for 2 yrs and I sucessfully wore my hair straight in Nassau, Bahamas crazy heat and humidity.

My hairdresser would wash and blow dry my hair. Then she would rub in a little biosilk (silicon based serum) , spritz with a little paul mitchell soft hold spritz and flat ironed. Thats it.

That worked so well parts of my hair never reverted back at all!!! I blamed it on the Paul Mitchell products, but she felt like my hair was just to delicate for so much manipulation. Delicate?? I had a headfull of brillo!!

Shorlty after I relaxed....but my hair was at its longest and healthiest when I was natural..
