Pre Pooing With Oil

I'm new to pre pooing. When you pre poo with oil, do you use water prior to applying it or do you apply the oil to your hair directly?

How long do you usually pre poo for?

On dry hair. Sometimes overnight.

Sometimes I add it to dry hair, or slightly dampened hair.


Sometimes I add a conditioner or deep conditioner on top.


Sometimes I steam the oil in.

i do it to dry hair and leave on with a plastic cap for at least an hr... most likely though 3-4 hrs out of laziness.

I spritz a mixture of aloe vera juice & water on my hair first, add mentholated oil to my scalp, add selected oil to the length (ex., olive, wheatgerm, sunflower, etc.) with extra on my ends, and put on a plastic cap for an hour.

Usually I add penetrating oil to dry hair. The theory being that there is no water to repel the oil from getting into the strand. Though the effects are mostly seen in the long term. I.e. less wear and tear over time. The immediate effect is avoiding dryness from shampooing.

In the past I have also used oil followed by a cheap conditioner prior to shampooing. This gave good immediate results.

I use it on dry hair, overnight under a plastic cap.

I've tried dampening my hair before leaving it on overnight, and still achieved a less drying shampooing session, but the additional benefits (strength with EVCO and softness with EVOO - amazing shine with both) just weren't as significant as they are when applied directly to my dry hair. The oil even manages to cut through any product I've got built up, but not water for some reason.

I prepoo while detangling on damp hair. I use coconut oil or a premade coconut oil prepoo from APB.

For those of you who prepping overnight. How do you stop the oil from running through your pillow sheets and pillow? I have nice pillows and sheets that I don’t want oily.

I do a nice tight Saran Wrap/Plastic Cap/Satin Scarf combo.

I never have leaks.

That would probably indicate that I used wayyy too much Oil.

thank but i hate wearing plastic caps to bed. i don't like the feeling nor do i like hearing the plastic "noise."

The Saran Wrap kinda' takes away from the Crackling Plastic. (That and the Scarf).

I like using heat alongside my prepoo. I think the heat plus oils “condition” and reactivate the products already in my hair so my hair comes out smooth and easier to detangle.
