I can't pincurl to save my life. I ask and they just say they sleep with a satin bonnet. If I do it...flat when I wake up. My one coworker has 3c hair like mine and her curls are beautiful. I used to think it was because of my hair type.

In the year I have been caring for my hair and had major hair growth, I cannot get the nape of my hair to grow. It has not been sheding nor has it been breaking off. So I do not know what the problem is. Anyone have any suggestions?

Naw...hair type has nothing to do with it. I pincurl my 4a flatironed hair on wash day and sleep in a satin bonnet for the rest of the week. (currently trying to see if I can go 2 weeks before washing)

If I ever find my computer attachment for my digital camera I'll post the pics I've taken of my pincurls. :ohwell:

Why do people keep cutting their hair, and then complain that it is not getting longer as they thought it should be?

They let their beauticians tell them the have thin or damaged ends...
but they don't follow up with taking care of their hair, like deep conditioning treatment.

long-haired rollersetters,

how many rollers do you use?

i'm at BSL and i just did my very first rollerset and only used 18 rollers, which is all i had (in the big ones).

then i looked at Macherieamour's album, and she looks like she has WAY more than that. I also remember that when my mom or aunt used to rollerset my hair, i'd need about 30 rollers or so.

other question: do more rollers = more body?

Can blk women really have healthy relaxed and colored hair?

You can take a look at BlackBarbie's Hair and see that it is possible. Her hair is beautiful!

I knew someone on the hair board (I don't know if she is here) named MsHoney2u and her hair was blonde and healthy.

Then there is always BlackBarbie.

But as always there is always exceptions to the rule and *I* personally consider those women the exceptions. I don't think that most black women can pull it off. Just as most black women can't pull off using heat on a regular basis and yet there are some who's hair thrives.

So to answer your question straight no chaser, I say most women can't. I have never seen someone past MBL who is colored AND relaxed. I am not about to take the chance and try and find out if I am an "exception."

Why does that one spot feel tender after you take down your wrap? (hope i'm not alone in this ;D)

I experience this too. :(

I think it's due to combing the hair against the grain of how it grows out of the head  I stopped wrapping on a regular basis so I don't have to deal w/it.

My questions:

1) On the RARE occassion that I do wrap at night, in the morning I have that one side that sticks out all random-like. Is that because I don't have long hair yet?? I don't see that in my long haired friends (one of whom has fine hair like me) I don't use a lot of product so I know it's not that.

2) I'm pretty sure I've got the protein/moisture balance straight for my hair overall, but how can I stop those tiny little 1/4" hairs I get when I'm styling? I mean they are literally like this long __

They are occassional (really only on wash day), but they annoy me

when last have you trimmed? I noticed that I get those too if I haven't trimmed or done any dusting. Also since the ends dry faster than the rest of the hair I would suggest you moisture those ends on a regular basis.

I still get the tiny hairs but not as much. It used to be HORIBLE. But it's breakage. Usually from overprocessing and/or too much heat. You can try texlaxing and/or laying off the heat if you use it.

I was just going to ask this, because this is what sent me to the hair boards. But I think I figured out my own answer. I had gotten my hair colored and it was doing fine. My hairdresser told me to use a protein spray by Rusk ( I can't think of the name of it) NO MORE THAN 1 TIME PER WEEK. So of course, i used it like every other day, and my hair broke off:eek: . I think if you can find the proper balance, which I now have the grasp of, It may be possible. Well, I am hoping so, because I really really don't like these grays staring at me:look:

I don't "trim" per se, but I dusted last week. I do a little bit (like diff. sections of hair each time) of dusting often. I've only seen 2 or 3 split ends in the last 3+ months

I rollerset weekly and only flat iron the roots on low heat at that time. Deep condition regularly 1-2x/week, use protein as needed (pretty regularly cuz my hair is fine). And I moisturize daily or every other day.

Oh well, it could be worse. It could be all over mid-shaft breakage or something horrible like that  (my nightmare!)...

Like I said before it's only here and there on the ends (maybe 4 or 5 tiny 1/4" hairs at a time) so I guess I just won't worry a/b it :ohwell:...

Thanks ladies!

To avoid massive tangles and knots, what is the most effective way to self wash and condition hair as it grows longer  I have tried the crown and glory braided method for washing and that does not work for me... the braids come out and I still get tangles that I have to work through.

I used to have the same problem. Now, when I wash, I part my hair down the middle and detangle each side VERY well and get rid of all of the shed hairs. After I've detangle each side, I braid it up and put a barrette on the end. When I get into the shower, I take one side down (which is very well detangled) rinse it very well, and then shampoo. When I shampoo, I allow my hair to hang down, and do not manipulate the ends of my hair much, I am mainly shampooing my scalp, then I sort of squeeze the shampoo down the ends of my hair. After I rinse that side well, I braid it back up and put the barrette back on the end. I then do the same thing to the other side.
When I get out of the shower, I unbraid one side, apply my conditioner (lots) and gently run the comb through (I am in LOVE with the K-Cutter comb), sometimes I skip the combing and just braid it up and do the same to the other side. After I sit under the dryer for 30-45 minutes, I get back in the shower and rinse one side at a time while combing under the water. And, braid each side back up, then get out and style.
When I do this my hair is a breeze to detangle. Sorry this was so long, but I wanted to explain each step.
BTW, when I say braid, I actually mean twist (the two stands work better for me) :) . HTH

How long does it take to get the hang of doing air dried hair? I've been trying...

The only way airdrying works for me is when I'm going to wear buns, ponytails, or a twist-out with a cap or bandana on. The key I've found is to twist my hair in two large twist with a part down the middle of my head, or roll my hair (either in one or two ponytails, or doing a rollerset). Other than the rollerset of couse, I always put a scarf on to help my edges lay down once my hair is dry.
When I style, I either wear a bun, a ponytail, which will be curly from the twists, or I may wear a twist-out and wear a cap or bandana.
This is just what I've come up with that seems to be working ok for me, but I would still love to be able to really wear a wash-n-go, or a really cute twist out.

How can I learn to read the ingredients listed on products. I never know what a protein is. I want to be able to go into the store, read the ingredients, and know if it has protein in it or not...sometimes I am looking for something with no or little protein, and the only way I'll know is to look for old threads and see if anyone has talked about it. I hope this question isn't stupid :) .

For me, just reading on here and common sense too. I learned to read ingredient lists from searching and reading. Anything that ends with the word 'protein' you know it is a protein. But anything that is :Keratin, silk amino acids, collagen, among with others are protein. And sometimes those may have "hydrolyzed" before the word.

Also, do know that the further down the list a ingredient the less it is in the actual product. So don't be scared of you see some protein all the way down the list. Chances are your hair may not even feel it.:look:

Anyways, search "different types of protein" and you should come up with lots of threads.

Does anyone use a PROTEIN SHAMPOO?

Is there a difference/benifit to using a PROTEIN SHAMPOO vs. just using a PROTEIN CONDITIONER?

Scientifically, the names of proteins always end in -IN or -EN (keratin, collagen, insulin, hemaglobin, etc.). So, I can always identify a protein in an ingredient list even if I've never heard of it, just by looking at the ending. Hope this helps! :)

Thanks, this will help me a lot.

I'm thinking of texlaxing on my next relaxer in an attempt to thicken up my hair. Has anyone had any negative results from texlaxing? I’ve always heard that underprocessing the hair could cause damage, and isn't texlaxing essentially underprocessing?

I would say use red rollers b/c they're smaller. The smaller the roller the tighter the curl. The purple rollers(big rollers) give you body and little curl.

Thanks. This worked well!! (at least I liked it :D )

I'd never heard of texlaxing before the boards, but many laides here do it with success. Their only negative results that I've read about often are problems detangling...

what are the reasons for braiding your hair before you wash?

It helps hair from becoming tangled during washing and ease the combout afterwards. This especially is helpful while dealing two textures- lot of new growth.
