Please persuade me to wear protective styles to retain and grow more hair!

I wore protective styles on and off (mostly) for three months and my hair grew so long and pretty. Leaving my hair alone was the best thing I could have done to it. Now I want to wear my hair down all the time. I play in it all day too, oohing and aahhing over the thickness and shine. I have tried to stop myself from wearing my hair down by putting nasty smelling aloe vera (Str8 from the plant) in my hair, but it doesn't work!

Please persuade me to stop. I am asking for your support or just beat me senseless (Do this:

)Maybe I should tie my hands behind my back.

Anky, you're not alone I have a hard time giving in to wearing protective styles also. In fact, I feel proud of myself on the days I actually wear them.

GYRUL stop dont touch another strand!

BACK AWAY FROM THE COMB, LAY IT ON THE TABLE!

before you know it if you keep playing around all that growth will be on the table too!

nah I think you should have fun with your hair I mean if you cant floss it, what is the purpose. soon you will get tired of it down and go back to the protective styles

I know how you feel anky. Wearing protective styles is difficult for me too. So difficult, in fact that I only do it 4-5 times a week. I always permit myself the weekend to wear it down. Maybe just start wearing it up a few days of the week and increase from there. It's worth it in the long run

STOP playin in your hair

Let that hair grow out lol. But for real, maybe you need to play in your hair. I remember last year I had to get a trim in November due to my playin. I had just started to get to ear length and I was actin a fool. And before I knew it, my ends were raggedy, and I had to get a 1/2 inch cut.

I wasn't happy, but that woke me up and I started getting serious about not playin in my hair and started finding ways to protect my ends (I was natural then, so I just started doing shake and go's). But I hope you don't have to go down that road. I was dissapointed and it set me back a month.

Don't go to the darkside

Anky, I feel your pain, that's happened to me too. Have you tried french braiding your hair? Sometimes I do that when I have handsinhairosis. I even make a style out of it by doing it a little loose with bangs, etc. Or you can do the bun in the day, the french braid at night and then wear it wavy the next day.
Take care,
G

I have a hard time with protective styles, too, so I just set small requirements for myself. Right now, I tell myself to only touch my hair twice a day. Once to style it in the morning, and next to prepare it for bed at night. I make sure to style it so that the ends are tucked under.

*French braiding my hair as we speak* I must get to 14 1/8 inches!!!! Thank you so much ladies.

P.S. Before knowing about this board, I found Adrienne's picturetrail album and my mouth dropped

I realized then that i have to take charge of my hair and not rely on my stylist to be my hair savior!

Thank you so much, once again ladies. More slaps and beatings are needed.

BUMP

Since i made this thread, I've been wearing protective styles (i was about 9-10 inches when I made this thread... I am now 13 inches). But after doing the following, I cannot seem to stop playing in my hair again
ohwell.gif

1. Pretreatment with warmed olive oil for 30 min
2. Shampoo with Elasta QP Neutralizing Shampoo
3. Deep Condition with Salerm Wheat Germ Mask
4. Spray all of hair with Motions Leave-in and apply Proclaim Glossing Polish on the ends only. Rollerset with black, purple, & grey rollers (for layered effect). Spray with cheap Proclaim Oil Sheen before sitting under dryer.

more slaps and beatings are needed please.

You saw it the first time around, and now you've retained 3-4 more inches in the meantime! LEAVE IT ALONE!

Anky I have the same problem! What made me stop was all of the shedding that I was having afterwards.

but I understand your pain!! I have now been 'saved' and been wearing my hair in a bun for the last 2 weeks. I always look at everyone's progress pics for motivation.

I have a problem with wearing my hair down all the time too but Ive done it most of my life! Since Im planning on stretching my relaxer, I guess Im gonna start trying the protective styles thingy every time I get extreme new growth. Wish me luck.
