I'm tring to figure out why my hair feels stiff and dry while I'm shampooing. I thoroughly wet my hair while in the shower and then I apply the shampoo. Of course first application doesn't lather so I rinse that off and then apply again. In both cases my hair feels stiff and I don't feel like I can get my fingers to work thru my hair not even to wash my scalp. What's wrong with my hair?

What kind of shampoo ru using? Does it have sulfates in it?
It could be too harsh on your hair...

Yep, sounds like it may be a stripping shampoo and u need something more moisturizing.
Does it feel better after you condish????

This is one reason why I switched to mostly co-washing (after losing a big ball of hair trying to detangle the notted mess that was left after shampooing).

Yea, the shampoo may be too harsh. If you haven't tried this, try Creme of Nature shampoo (I use the red-labeling, professional bottle). It feels like a conditioner sometimes :)

I agree with the other ladies. Its definitely the shampoo that making your hair feel like that. Creme of Nature is really good.

It's the shampoo. That's how my hair felt last night. In a last ditch attempt to try to better my hair I bought and used a chelating shampoo which jacked my hair up even worse. I left conditioner on it while I was taking a bath but no dice, I think you'd need to condition and oil your hair several times over the next week or two for it to get back. As for me, I'm cutting mine off.

That happened to me yesterday because I had my hair in twists and I never moisturized properly, maybe you should pre-poo your hair before shampooing to help protect it from the drying affects of the shampoo.

Thanks ladies. I think it could be a few things. I've been processing this over the 24 hours. I had a filter on my shower that hadn't been changed in months. I think maybe it had gotten filled with all the hard water stuff and it probably was coming out on my hair because it needed to be changed. I won't know for sure until I shampoo again.

I don't realy think its my shampoo because its happened with several shampoos...all totally diff brands. Nexxus, Elasta QP, Optimum, etc. I'm going to try a new Redken shampoo that was referred to me by a stylist. We'll see. I may have to do the prepoo thing but it just could be the hard water mess. : (

I'll keep you posted. Thanks for your responses.

Oh yeah. I did forget to say that my hair feels great after conditioning. It is literally when I put the shampoo on my hair and start trying to wash. I just couldn't get my fingers through my hair during the shampoo process. I would have to keep sticking my hair back under the water to get my fingers through this. It never used to happen before no matter what shampoo I used. I think I may have to invest in one of those expensive water softening systems.:ohwell:

My first instinct was also that your shampoo was too harsh but now that you have mentioned the hard water I feel that you might need a chelating shampoo. I had the same problem with the water in my old house and I used Redken Hair Cleansing Cream (lathered only once) and it worked wonders. My hair was so much softer and tangle free even before I conditioned it. It helps to remove mineral deposits left on the hair from hard water http://www.redken.com/products/haircare/specialty-products/hair-cleansing-cream-shampoo

oooh! thanks! that sounds good. in fact. i just got out of the shower and shampoo'd my hair with redken all soft and used the conditioner as well and my hair feels good. i really believe it was the old filter now.

I suggest doing a prepoo with butters, oils, and/or conditioner. And also switching shampoos. The best shampoos I've used are: Garnier Dry/Damaged, Creme of Nature Green Label, Redken Smooth Down, Nexxus Aloe Rid, and Organic Root Stimulator Creamy Aloe.
Whenever i omit a prepoo my hair is drier after shampooing

Yeah, I usually will prepoo. I going to have to do a mild protein treatment too. I think I'm past due.

well there's part of your problem! shampoo is supposed to be used on your scalp, and not so much your hair. next time you shampoo, try putting a teensie bit on your fingertips, and working it straight on your scalp. when you put shampoo on the length of your hair, you expose it to harsh sulfates (if you're using a sulfated shampoo). even though you might not think so, the hair gets thoroughly cleansed as you rinse out the shampoo from your scalp. you should only need to apply it 1x to your hair, as multiple latherings may dry it out unnecessarily.

also, what exact shampoo are you using? that might also have contributed to the problem.

If nothing else works Cayenne, try using Wen Cleansing Conditioners by Chaz Dean. EXCELLENT!

Yes, I agree it is yoru shampoo. Some shampoo especially clarifying ones leave my hair dry and brittle feelings. Since I switched over to Keracare's Hydrating Poo, my hair has felt stronger and healthier by the month. This poo detangles and isn't too stripping as it gently cleanses. I LOVE that stuff!! I bought a 32 oz. bottle and I KNOW i will use it all up....I can't say that about some of my other products lol
