Hi Ladies,

FYI - I did a google image search out of curiousity under "mbl, hair" to see what would happen.

Surprisingly, pictures of quite a few members were available. I was surprised. I don't know why though. I know that once you put something on the web, it can be found almost anywhere.

Nonetheless, just wanted to make people aware if they didn't know already. I thought that the pictures would just stay on this site and not on a search.

thanks for the heads up JFK. i just did the search and a lot of pic ppl put in their posts are popping up too. (and i know b/c i remember a lot of them as being 'omg what happened to my hair' pictures)

Well I did a search and one of my pictures came up. I was surprised because its a picture I used to have up in my album that I deleted. I thought that if i deleted these pictures they were POOF gone but I guess not. Not sure what to do.

a lot of hair terms will link to pictures on this site...the key to not having your pictures come up in the images to to name your picture something random like 000gzy.jpg so it won't hit in a hair search or name it something so common it will have so many hits that your item will be buried.

:yep: i was going to recommend this. ALWAYS save your pics as a random name

I searched:

twistout
flat twistout
Puff, hair
Wng, hair
wash and go hair
braid out
big chop

And, OMG there are a lot of member pictures out there.

That's not cool especially if the photos that are coming up are of members in their bra.

I think it's fine as long as you hide your face. I did a search on my user name, and besides my avatar (sad Longhorn baby) I got pictures of other people's hair that I guess I commented on.

BostonMaria, did you track the photo to see whether it wasn't hosted elsewhere? I think it would only appear if it is still available at another site.

I'm not a computer whizz by any means, but couldn't admin put some sort of "no follow" tag so that fotos aren't registered by search engines?

I think google (or maybe the internet in general) has a function where anything produced is saved to moniter changes, that's why even if a page is gone you can sometimes pull up what the content looked like at one point under the 'cached' option.

Maybe you could try emailing the site where the picture is located and see if there is an option to have it deleted?

This is so creepy. I see a few of my pics. Many of my pics that are popping up are those that have been posted on this message board and at another hair board. I'm no longer a member at the other hair board and had my profile deleted but I guess those two pics remain over there.

Google will pick up pics from message boards. None of my pics are named 3c hair and have the random numbers from my camera in the original name, but if I type in 3c hair I see some of my pics. I've posted in threads geared toward 3c hair on this message board and it looks like Google picked and labeled my pics off of that.

I also have a fotki and have been featured on www.curlynikki.com and www.longhairdontcare.net . Google picked up some of my pictures from these websites too. When I type in my user name I get pictures from all three of these websites.

Also if you google your user name you can see a lot of your comments from this message board. I just say it's important for all of us to be very careful what we post on the internet. That's the bad thing about the Internet. Anything that you post can be used/found. I figured it was only a matter of time...

I've never named my pics. NEVER. and they still come up.

That's because google takes them from message boards. So if you post your pics in a thread with the name "texlaxed" in it, it will take from there. That's why if you type in 3c hair you will see my hair pics even though I have never ever named any of my pics that. All of my pics have the random numbers/letters from my camera and are located (uploaded) on my fotki.

That's just how Google works, even if you name the picture something crazy, if the page the picture's on ranks for keywords like "twist out" or "mbl hair" that people search for, it'll show up. When a page is cached, it could stay there for a long time even if the site no longer operates. At best, just be careful of what images you upload if showing up in search engines bother you.

This sounds about right.:yep:

Agreed. I think it's important for all of us to realize that anything that we post on the internet isn't private and to be careful. I agree that naming your pics random names can help but not always.

This is why I don't post topless or bra pics or pics with me in short shorts, etc. on the Internet.

very true, I typed in my username and the names of some of the more long-standing members and didn't find much until i typed in Ediese... oh my
