Does anyone know how to place a picture next to your user name?

Yup 
Go to User CP on the menu in the dark blue border at the top of the screen.
Select Edit Avatar.
You can choose the graphic the forum supplies OR you can select the option browse for a picture you have on your computer. Read the instructions and VIOLA, you can place a picture (avatar) by your screen name.
