PICS. How to make hair appear soft.

The first pic below is identic to my own hair..How do I go from:

Basically I'd like my hair to look soft and moisturized.
At this point I only cowash every other day.

What do you think of S-curl activator?

Regular deep conditioning.

Her hair still looks soft in the first picture, I think...the curls are just more uniform in the second one, I think.

But I notice that my hair always looks softest when I wash it well, deep condition it really well, apply a little bit of leave-in product, rollerset and then airdry.
My hair gets really fluffy and soft and shiny and all is right in the world.

Some tips she mentions:
Only finger detangle (combs encourage frizz)
No towel drying (use a t shirt instead, less frizz)
Etc.
