Phyto and my hair...

So would it be accurate to say that most or all of the people who Phyto left hanging, have hair that generally doesn't like no-lye relaxers?

Geez, I was going to try Phyto when I finish stretching but now Candice has me re-thinking it. I mean, I want a touchup that will straigthen all of this new growth when its time. I think I will be seriously depressed if this happens to me.

Anyone on here ever relax 16 weeks or more using Phyto?

I relaxed @ 15 weeks with Phyto Index 1. It didn't get my hair completely straight, but that's what I wanted.

That's what it looks like to me, UmSumayyah. When I was younger I didn't know about lye relaxers so I kept self relaxing with the no-lye box kits. I thought my lack of skill was why my hair wasn't straightening. It would lead to me correcting a lot and eventually overprocessing. The reason I tried Phyto was because of the difference in ingredients and the advice on here about self relaxing.

I'm glad my review helped further convince you to stay with Affirm. How did you make the switch? Did you have to do a correction with lye or did your stylist just start with the new growth?

I sure do plan to moisturize even more at this point. I've got to. Even if I've got to drench my hair in moisturizer and keep a shower cap on my head when I'm at home (the whole head baggie method).

My stylist just did the new growth only. In my case it wasn't that the hair was underprocessed it was just extremely dry. In your case I would do a strong protien treatment(aphogee) then follow it by a deep moisturizing conditioner for about 2 weeks before a corrective relaxer is done.

I just did mine @ 17 weeks. I really am having a difficult time understanding how a chemical doesn't relax the hair at all. To me it sounds more like a defective box of product, improper useage or the hair wasn't clean enough. I would contact Phyto and request a refund, b/c for hair not to process at all is just very, very strange. I just used an Index 1 for about 10-12 mins and worked it lightly and my roots are straight. The plan was only to texturize, so I'm hoping some of the waves start to come back, but now there are none.

As far as it working better for type 3's. I'm a 3c-4a mix, but I would definitely say my hair is more 4a than 3c.

Candice,

I was also wondering what the results would be if a corrective lye relaxer was done on hair that was previously relaxed (underprocessed) w. a no-lye relaxer. :yep:

Do let us know how it turns out. I hope all goes well. :)

Sorry to hear it didn't work for you. Are you going to continue using the relaxer you were using prior to this?

Yes. I'm going back to Affirm. I didn't really have a problem with it before. I was just having problems with my former stylist overlapping in a small section in the back (and becoming scissor happy). Hence I fired her. I thought Phyto would be more self relaxer friendly (for me).

I'm sorry to hear it didn't work for you. I am a 4a/b and was a former relaxer ho, meaning I would jump from relaxer to relaxer without any real adverse effects. I've done no-lye box perms to salon lye perms. The only part of my hair that is underprocessed is my front and that's because I didn't leave it on or smooth as much as the back.

I know that everything is not for everybody and I hope your hair suffers no adverse affects. You should be able to correct the underprocessing with a lye relaxer, though.

Hi CandiceC,

I'm so sorry to hear what happened to you. I was actually considering using Phyto for my next relaxer and was looking for a place to buy it. But now after reading this, I realize that there is no reason for me to switch from Affirm since I'm happy with it. And I swore after reading Cathy Howse's book, that I wasn't relaxer hopping anymore, so I'm going to stick with that. Thank you so much for stopping me.

Here's what I would do if I were you:
-Do not do a corrective relaxer in a week, don't even do a strand test in a week.
-You need to wait a couple of weeks and give the hair a rest. I know this is going to be hard, because you don't like the texture. But after looking at your Album, I would wait because you don't want to lose the hair that you have gained.
-Do a protein treatment like Emergency from Nexxus. It's made for problems like these. Then do a mega moisturizing session, add EVOO to your moisturizing conditioner. Keep the hair as moist as you can.
-You may want to try braiding it (in big braids that aren't stressfull to the hair or the hairline). Or put in some style so that you won't mess with it too much since it will have several different textures to it.
-I would wait about 1 month, mainly because you don't want to cause more problems for your hair.
-I would also find an excellent stylist to do the corrective relaxer. If you lived in NY I could recommend one. I personally would not try to do the corrective relaxer by myself.

I hope that whatever you decide to do that it works out for you. BTW you may want to try Affirm Fiberguard, I personally believe that this is an excellent relaxer it's what I use. I actually have a tub of the mild Affirm Fiberguard that I can't use because I need the regular strength. Let me know if you would like it.

I'll probably interview a stylist sometime next week. I usually use regular strength Affirm on my new growth. Do you think using mild would be better to use as a corrective? Would it make a difference? I was just going to have regular strength put on for a short while.

Hi CandiceC,

I'm not sure if the mild would work better or worse in your case. This is something you should talk to the stylist about before you go. You might be able to contact Avlon the company that make Affirm to find a stylist near you that they recommend that uses Fiberguard. I think they should have this type of information. Get a consultation by that hairdresser and they should be able to tell you what would strength is best for this.

Good luck. I'll have the tub waiting for you if you decide to use it.

I had to find this thread...I can't believe I missed it the first time...wow...
I guess it goes back to the phrase...everybody's head is different.

@whipeffectz1 - I touched up with Phyto at 14 weeks...and it was a WONDERFUL experience....next time I touch up...it will be at 16 weeks - unsure if the two week differential makes much difference.

The Phyto Pusha is gonna be pizzed at me...but I'm two finger snaps away from starting a thread..."Stop Using Phyto...Don't try it...Don't think about it! Run away from this product! Just please stop! The Phyto Users apologize profusely for recommending this product. Continue with whatever relaxer that you are currently using..."

Yes, I said it. Sue me.
