An article I once located suggests the following: (others can chime in for better explanation)...

Ideal pH has closed and smooth cuticles, which gives the hair strength and shine, prevents excessive tangling, and allows the hair to retain moisture. Relaxed hair at the wrong pH is dull and dry, tangles and mats, and breaks easily.

ETA: Not sure if you're relaxed but I thought the explanation of the ph portion was a good explanation based on what I've read/seen on LHCF.
