Permanent Black Hair Dye

I need recommendations for a good black permanent hair dye.

Since the health scare about Bigen hair dye, I've sworned off using it for my mum's hair. But now I need a replacement.

So whats good out there?

I've used Loreal Feria, Dark and Lovely and Textures and Tones. Feria seemed to make my hair feel the best. The other 2 left my hair tangled and rough for a few washes.

I second this. I use it on my mom's hair. It's a very gentle system. I use the light blonde and bright auburn on my own hair with no issues.

A hair dye that can harm a woman's fertility and endanger her unborn child has been banned in Britain.

Yesterday Tesco pulled the product from its UK stores following a Europe-wide alert. Sainsbury's said it was also removing the dye from sale.

But trading standards officials could not confirm how long the dye has been sold in Britain.
The removal order followed the discovery of a banned chemical in three hair-care products: Bigen, Blasol and JR Beauty.

The ban came from the EU's Rapid Alert System, Rapex, which warned: 'The list of ingredients indicates that the hair-dye contains sodium perborate. Sodium perborate is toxic if inhaled… [and] may damage fertility or the unborn child.'

Professor Allan Pacey, former chairman of the British Fertility Society, said last night: 'If women are concerned about using the recalled products they should seek medical advice.'

A spokesman for the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, which is responsible for recalls, said: 'Sodium perborate is a prohibited substance under the cosmetic products safety regulations because it can cause harm to fertility and unborn children.

'As with any recall consumers and retailers should follow the instructions and in this case they should return the product and ask for a refund.'

A Tesco spokesman: 'Customer safety is always our top priority, so we have taken the precautionary measure of issuing a product recall for the Bigen hair dye range.'

'A Sainsbury's spokesman added: 'We are taking the Bigen product off the shelves.'

I use Henna mixed with indigo.

Does that give you black to jet black results? Also I can see that being a lengthy and messy process having to guess with the henna and indigo to get the correct color and being a messy application.

I use Ion PPD free permanent color creme with the 10 developer. 10 is suggested for demipermanent color, but it works just fine for me. I haven't seen any damage, curl pattern is intact, and it covers my gray strands.

I just used the Creme of Nature Moisture Rich Hair color in Jet Black and got great results. Great coverage, cheap, ammonia free and not drying. I used the Shea Moisture a few months ago and it dried my hair out like crazy, which was weird because I've used it before and it was never that drying.
