I don't think race really has anything to do with it, accept maybe in the texture/thickness/etc that you may have.

But, I do think genetics play a part on so many things about us. There are so many things about me that are so much like my mother! And so many things about my son that are just like my brother.

I think you can have fine hair genetically. I think you can have a particular texture genetically. I think you can have thick hair genetically. It makes up everything about us so some part of how our hair is very genetic and I will never believe that it is not. If so, that discredits a lot of biological facts.

But, I think too many people write off every hair issue to genetics and that is just not always the case. You can have thin hair just from not taking proper care of it, too. Or maybe if you were born with fine hair anyway, you can make it worse with over processing, etc.

I agree 100%. I also think that we can change some things we inherit. Like it your whole family has dmamged brittle hair, it is something you can change but it starts from the inside out. This is just my opinion I am no scientists so don't jump me if I am wrong.LOL!

Well My Great Grandmother was Biracial
Black and indian She had Very Long Thick hair
in the 70's when my dad had a Fro it was Huge and Thick!
My Great Grandmother on my mothers side of the family had indian in her but i never knew about her hair...

Interesting way of asking if only mixed chicks can grow their hair long :look:

Yeah it is but i really dont look mix nor my father...he is dark im just regular not dark not light just regular my sister was dark but as she got older (20's) she became Light??? But my dad tells me i look indian when my hair is wet ( i dont see how i have 4a hair):perplexed

I don't have BSL (I'm on my way there though) but I've been there before, before I cut my hair.

My parents and grandparents are black African from Nigeria...

I'm almost BSL and I had mixed grandparents especially on my father's side. Looks like you proved your point that race doesn't have anything to do with it or else your passing grandmother would have had long hair and your non mixed grandma's hair would have been short.

Nobecause I am mixed and my hair is not long neither was my Grandmothers and she "looked " white. My Ebony Grandmother had long hair..so...I was just looking for yes or no answers .like I said shoul have done a survey instead or not included the word mixed.

But that's why I'm confused. The OP said her grandmother who was "passing white" was the one with the short hair that never grew long. OP, I'm not sure what you're getting at.

what I should have done was a survey instead .
Mixed race topics are a sensitive issue with some people .
Sorry if I upset anyone with my question and statements.

Nobecause I am mixed and my hair is not long neither was my Grandmothers and she "looked " white. My Ebony Grandmother had long hair..so...

indirectly it is. i mean............we all know white people can grow their hair long (indians too :look:). no one questions that in life. or should we ..........

i mean "looking white" means nothing to black folks..........plenty of "bright light damn near white" black folks got 4zzzzzzzzzzzz hair that takes work to maintain, condition, and care for to deal with the dryness and tangles to grow to BSL.

so asking (mostly black) women who are BSL if they have a parent or grandparent of another race is indirectly asking if they have a non-black (whether they look it or not) ancestor so as to "explain" it away...

that's how i read it.......... but ........... carry on...........:drunk:

So it should be obvious that having a parent or grandparent of another race doesn't always equate with long, BSL hair - hence you and your grandmother's experience.

My parents and grandparents are black.

Hey my Nigerian sister. My dad is from there. But my mother is from here. She has WL hair, but the only one in my immediate family who has that. Non of my aunts grandmothers had long hair. My mother's paternal grandmother was dark, and had WL hair. As you see, I haven't got it, at least not yet!:lachen: I don't know if is contributed to genetics.:ohwell:

my maternal grandfather was half white, and my hair does not reflect that at all. my father has 4b hair, and my mom has 3c hair. I have 4a/b and i have the longest hair in my family..though most of my siblings have 3c/4a hair. i have the coarsest and its the longest.

lol! you better claim that indian heritage.

on a less sarcastic note...i'm mixed and i have never gotten past collar-bone length as far as i know. my great-grandmother (maternal grandmother's mom) also had realllllly long hair and she wasn't mixed.

I don't have BSL hair now but I did before and all of my grandparents are pure Negro.

Well technically we are ALL mixed so I am not quite sure how to answer the OP's question. I am not BSL yet but I am sure there may be some strait outta Africa, with no white DNA in them with long BSL and beyond hair.

I'm biracial white/black and i'm almost bsl... i have been bsl before as a natural... i'm very conscious of mixed race individuals (as far as culture and identity is concerned) and i can tell u first hand that we come in a thousand colors and combinations as does our hair... and it's a little offensive to me when ppl assume that all mixed-race folks have a certain look/hair type etc. i don't have green eyes, a thin nose, or wavy hair to my *ss... hope i'm not a disappointment!:lachen:
