Paging Sectional Washers

Here's what I do...I part my hair down the middle and wash my hair in those two sections. Then, when I'm all done, I do my leave-in and HHB in those two big sections. The hard part comes when I want to put those sections back together to make my wet bun or ponytail to dry. My length is giving me problems! It tangles so badly even after all of the detangling I've done. Today, as I was combing the back section, my arm got tired and my wrist twisted causing the comb to become stuck in my hair!! I managed to loosen it but whoa - what a scare!

I'm wondering what other sectional washers do after applying leave-in. Do you leave your hair in the sections to dry or do you have a good way of putting them back together?

I tried going back to my old method of washing straight back but it's impossible b/c of my hair length and the two textures.

Does anyone just airdry in the two braids and leave the house that way? I was thinking of trying that but sometimes I like to leave my house while my hair is drying...

Sorry for such a long post...

I section into 4 parts...from the time I put in the preshampoo treatment till it's dry and I'm ready to flatiron I never put all the sections together...it would be impossible.

Usually, I'll put my hair in two low ponytails to dry, and then put them together in the morning whethere they are dry or now. I'll add my leave ins and everything in those same sections.

Yes, I do this every morning. I wash in two sections as you do but when I comb I separate each section in 3's horizontally and then comb each section. I then braid each section (left and right), put my scarf on and then go to work. Once I get to work I take my scarf off. I do this every morning. My hair is no where near a long as yours though (it's a the top of my bra strap) but this is the only way I can do my hair without all the lumps and bumps I get when putting it in a regular bun. My last touchup was 8/7 and this is what works best for me since I wash my hair everyday.

I know exactly what ur talking about

... it's quite difficult to put the 2 sections back together without causing any damage or tangles.

I tried the center part sectioning, but that was wayyy tooo much work. So now I do the "upside down Y" sectioning (a center part til I get to the crown, then branch the part off)... I'm left with 3 sections.

I like pooing this way much better cuz I don't have to worry about manipulating my crown & back, which is my thickest/most dense/curliest area.... manipulating to section it + manipulating to merge the sections back = risking breakage & tangles

So far this is working for me.... I may have to change once again once the natural hair gets longer.

Yep, I used to do this quite frequently, the pocohantas (sp?) style

.... only now I do it with 3 plaits

Hmm, I'm starting to think I'm going to have to do more sections depending on what day it is...

I'm thinking on Sundays when I have a BIG hair day, I can do 3 sections as Peachtree described b/c that seems easier to put back together.

Then, on other evenings when I'm not planning to leave the house, I can just airdry in the two pigtails.

Thanks for the info everyone...more replies are welcome!

Hairlove thank you for posting this question. I have been having the same problem as you since I've been washing my hair in two sections. My solution has been to air dry in two braids and then and only then can I comb my hair back to make a bun. I've got thick 3c type hair and I'm going on week 9 since my last relaxer.

I've gone out 1x with my hair in two pigtail type braid thingies but I don't do it very often. I'm a stay at home mom so I have the good fortune of being able to allow my hair to completely dry in the two braids before I even leave the house.

Good luck,

When you guys airdry in the pigtails, do you find that you don't get a smooth bun? (if that's what you do afterwards...meaning the top back portion leading to the bun).

When I straightened my hair a few weeks ago, I did airdry in two pigtails and that was cool b/c it was so easy. But, I didn't have to worry about unsmoothness b/c I was straightening it anyway...

When I air dry in plaits, I'll leave my hair in the same plaits until my next poo or rinse.

But I know what u mean...girl, my buns are never smooth...the sides I can get pretty smooth, but the "top back portion" that ur speaking of

! That crown area is much too thick (I'm thinking coarse even) to go along with the program. *IF* I'm able to get the comb through it

, it'll smooth a bit, then as soon as I let go, it's right back to those resistant coils & waves...

I'm learning to live with it...

This is all very interesting because I had recently been contemplating washing my hair in sections too. I havent done it before but Im glad this subject has come up because I see there can be difficulty in doing this.

I've always shampooed my hair with my hair parted on the side or in the middle. I tried shampooing my hair in sections (two) a few times, but I didn't (haven't) mastered that just yet. When I shampoo my hair with my hair parted on the side or in the middle, I make sure it's a very long part (you know, going through the crown area and all). After I shampoo my hair (hanging straight down, in the shower), I rinse it well and then apply conditioner to both sides (bring both sides in front of my shoulders). While I'm rinsing the conditioner out and detangling (under the stream of the shower water), I then put all of my hair behind my shoulders (still parted) and apply some leave-in, moisturizer and serum and then I place it in a bun. This is what seems to work easiest for me. HTH.

Ooh, I definitely have an update!!

This old problem is not a problem anymore! The solution was longer natural hair and the right detangling products! St. Ives Extra Shine, Suave Awapuhi, and diluted Biolage Leave-In. No issues. I still airdry in two pigtails but I have no problem putting them back together for a smooth bun/ponytail. I can even put them back together as soon as I detangle. My hair wash routine has gotten SO much easier since I originally posted this!
