Overlapping

My mom always put my relaxer in my hair. She always put the relaxer in my entire hair regardless if it been relaxed before

. Now my hair is weak and I don't know what to do. I thought about cutting all my hair off but I don't look good with short hair styles. I use cholesterol treatment everytime I wash my hair. I use MOTIONS products.(I am seriously looking at the Surge hair product but I have not used any as of yet). I read somewhere that using a SODIUM HYDROXIDE RELAXER is better than using a CALCIUM HYDROXIDE RELAXER. Can anyone tell what is the differece?
Is there anything I can do with the overprocessed hair until my hair gets long enough to cut it? AND IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO SO THAT MY HAIR WILL NEVER GET OVERLAPPED AGAIN?????

Well. The first thing is to get your mom on your team. Have her read some of the "relaxer" threads on this board about overlapping. That would be the most important thing you can do for your hair. Next, if your hair is breaking off (and you didn't say it was) and you cannot stand short hair styles on yourself (and I have a big head so I'm not well with it either...) Look into: individual braids (not too tiny or that'll finish the job of breaking off your hair) or a full weave (that costs alot, so maybe your mom could help--that main thing is to cornrow well) If you can get a style like that and gradually cut off your damaged hair it might be less harsh for you.

Actually, I'm going through the same thing. Poor moms

they don't know any better. Anyway, my relaxed hair has been overlapped so many times it's beyond fixing so I'm just starting from scratch and cutting it all off down to my new growth. I'm going to grow my hair out "on the low" with braids or kinky twist -- and when I reach a decent length I'll get it relaxed. I agree with henrilou, though. First get your mom to understand the importance of proper hair care. Let her browse through the forum as henrilou suggested. If your hair has been re-relaxed a lot of times, it's your choice rather or not you want to cut it or not. It's probably severely damaged and it would do you good to start over -- even if you cut a little at a time. Give it some thought

Feel free to pm me if you need anything else, I'll be glad to help if I can!

DO NOT CUT IT!! My hair had the same damage as yours when I first found the forum. It was relaxed virgin style every four weeks for 12 years RELIGIOUSLY. Last year I finally had an eye-opener (lhcf) and began to nurse my brittle hair back to good health. First, I eliminated the heat. Then, for almost 3 weeks straight, I deep conditioned my hair with cholesterol almost everyday which gave my hair elasticity, moisture, and strength. I also did a strong protein treatment. Now I only get my new growth professionally relaxed. Since then, my hair has thanked me by looking 200% better and retaining its length. All your hair needs is alot of TLC and it will thank you for it with time.

Well maybe I'll reconsider Eclipse! But I don't think nobody's hair is as damaged as mines? I'll defintely reconsider, though.

My mom has always done this with my hair but for some reason, my hair hasnt really suffered. After learning more about chemical relaxers, Ive always advised others to apply to the new growth only and I have suggested it to my mom but she still puts the relaxer all over my hair.

Goodness Eclipse! A relaxer throughout your hair every 4 weeks for 12 years?!

I just looked at your album and you've made excellent progress - your hair and length looks great!

You are giving a lot of ladies hope!

I agree about having your mother learn how to relax hair properly from this board before touching your hair again. She may learn a lot of good tips for herself too!
If she isn't interested in doing that, you'll need to let her know you're getting your hair retouched elsewhere, like in a salon. It's your hair. Beauty schools will do it very inexpensively and they should do a great job.

Thanks for all the encouraging words. I did show my mom this site and information on overlapping and she still believe she did the relaxer right. Out to the hair salon with me, I guess

Thanks Isis. My goal is to give as many people as possible hope. Last year my hair was shedding a breaking so bad, I had resorted to wearing wigs. Not that wigs are bad because I still wear them sometimes but it was mandatory for me to wear them if I wanted to look decent. When I found this board, I found hope. Without this board, it's hard to imagine what my head what look like.
