Our caucasion counterparts DO have the same hair woes....

Even though we have established that white women have as many hair woes as we do, it was kind of refreshing to actually experience it for myself today.

I was on the elevator today at work and a white lady got on with me. She looked at my hair and gave me a very nice compliment but I was a little surprised at the dialogue that followed.......

Her: Oh your hair is really pretty
Me: Thanks
Her: Oh I can't wait until my hair gets that length; I am having the hardest time trying to grow it out!

I immediately went into LHCF mode (her hair was in just below chin length layers that were growing out and even though it was still pretty, you can tell she had curled the heck out of every layer!).........

Me: What seems to be the problem?
Her: I can't let go of the curling iron....

Before I realized it, we were standing there having the conversation about heat, conditioner, moisturizer, etc.....Thank goodness we were talking together and I wasn't doing all the talking, but I had started preaching before I realized it.......she was receptive to the info. though.....

I like hearing stories like this, because some people feel like only blacks have problems with their hair. I'm glad you gave her so much advice. She better listen to you, your hair looks amazing!

I love the style in your profile. When I saw your pic I immediately clicked on the link and saw the pin curl pic though it looks like soft waves to me like the ones they rocked in the 40's (I think). Either way it looks great!

Oh, yeah. There like over 70% and we are like 12.8. Black women like 5% of that percentage.

oh you're not the only one that does that. i was on an almost all white book discussion board when one of the girls there started complaining about how damaged her hair was and how she didn't know what to do. before i knew it i was in a "hair advice" trance and told her all about conditioners, moisture, etc...

I did "catch myself" after realizing that I was preaching and wondering if she would mind, but she was pretty cool about it and I was just surprised that she was receptive. (she sounded as if she already knew exactly what she needed to do but just wasn't doing it)

^ I KNOW!! my hispanic and white friends always take my hair advice seriously and have always being supportive of my hair journey. one of them (a hispanic guy) even started using conditioners because i told him how good they were. hey, he asked!

I have mostly Hispanic friends, and ALL of them have taken my hair advice! One of them is a 3C with coarse hair, and I told her about Curly Girl and cones, and her hair looks so amazing now! My black friends don't take any of my hair advice, they continue to get touch-ups every month, and they curl their hair everyday without washing it.erplexed

Same here! A white lady on my baby board was complaining about breakage in her crown area, so we ended up talking. Turns out, she highlights her hair blonde, and flat irons it every morning.

I told her to stop with the flat iron, or at least get a heat protectant (which she knew nothing of), and I told her to deep condition with a conditioner with protein and moisture. I mentioned my "hair board", and she said, "OK, no wonder! Whenever you post a pic, I always stare at your hair. Now I know why it looks so nice!"

You would be surprised at how many of them don't know about deep conditioning and limiting heat.

I always felt self concious about sharing info until my hair started looking good and people starting complimenting me...I felt like no one would believe me until they could look at my hair and be like, "okay, she might now what she's talking about..." But if I had yur hair I would be dispensing it to all that would listen.

I didn't wait until I reached a certain length, I waited until my hair was healthy. I can't believe my relaxed hair is healthy!

Oh yeah, and the poor care with it. Most white women I see have SL or shorter, and quite a few have some chewed-up ends from the bleaching and/or daily blow-frying.

Whereas we have enormous pressure on us to alter our hair texture, they may be under enormous pressure as well to change their hair color, texture, etc. I think one of the most ridiculous commercials I see pretty often is the one where the woman with stick straight blonde hair flips her hair to get volume, and the woman with thick curly brunette hair puts saliva in her hair, while some one is making sarcastic comments in the background. I think it is for Garnier or something.

I can attest to the truth of the OP's statement. A large number of my clients are caucasian and I hear their gripes all the time. What I can't stand is when they have the audacity to use the term "nappy" to describe their hair. erplexed
