alright yall, I'll be doing an okra challenge until june 22. I will eat one serving of okra per day, let me know if you want to join me.

Oh how I love to join but I just can't stand the slimly taste of okra.

Is there a better way?

If you don't like the slime, just eat it raw. That's how I eat it, raw in my salads or steamed for only 3 minutes. The steaming keeps the pretty green color and it isn't as slimy.:)

Another way is pickled, which I also love but haven't tried doing myself yet. I'll be growing some in my garden so I have the opportunity to pickle some. :yep:

When I saw this thread, I thought what new has the LHCF ladies come up with for HHG (I envisioned the craziest scene where okra would be some type of hair conditioner--and let's leave it at that...glad to know that is NOT the case). I love okra like crazy, but I'd have to say I will pass on this one...

hmm, pickled okra? I got to try that, I eat it with salmon, it's a good combo and the salmon mask the slime for me.

Would adding it to my condish work?

sure that will work, keep us posted on your progress

Um, not that I would do it, but how do you add it to your condish?

I'm thinking, boil, cool, drain, and add to the bottle?

Here's what I did:
  1. Cut up the okra (about 1/2 pound), added spring water and boiled for about 20 - 30 minutes.
  2. Let it sit for about a day and a half.
  3. Next I removed the oka and place liquid (if you could call it that) in a cup and stored in the fridge.
I plan on added it to something but not sure which is best, poo or codish.

On a slightly, off topic note... on The View today, they cooked whole okra, mashed it up and applied it to the face like a mask. It's a beauty treatment done in Zimbawe to keep the skin moisturized, smooth and wrinkle-free. Another great use for okra besides our hair and health.

Oh, Thank you for this general information. Not saying that I would actually do something like this, but I like information for information's sake. You know a lady likes to have certain knowledge. Just in case this topic comes up in a conversation.

PS, let a sister know how it works for you.

Oh, and will frozen okra work? I have a couple of bags in the freezer for soups and all.

I like okra, but I never buy it bc my husband and son don't eat it. What are the benefits? I may just have to pick some up today;)

I wish I could get in on this but I'm in the middle of moving and I have no kitchen, no utensils, and no food to speak of...:ohwell: By June 1st, I should be situated. If you guys are having progress, maybe I'll jump on the bandwagon then.

I don't really eat okra (especially not boiled) but if I can put it in the juicer with my carrots and apples and stuff, maybe that would be a way for me to get it in.

My mother cooks fried okra that is really good.

i LOOOOOVE fried okra, and okra in general, and im about to go prepare some now.

I am so in on this challenge. Dont know if i will be able to eat okra every single day (in terms of availability), but i think i will challenge myself to 4x per week.

I may also add some boiled okra to my homemade, co-washing conditioner.

Before I purchase a barrel of okra, can someone give me the run down on the benefits?

TIA

Isis - wonders cease to amaze!

Before preparing the mixture stated earlier I also took a few okras' and blended them with spring water. Since I already have some prepared I will try this tonight, it time allows!

I find this thread very intriguing, my family is from Africa and grew up eating okra almost every day for many years as most people did. I can assure you it did nothing whatsoever for my hair or others around me at the time who continued to battle with slow growth and an extremely nappy texture.

Okra is a staple in most west african diets and i'm sure if it was so beneficial there wud be lots of africans walking about with great hair, having lived in the continent previously for close to 10yrs I can assure you that is not the case.

However, I can see the reasoning in applying okra topically to the hair, I'm sure the slime will provide great slip and possible conditioning but I would love to be proven wrong about taken internally and the resulting benefits for the hair.

Does anyone know what the acclaimed benefits are?

I totally agree with this.

I wondered about what you are talking about. Perhaps other elements of haircare was not practiced (like keeping the hair and ends moisturized) while eating the okra. Okra is a good source of zinc and iron - both important for hair growth and health.

Did you try this? I was going to do this last night but I ended up eating all of my okra. :lick:

Well I'm just making sure I eat Okra @ least 3x/week. If you steam the Okra it won't be slimy, and doesn't LUSH make a conditioner w Okra in it?
