i guess i really dont know how im suppose to brush or comb my hair properly while stretching i just try not to pull so hair.. what brushes and combs do you use.. i use a wide tooth comb but i think imma buy a denman..brush ... i dnno i just to avoide breakage as much as possible but i do need to brusy my hair from time to time for look sake

hey krissynick-

how are you wearing your hair? Do you cowash?

I'm transitioning and comb as little as possible - with a large tooth comb. I usually cowash and either put my hair in one plait or a bun and don't mess wiith it until the next cowash.

It is also important to comb from the end to the root and just be gentle. I tell everybody-treat your hair like delicate silk.

for now i do a rollerset and blow the roots but as i stretch that might become to much for me.... i dont cowash at all...

the other day i washed and airdried and then put into a bun but i was scared to comb i didnt want breakage

From what I gather, we're not supposed to really comb or brush in between washes.

Basically, I added scurl to my regi and now spray on dry hair every morning...turn my boar brush to the side and smooth over the top LIGHTLY only.

I don't even try to get close to my roots to get anything through that. Yes, even though I apply my scarf at night, in the morning it still looks a little bumpity bump underneath the smoothed over surface.

Thank God I work in an environment where no one cares what my hair looks like and thinks even my bun is cool :ohwell:

I would try and not worry about how smooth the bun or braid looks (because of the ng underneath) because you have a goal so who cares that it doesn't look as great as it did before the new growth. A couple more months and it would look better than ever

I know it's boring but all I do are buns and the only other style I wear, which is just on Sunday, is the twistouts. I twist on 80% dry hair and leave the twists in overnight and take down the next morning.

Honestly, it does look pretty good so that's my one good hair day, sorta:perplexed

hmm i dont get that about not combing... i feel combing helps if u do it the right way but anway i guess imma have to wear buns then while casue me and braid outs havent found a common understanding just yet.

I did have better luck with Friday's wash. I tried my first overnight deep condition using Biolage Balm, spiked with honey and eos

When I started detangling from the bottom the next morning, I found I could actually go through my roots.

I was scared because I thought I was going to hear the snap*crackle*pop but I never did. I don't know if it was the Biolage Balm or the DCing overnight that softened up my ng :ohwell:

ok thank.. will try

I personally wash my hair 1x weekly
No detangling( I don't need to)
No combing- I have coarse 4a hair so this is a must. around week 10 I start putting my hair in styles that don't require any manipulation. IMO combing two textures is breakage bound no matter no matter how gentle I am

What I do is:

1. finger comb daily with moisturizer on my hands and seal. I feel its important to rid my hair of any shedded hairs that may get caught in my NG. This way wash days go a lot easier and the shedded hairs have a lot less of a chance of clinging onto attached hair and causing breakage.

2. Hot oil treatments before every co-wash - I only comb my hair once it is washed, deep conditioned and leave-in applied. The hot oil treatment allows for me to detangle with my fingers and ease out any shedded hair
prior to washing

3. Pincurling at night - Pincurling keeps my hair smooth, ends neat and hair untangled. To pincurl I simply seperate my hair with my fingers moisturize each section, curl and pin.

BTW: I only cowash & DC once a week. NO SHAMPOO

umm do u use heat at all? im kinda lost cause u pincurl do u pin curl air dried hair?

I wash every day, condition and as long as I leave in a leave in creamy conditioner my hair never breaks. I think keeping the hair moisurized is the key!

I hardly comb my hair while stretching because I just can't get the comb through it easily and I don't want to risk breakage at the demarcation line. But I realise that I have to take care with it from about 6 weeks post. Moisturing and sealing the ends, sleeping in a satin cap and generally being very careful with it to minimise breakage. If you have to use a comb, use a wide tooth comb.

After using SAA in my conditioner and leave-in, I noticed how easy it was for my Jilbere comb to glide through my 4b newgrowth, even after over 21 weeks post! I only do this when my hair is wet, to detangle after washing. The SAA seems to help with the detangling all by itself. No breakage, no shedding, just stronger hair. :)

I also use Sylver2's scarf method to airdry my rollerset, which results in smooth, shiny hair no matter how many weeks post.

what is SSA?

what is SSA?
Wow, you're quick! I just added more to my post.

SAA is Silk Amino Acid which I buy from Lotioncrafters.com. It is actual silk (in liquid form) that the silk worm makes it's cocoon with and it adds moisture and strength to our hair. My hair seems to be stronger with SAA than my trusty Keraphix. Sareca is the one who started ladies buying SAA to add to hair products and I am grateful! :)

ok thanks again

-Do styles that don't require alot of manipulation.
-When everything else fails, wet your hair (CO, oil rinse, poo & dc).
-Take your time when detangling.

Mild protein every 2 weeks have helped to keep my hair pretty strong during stretches. I have noticed that my hair has the most breakage around 9 weeks post. (??) After that, it's smooth sailing. I have some serious protein lined up around week 9 because I already know I'm gonna have trouble.

Good Luck!

Hi, krissynick!

The most important thing you can do for your hair when doing long stretching (or transitioning) is moisture. However you can get it is very critical, and IMO, the more the better.

Sure low to no manipulation by combing and brushing is important, but not as important as moisture is to curbing breakage. When the hair has adequate moisture levels, it is not as likely to break when combed or brushed.

Moisture is what is working for me and I am sure that it will work for you, too :)

HTH!

When I have a lot of NG, I go to daily or every other day co-washes, and I also spray my NG with PM Awapuhi Moisture Mist. Its very moisturizing and helps tame my NG.

I keep my hair moisturized and in a bun seven days a week! I don't manipulate my hair until on wash day which is once a week.
