I've just been looking around at the beautiful natural ladies lately and....I WANNA TRANSITION!!! Honestly, I have NO problem with natural hair at all. I LOVE IT! It's just....Having the short hair after the BC! Yes, I know that's very superficial and you all can say all of the negative stuff you want cuz I deserve it! I am VERY self-conscious about my height and my long neck and I feel like short hair will just make me look taller and....well, basically, I feel like I'd look like a giraffe. I just wanted to share this and I also wanted to know if any of the other natural ladies could help me deal with this...I'm 7 weeks post right now and I could start going for it....but the short hair...the long neck...the height...:perplexed...HELP!

hey gurl!!

well, im 100% natural and I NEVER did the BC. my hair stayed the same length forever, because each time it grew a 1/2 inch, i cut that much...so thats always an option for you....or braids....you have plenty of choices!! HTH

Have you checked out www.nappturality.com
They have a transitioners forum with lots of style ideas. I was the same way about the short hair (superficial or not you have to be happy with your style!) I used braids and weaves and twist and everything. Do what's right for you. There is no right or wrong way to it. There is only your way! Information is power so I suggest going to nappturality and seeing what those ladies suggest.

you done have to BC and don't feel as if you should. Not everyone is comfortable with short hair and you shouldn't have to be forced to have it so you can be "better natural". Perhaps some extensions?

Some people feel they just don't suit short hair, myself included.
I personally don't think it's a crime to want to look good. And if I had short hair, I don't think I would look good.

If you want to transition, I say do it, but do a long transition. The transitioners support thread has a few long transitioners.

Awww, dont feel bad girl! I dont think thats superficial at all. If I transitioned, I would do so gradually as well. I just looove natural hair too, but the Big Chop is not for The Kid!!!

LOL-- I agree with kinikakes
I love the natural look and wish I was natural but I DO NOT have the face for that my head is WAY to big and funny shapped to do that *I had a short hair cut before and it was cute but not cute on me. Anyway- I think you should try transitioning it seems to be working for a lot of women here...

I feel the same way. Even when I had my first cut back in Jan 04, I hated it. I just don't like how I look with short hair. I like the idea of cutting as much as it grows, but would I be able to handle the two textures.  I don't know, I make that decision when I decide to cross that road:look: :ohwell: :perplexed

Chiel please! Join the club. Im oer a year in and Ive done a mini chop but I dont think a Big chop is for me. Ignore hte ticker inmy siggy cuz in 7 months I still wont be ready to chop. Ive moved my BC date twice and Im about to dimiss the whoel BC idea. I say just grow and trim. Its kinda hard to do (long transition) because you get anxious, you see the new texture and you wanna have a whole head like last week, you see the other complete naturals, you see the silky straight relaxed heads... And they dealing with 2 textures is hell but Im doing it and so are so many others. We're here to support you so if you ever have any questions there is a transitioners support thread AND my inbox is always open. Just remember that natural hair will not act as relaxed hair does. I actually have 2 different routines. The new growth gets one thing and the relaxed gets another. But hey its all good. its do-able. Dont feel bad though. Youre one of alot of us "non-choppers."

Girl my last relaxer was October, 2002 and I didn't chop till March 2005:eek: So I definitely understand what you are going through. I'm overweight and I didn't want short wide hair to go with my short wide body...lol. I kinda wished I had chopped earlier but hey, that was my pace at that time. So just transition and chop when you feel the time is right.:)

Yeah, it's hard to cut the hair off. I transitioned for 14 months and then chopped earlier than I had first planned. I was very happy to be rid of the relaxed ends and really loved being natural. But I had to get used to having short hair. It was hard. I had never had short hair before and I was really wanting it to be long again! And you know what... it is getting long again! Now when I look back, I can't believe how fast the first year went and I'm so happy with my progress! You might be surprised how time goes by and before you know it, you are getting that length back. But I completely understand how hard it is and all the feelings of "short hair won't look right on me". That's why I transitioned for over a year. I had just enough hair to put in a tiny pigtail on top of my head. I just wanted to be able to at least put it up!

I think you might consider transitioning for a while and see how it goes. The relaxer will always be there, as will the scissors, if you don't want to anymore. :)

*grins* I had my last perm in 97, and I didn't consider myself fully natural until 2000. I spent those 3 years in braids, kinky twists, cornrows, microbraids, and just about every other 'extension' style EXCEPT for wigs/weaves - I didn't even really PLAN on transitioning, I just KNEW I wasn't going to get another perm!
If you don't want to rock short natural hair, you most certainly don't have to! If you go to the salon to get your hair done now, the cost of getting braids is about the same - just spread out differently - and there are so many different kinds of things you can do! One suggestion I do have - if you go the braids route, be SURE to baby and love and support your hairline, and take GOOD care of the hair under the braids.

Thanks ladies for all your help! I'm definitely going to consider being natural. I think it would look much better on me than relaxed hair as long as it's shoulder length or longer. I might just get twists instead of a relaxer next. I hope I have the strength!

Well, if you want to go natural, just transition. Don't worry about the big chop. It's not for everyone. But you have to keep in mind that hair doesn't stay short forever. It grows. Look at mine. I started with hair shorter than 1/2 an inch. Now it's a lil over 7 inches and still going. So do whatever floats your boat. :)

No matter what you decide to do we are all here to support you.

I know that transitioning could be hard (especially dealing with the 2 textures). For the first 5-6 months of transitioning I would wash my hair and wera it in a bun or in a tucked pony tail. I would moisturize the ends at night. I tried the co-wash thing and it wasn't that bad until............the 6 and 7th month. Those were the worst for me hair was coming out everywhere. So I cut out the manipulation and stuck with once a week washing and no co-wash.

I feel as though it would have gone alot smoother if I had purchases BBD STRETCH alot earlier.
I bought this when I was almost 2months ago and it has been a gift from heaven. I can really comb through my 2 textured hair and it feels so good. I lose like 5 hairs during washing.

My advice if you consider doing the long term transitioning would be.....
GET BBD STRETCH!!!!
and trim at least a 1/2 inch every 2 months

Oh yeah I forgot to add that during the first 40 weeks I only straightened my hair once every 8 weeks. Right now I am wearing braids.

Alot of people wear twists, twist outs, and braid-outs so that the 2 textures blend together better. Basically don't feel as though you have to resort to heat. If you do that is cool too but just know your options...(I know I can't wait to try the bantu knots)

Good luck!!
