Cali in the house! I now have a twa. I rocked all the styles...but my signature look was the bun and my twists n' roller sets. Check out my fotki.

Hola!!! San Diego chick here!!!

I credit my hair to this site actually. After wearing weaves to grow my hair out, I didn't know what to do. The maintenance is credited to LHCF.

Ummm... I would definitely have to say that there are more gorgeous heads(relaxed and naturals) in Los Angeles than San Diego I would have to say... That is a personal opinion. Or course that's not to say that there aren't any, but when I used to go and visit my fam in LA I used to actually notice it, so I know there's a difference. Alot of girls in Daygo wear weaves I used to be one of them and that's just what we did. But the weather is probably a definite plus.

Well, I have to agree with you! I too live in San Diego and my sisters and I have noticed this as well. When I went to L.A. a few weeks ago it was like a hair show at the Fox Hills Mall :spinning:! It's something about the way the beauticians flat iron their hair. Some beauticians in San Diego can flat iron like they do, but they are a dime a dozen! I had a beautician that use to flat iron my hair really good but she moved away .

True! I used to drive 3 hours, one-way to get my hair done in LA. Now, I am a DIYer and I cannot get my hair like that to save my life! But my hair is healthy, though.

But guess that I will try, try again!

Oh hey there's another SD girl.. I don't know why but, I didn't think there were that many of us on this board...

I don't mean to sound mean or discredit anyone, but I haven't noticed many beauticians in SD that know how to work with below SL hair. One becuase they're usually trimming(CHOPPING) off any hair past that point because its "damaged" and alot of girls wear weaves. I go to a Mexican woman in Mira Mesa to color my hair. And she uses wide tooth combs, combs lightly from ends to roots, and all of that. I'm like, how come black stylists don't know that??

San Diego, South Bay representing here! I think it's the sunshine. You just feel better! I wish we had some good dependable salons here.

You ain't neva lied! The last time time I went to a "stylist" it was in Temecula. I took in a cute Jessica Simpson picture with an example how I wanted my hair. Why did I come out of there looking like a greasy "Shonuff" from the Last Dragon :angry2::angry2:

The owner must have felt my anger 'cause as I was walking out she said "Your hair looks cute" and I must have given her the look of death because she promptly exited right.

My poor husband, I cried for a long time and you know men just want us to be happy. He said that he would call a friend and they (together) would fix my hair. (NOT! but sweet).

I am still mad typing it out. I just may post some pictures later of that disaster.

I KNOW THEY ALWAYS GREASE YOU UP AND GEL YOU DOWN... LOL NOT ALL BUT MOST...

Man, there was a spark of fire in his stove from all of the vaseline! I kid you not!

But as upset as I was/am I can't be too mad because that is what had me searching for better hair practices and eventually led me to LHCF.

Ok…I honestly wish I was one to say that I got that Cali fly hair…NOT! I think I may need one of you to be my Cali buddy so I can join the click because right now my hair is not the business. :lachen:

I think it is the weather too! Plus there is something different about the So Cal press and curl, its med heat and nothing else, no damage and great swing, keeps for two weeks. I used to have fly so cali hair now it is kinda busted but, I'm working my way back.

Oh I hear ya! Exercise before hair always! Here is a link to an article I wrote for LHDC's blog about heat-straightened naturals and exercise.
http://www.longhairdontcare.net/ scroll down to my picture and click to read my article.
Now I did write this before I did the BKT! Reversion is almost non existent after I exercise, now that I have the bkt coating on my hair strands.

You are so awesome! Thanks!

Ya'll Diego ladies should come to one of our meetups! There are more people from SD on here. Anyway, I think it is the weather and better straightening techniques. I used to go to a lady in high school at a place called Positive Look. Her name was Tanya. She grew my hair the longest it had been at that time. She was great! I do my hair myself now. I still have that swang, but I learned how to flat iron hair from her. I never go to black stylists get my hair trimmed. I go to a white lady at Fantastic Sams. She's great. I had a black lady give me highlights before. She did a great job. If I get them again, I'll probably go to a white salon though.

Everybody and their momma either does hair or knows someone who does hair, LOL. Weather is a factor, and I think the fact that great hairstylist are plentiful in Cali helps too. You can get a great hairstyle/braids/ etc for fairly inexpensive. That's the one thing I miss about home...I never paid more that $60 in the 'hood for braids, including micros, because I had homegirls who braided hair. I learned how to do my own hair by watching my first stylist Melanie do mine and others' hair at her shop. and she was cool about explaining what she did and used (always a plus since most stylissts are fairly tight-lipped with info).

ETA I was also natural until I graduated highschool....I was a press n curl girl for sure!

What are you talking about? You hair in your avi looks shiny and smooth! :yep:

I grew up in Los Angeles, and had the prettiest Cali Silky presses the entire time. I didn't have to jump into the relaxer world until I moved to Hotlana. The weather has a lot to do with it but it seems the stylists are more skilled in the hair care arena as a whole in California as well. I had a stylist back then that could grow hair on a tree stump! LOL

Atlanta, your hair is looking FIERCE! Love it!

This cali girl surely miss that "Cali press" as they call it now! When I moved to NC I searched for some one to do my hair...my current hair stylist sort of knows how, but still not the same! The humidity in the south is the reason why so many women have perms and dare not go natural...I remain true to my roots! I just don't get my hair done as often...But now I am going to get this BKT...will I be considered natural still?
OMG  you looking mighty silky over there sista! You are Super Natural.... Beautiful...!

:lachen::lachen::lachen:

When I went to the south, I was like, people still do that??:ohwell:

ETA: The weather is the MAIN reason I don't want to move to FL. I'm gonna have to invest in Sabino. When is the IPO?

This is a topic near and dear to my heart. My sister was going to move here, she has mid-back length natural hair. A stylist in Atlanta burnt her hair and she had to get 4 inches chopped off. That did it for her. She moved back to Los Angeles and lives in Santa Monica. Even with the moist marine air, her presses still look tight.

Let me know when SMB goes public! :rof:

That's true too, the lifestyle is more active, you get out and exercise and enjoy the sunshine more when it's not 99 degrees with 99% humidity!!

They used to call them "dry presses" because they did not use grease. The reason why there was no damage is that they use heat protectors with polymers in them. I may interview my old stylist when I go back just for grins and ask her about her technique and come back and report.

Thank you dearheart, the BKT got me the closest to my Cali look since I have been in Atlanta, I'm a happy girl right about now!

I'ts definitely a combination of the weather, the stylists' techniques and the fierce hair competition! lol...J/K....but there are so many pretty ladies in the Los Angeles area with beautiful heads of hair, whether it be weave, naturally pressed 'n curled or relaxed. Them females up there in L.A. be doing it and mean business, I kid you not!:nono: lol. From where I stay, we be jockin' them stylists from L.A. something tough, because they be the best in the city and have you looking like a straight magazine model. Oh, they be doin' some hurr.:yep:

It is so funny since I think the same about women in NYC. I was born and raised in LA then moved to NYC and I was like why does everyone here have hair way past their shoulders and thick. It must be those dominican blow outs. I never had hair past shoulder length until moving away from LA for some reason. I also say the same about women in the south. When I went to the ATL, Alabama, and Mississippi I don't think I met someone with hair that wasn't atleast APL. But then again I think that I am more sensitized to women with long hair since I've been on LHCF. Now that I live in Chicago I see a mix of hair length and styles.

I remember they had a salon in Los Angeles back in the day named "Simply Raw" You had to get reservations like you were going to a show to get into that place it was crazy!! I went once and got one of those crazy asymmetrical bobs everyone was wearing back then.

ETA: Apparently they are still there, I don't know about the quality of their work now. It was in the early 80's the last time I visited.

I know of a stylist who moved from my home town of Carson California here to the Metro Atlanta area that does the Cali silky press. I haven't been to her myself but I have been in communications with her and she sounds like she got ti going on. I plan to go to her when I get some more length for a cut. (I don't need the silky so much anymore ) if anyone is interested in checking her out send me a PM.

ETA: I found out about her the same time I found out about the BKT. I want to be an Action Figure again (workout warrior) so I can't be tied to a salon. But I would like a place to go to get a nice cut when I'm ready.

Thank you girl  that was from the help of my ceramic flat iron. I vowed not to use heat on my hair because its damaged. So as of right now I don't know what to do with it. I tried a roller set and wrapped it but it came out ok but really I am too lazy for roller sets. Right now it's in one braid pinned up in a clip...not a good look at all :perplexed
