HELP!!!!! My post about the 4" set back was a cry for help.... I have more hair drama than anyone I know. My regime is not working and I'm CONFUSED.

Right now, I wash once a week, I use different shampoos, (sometimes CON, or Elasta QP) and deep condition with UBH conditioner and Keracare Moisturing conditioner. I use Surge, WGO, and infusium. I use very little heat usually air dry (I use heat about once a month) I wear protective styles 99% of the time. I relax every three months.

Currently I'm using Mizani H2O Intense night-time treatment at night and I sleep in a satin cap on satin pillow cases.

Anyone have any suggestions as what I'm doing wrong. What I should add or take from my regime to stop the split end, breakage and shedding.

What protective styles do you wear? Certain protective styles aren't so "protective" for some people's hair...

How often do you re-style your hair during the week? Too much manipulation can cause unnecessary wear and tear on the hair...

How often do you comb your hair? If you comb often, avoid combing your hair too much, especially when it's dry....

I see that you use Surge (a hair revitalizer), WGO (an oil), and Infusium23 (protein leave-in), Mizani h20 (intense treatment)... I think that's too much for your hair and you need something for MOISTURE, especially since you only wash your hair once a week.

Hope that helps!

So sorry to hear about your hair woes, diamondlady.

I can't imagine what is wrong with your regimen, but I will tell you that I tried the Mizani H2O nighttime treatment a few years ago, and my hair started acting weird, so I don't use it anymore. I love all the rest of the Mizani products that I use (Moisturefuze con, Botanifying poo, Conditioner styling lotion, and sometime Rose H2O). My relaxer is Mizani Rhelaxer, with lye.

As far the shedding, when I started looking at this site and doing pre-poos and henna, my shedding decreased dramatically. I use the pre-poo that is listed here, http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=68944&page=3, and I use Jamila brand superior body art quality henna, with the mixture that Kinikakes used, but modified a little for my hair, which is:

100 mg of henna (half henna and half Amla powder - I used the Hesh brand amla)
1 1/2 tbsp Dabur Amla oil
3 tbsp EVOO
3 tbsp honey
3 tbsp coconut oil (I use the Nature's Way organic extra virgin coconut oil)
2 good squirts of conditioner (I use Mane & Tail con)

Perhaps your hair isn't liking the protective styles as much? Maybe let it out for a couple of days, switching it up? I don't do protective styling much (except for cornrows), so I don't want to make too many suggestions, ya know?

I hope this helps; it will turn around; hair hugs to you! :D

Im not a hair expert, by any means, but speaking from my own personal experience perhaps you should try to wash less with shampoo and more with conditioners. Conditioner washes have helped to turn my hair around.

ETA: in additon I think Poohbear hit he nail on the head... overall regimen needs more moisture.

Poorbear, I use braids, which worked well in the past. I just had to make sure they weren't too tight on the edges. My stylist had a hard time doing it without it being a little tight so I started doing myself. I wear phony pony sometimes. (Changing the position of the pony and making sure it's not too tight) When it's cooler, I wear a quick weave with braids underneath. I rarely comb my hair, (with the braids, I don't have to) I spray a little UBH Dew on my hair each day. I'm not real sure how good it is.

Tricie,

Thanks for your suggestions. Acturally, I've been thinking about henna quite a bit. I haven't made a final decision but since my hair is getting so thin I thought henna might be a good solution.

Thanks Lotus, I have been thinking of adding a mid-week condition wash to my regime. What do you think of UBH Dew? I have been using it each day but I'm not sure it's good, and about mid-week my hair starts looking puffy when I wear a phony-pony.

Oh okay. Well I'm going to have to agree with tricie when she said to let it out. Constantly wearing braids, weaves, and phony ponies can be too much stress on your hair and can cause more harm than good. There's nothing wrong with wearing your hair out as long as you take good care of it. Or if you want to wear protective styles, do it with your own hair instead of fake hair.

What are you using as a daily/leave-in moisturizer? I see the H20 but I belive that has mineral oil in it so your hair may not be getting the moisture it needs. Also are you using Infusium straight or diluted? You may want to dilute it more or try dropping it.

The ladies have hit it on the head.

The only thing I would add is work on your protein and moisture balance.
For the shedding: Try Essations Mender. (if you need the exact name PM me. I can't think of it off the top of my head.)

ETA...Here you go. I went to find the exact name.
Essations Instant Hair Mender

I've been using UBH Dew but I don't know how good it is. It leaves my hair a little puffy by mid-week. Senimoni, do you know of a good daily moisturizer for 4B type hair.

Personally I like...a few things...Scurl (in moderation can get sticky if you over use), NTM mousse (if you don't want to weigh your hair down)...but my main everyday staple is "Organics Leave-in Liquid Hair Mayonnaise by Africa’s Best"

HTH.

Welcome. Have you tried to cut back on the shampoo all together? I rarely use shampoo, unless I'm deep clarifying or perming. CO washes are able to get my scalp/hair clean. When I do shampoo (EMB) it's cut with conditioner and/or honey and I apply alma oil/conditioner before hand on dry hair. *I live in TX too... and I dont know if you have a water softener, but my water is H.A.R.D- hard. :). I've used Dew before and will likely use it again when I wear straight or flat ironed styles. *I think Dew was desinged to compliment straight blow drying/flat ironing styles* For my protective styles, however, Dew does not cut it.

I'm still searching for my 'perfect' :look: protection style moisturizer and I think I've found it... Nu-Grow spray with Moisturizer, the jury is still out... but so far *fingers crossed* I love it.

Dont remember from you post... but do you clarify? TX water is terrible on the hair .

Funny, I have the NTM mousse under the sink. I got it about a month ago but have not used it. I also have Scurl, I used frequently when I had the plaits braids instead of the corn rows.

Will the Scurl work good when my hair is straight and I need a relaxer. I usually go about 3-months before relaxing and the new growth gets pretty rough.

Depending on how much you use, it may revert, but the same can be said for the Hair Mayo too. Or you could use it at night and tie it down...so it still dries straight.

Lotus,

The shampoo helps me to de-tangle but I'm willing to see how well I do without the shampoo for a while.

Occasionally I clarify with ION Clarifying shampoo. I don't do it on any kind of schedule, just every once in a while. I use to try so many things on my hair, I would start to feel it necessary to clarify.

Can't thank you enough for the suggestions. I'm definitely going to try just condition washes for a while.

Ditto, Lotus, on the hard Texas water! I had to get a water softener; that hard water was ruining everything, dishes, laundry, I could go on! :)

I've not tried the NTM mousse, but if the ladies say it's good, then it's good!!

For my rough ng, I use a mixture of NTM silk leave-in, a couple pumps of
S-curl, and a few drops of these oils (Amla, Jasmine, Kemi, Vatika, WGHO, & Doo Gro Stimulating growth oil), and put it directly on my scalp. This makes it way manageable, although I've not tried to go 3 months. So far, I can only go 8 weeks; I may try for 10 weeks!

Oh, yeah, like senimoni, I use Infusium 23 leave-in, and I dilute mine, too.

You should try a protein treatment DRC-28 (can order from www.ibeautyny.com), then DC with FIXATIVE by Straight request (can order from www.paynesbeautysupply.com). Or instead of the DRC try the APHOGHEE 2 min keratin treatment until it gets back healthy (can purchase at Sallys). Try affirmadoyl leave in for your hair type. This bought my hair back from Bleaching and relaxing. :) For oil I use Black & Bossie "All natural hair & Scalp Oil" by Kalawentz. (Black & Bossie is the bomb it has: aloe vera, biotin, vitamins B5,A,E, Bee pollen,RNA, Wheat germ oil,Keratin, Cystin, hydrolized protein)

Toyztoy, I have DRC-28 and I wish I had your info first. I paid $60 for the bottle I have but it's been a while since I used it. I used the Aphoghee 2 min keratin treatment this weekend. Good to know someone is thinking along the same lines as I am.

I really think the ladies are right when they say I need more moisture. I would like to know if you know of any good moisturizers for everyday use.

Thanks for the Payne Beauty Supply web site. I love it, brings out the PJ in me

It sounds like tooo much protien in your current hair care regimin, and like you need more moisture. Like Letita said "work on your protein and moisture balance". Since I can't physically read your current product lables I can't be sure your products are high protien products but if they are and you add more protien treatments to it you will get even more breakage.

It has also been highly recomend on this board to Henna for adding shine, moisture and thickening with Amala hot oil treatments for shine and conditioning. I Henna and love it and am waiting for Amala oil to arrive.

Too much protien makes hair brittle and will make it break off.

Check out this link she was having a lot of breakage and did this to stop it (I've ordered both products and will be tring what is described in the link below:

Instead of washing once a week, try doing a mid-week wash with only conditioner. This mid-week wash will hydrate the hair and keep it well conditioned until your weekly wash.

Try sticking to a staple of shampoos, for now, in order to pin down what works and what doesn't. Also, use moisturizing shampoos. I use Nexxus Therrappe. I used to use Creme of Nature's (the purple) and that worked really well also. When you shampoo, only use it on your scalp and not the rest of your hair. When you condition, use that on the rest of your hair.

Also, replace the Infusium for now with something that has more moisture such as Mango Butter, S-Curl, Profectiv....or some of the other ladies' product suggestions.

Concentrate on the ends more. Do more baggies. Pay more attention to the ends when deep conditioning and with daily moisturizing.

Reevaluate the styles you are wearing, because it may be causing stress to your strands. Try to comb hair only when wet. Or use a spritz bottle of water and light oil prior to combing or daily styling. Do not forget to seal your moisturizers with oil...that helps seal in the moisture all day.

Good luck.
