Ok, Here Goes.....(long)

Ok ladies, I'm embarking on an 8-week weight-loss challenge at work. So I decided to add my own personal mini-challenge to stretch my relaxer (I'm currently 8 weeks post, so by the end of the weight-loss challange, it will be 16 weeks----my first stretch!)

I'm doing this for several reasons:
1) I'm doing almost daily cardio, and I KNOW that if I get a perm, I'm gonna want to skip working out.
2) I recently discovered twist-outs as a beautiful, sexy, no heat style and I find that I like my twist outs to be big and voluminous (which will happen with more new growth underneath to provide the volume I like)
3) I'm fascinated by ladies on here who are BSL and MBL and say they got there by stretching. I'm currently SL (have been striving for APL for months now).

My main concerns:
1) I co-wash twice and shampoo wash/DC once a week. After I co-wash, I either airdry and twist or wet bun. Is this too much manipulation? There's a lot of detangling going on but I want to retain as much growth a possible so that when I finally relax I have major progress!
2) Are twist-outs considered a protective style? I'm having so much fiun wearing them but I want to make sure I'm not doing damage and setting myself back.
3) I just purchased Aphogee 2-min, to help my hair withstand all of the manipulation. I've never used a protein condish before and am a little scared. How would u guys suggest I incorporate this into my reggie?

Any advice you ladies can give me would be helpful. I just want to make sure I'm doing the right things and not hindering my progress unknowingly.

Thank you!!!!!

as long as your hair isn't hitting your shoulders, and isn't exposed to the elements (i.e., seatbelt, car window, purse straps, brushing your shoulders consistently), it's a protective style. depends on how short your twistout shrinks up, but it's a great style if you're avoiding heat!

good luck to ya in your stretch!! i'm currently 5 weeks. the longest stretch i've had since my first relaxer at age 6 was 11 weeks. so i'm doing my first long term stretch as well! so excited!

1) I don't think it's too much manipulation, but it depends on your hair. If it's been fine so far, I'd say keep it up and adjust if needed. Just make sure you are keeping your new growth detangled and really well moisturized.

2)Twistouts are not a true protective style. A protective style means that your ends are not exposed. Now if you pinned it up into a french roll or something like that, then it'd be protective. Twistouts are still a good no-heat style and as long as you keep your ends moisturized you should be fine.

3)If you're doing fine without the aphogee, then don't add it just because. Now if you find that your hair is getting over moisturized, then try it out. From what I've read, you should just follow it with a moisturizing conditioner. So you could do it before you DC.

thanks so much msa! That really helps. I think I may alternate a couple days twistouts, a couple days wet bun, to make sure my ends stay damp and protected, at least part of the time.

I was doing something similar when I was just stretching my relaxers. The only difference is I was bunning/baggie bunning 24/7 and rarly did any other forms of manipulation. You would get progress reguardless, but more with less mani by just getting it as simple as possible.
2) Are twist-outs considered a protective style? I'm having so much fiun wearing them but I want to make sure I'm not doing damage and setting myself back. Yes twist-out are considered a protective style, but I believe in total protection styles such as buns, and baggie buns. You should do them sometimes to max. the protection of your ends.

How would u guys suggest I incorporate this into my reggie? Yes, Aphogee is good as a mild to median protein treatment, I don't use it anymore, but it was good when I was. You should use it atleast once a week if you co-wash heavy. The min. of twice a month.

Any advice you ladies can give me would be helpful. I just want to make sure I'm doing the right things and not hindering my progress unknowingly.

Thank you!!!!!

I feel the same way about ladies who are BSL/MBL/WSL and say they got their thorough protective styling.

Good luck on your personal weight loss challenge and your hair challenge!
