Oh, my breakin' hair!

What is a good remedy for moderate breakage? I have been experiencing it for the past few days. Actually I had mild breakage a week ago and I did an Aphogee. It might have been too soon (I did one about a month ago), but I wanted to stop the breaking. Well, instead it worsened. I think my hair dried out a day or two after treating it. I was using the Caruso and not alot of moisturizer. My hair was dry looking. Little 1-3 inch bits have been coming out, especially in the morning when I go to comb it(I finger comb or use a shower comb). It has been constant. I had it in a bun today. TOnight I CO washed it, but I still seem to be getting little pieces.

I think that your hair has had enough protein and now you need to use lots of moisturizing deep conditioners and very minimal protein for a while.

Two aphogee treatments is enough.

Maybe something ultra moisturizing like s-curl would help... maybe you could do one of those s-curl buns that I've heard about on this board for a few weeks.

I agree with Porche19. A moisturizing conditioner and a moisturizer is definitely needed. What do you use after shampooing your hair? How often do you wash your hair?

I third that, I too was frustrated with breakage. I did an Aphogee the breakage did stop a days later. But I had to constantly add moisture. I deep conditioned with Keracare Humecto and con washed with. Use a good moisturiser and lots of it. I would avoid shampoo for the week to stop it from drying out any further. My hair did come back to life minus the breakage

Melodee honey what's going ON with your hair all of a sudden???? TYou weren't having these problems before, were you???? :(

I agree - go back to moisture for a while use a REALLY moisturizing deep conditioner ASAP (like tonight if you can) and follow it with a really moisturizing leave in. Maybe instead of doing Aphoghee you could (once your hair returns to normal) do a CREAMY protein regularly to take care of your breakage problem?

I can't imagine what's wrong? :(

Thanks guys. I used L'oreal Mega Moisuture last night as a moisturizing conditioner. My breakage appears to have stablized for now. I will try CO washing it every three-five days and adding alot of moisture instead of trying to make it super strong.

Tracy, I don't know why girl. I had some bloods tests run to see if I'm not anemic again or suffereing from probs with my thyroid. It seems like just when I get my hair to the length to inspire/motivate me, it starts shedding or breaking. I am a worrier, so that definately adds to my problems.

Hi Melodee,
Just looked at your album. You and your hair are so pretty. I'm so sorry to hear you are having problems with your hair :( . I hope you figure it all out real soon. The ladies seem to have given you some good advice so far. Don't forget too that if you live in a cold climate--sometimes winter can wreak havok on our hair no matter what we do. Good luck. :Rose:

ors olive oil lotion is nice and moisturising. as is carol's daughter hair milk. Wash, deep condition your hair then keep it moisturised with these products or something similar and you should be fine.

I think that aphogee should come with a goverment health warning..Id never put that stuff near my hair again.

African's best-Organics Liquid Leave in Mayo is Great! It has worked wonders on my hair to soften and stop breakage. Especially since my hair gets really dry in the winter. It is hair mayo but better b/c its a leave in so u can use daily if you want...

Here's a pic of the bottle...

Hey Melodee,

I think it could be the protein too. I have come to realize that my hair does not like much protein either. 2 weeks ago I did used Emergencee and my hair was OK. My hair was hard and breaking after I did my hair this past weekend too. Now it didn't help that I had to use a sample pack of this shampoo I never tried because I ran out of the good stuff. I also tried a leave-in protein thing (bad idea). My hair was sooooo hard and hairs were everywhere. I was getting concerned. So since I found the products I needed I shampooed last night. I first used a shampoo to clarify (tea tree) then I used my other shampoo (PhytoSpecific Intense Nutrition). I followed that up with the Aphogee 2 min Keratin Reconstructor (this is a light cream based protein) then follwed that with Salerm Wheat Germ Mask for 20 mins. My breakage was reduced DRASTICALLY. I realize my hair doesn't want those heavy proteins.

Yes ITA w/ KAddy and all of you who said too much protein was causing my problem. It didn't seem like it at first, but the breakage has so unusual for me.

I've since tried CO washing every night and conditioning with Mega Moisture. My hair has done a 350. Not quite a 360, but close.

I'm confused:

Kaddy: Is the Aphogee intensive keratin reconstructor that you used different from the Aphogee protein treatment that Melodee used? Could you (or anyone else) explain the difference in protein strength between them?

Hi IvyMichael! Sorry to confuse you.

I believe the one Melodee is talking about is different than the one I used. The one I use is not the "heavy" protein that most ladies use by Aphogee. The "heavy" one is watery (thin) and you are to sit under a dryer for like 5 minutes until your hair is hard like a helmet. Then you gently rinse it out and follow with a moisturizing conditioner.

The intensive keratin reconstructor is a cream protein that is rather fruity smelling. It is left of for 2 mins you don't have to get under the dryer. You can get under the dryer (if I remember correctly) with a cap on for 5 mins. I got the following info from a website on it.
ApHOGEE Keratin Reconstructor provides a weekly regimen that can be prescribed for home use between salon visits. Restores softness and elasticity to dry, brittle hair Repairs damage caused by chemical and heat services. This concentrated blend of keratin amino acids, botanical oils, and vitamins does wonders to restore strength and softness to hair that requires a deep penetrating treatment. Outstanding on tinted, bleached or relaxed hair.
Ingredients: Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Polysorbate-60, Behenamidopropylamine Behenate, Stearalkonium Chloride, Centrimonium Chloride, cocodimonium Hydrolyzed Hair Keratin, Hydrolysed mucopolysaccharides, soduim-coco Collagen Amino Acids, Wheat germ fatty acids, linoleic adic, linolenic acid, arachnidonic acid, squalane, avocado oil, acetamide MEA, panthenol, wheat germ oil, jojoba oil, tocopherol, Tocopherly acetate, sulfur, anodimethocone, polyquarternium-10 ( holy crap) linoleamdopropyl PG-Dimonium, Chloride phosphate, tallowtrimonium chloride, nonoxynol-10, cocoyl sarcosine, sorbitol, fragrance, imidazolidinyl urea, methylparaben, propylparaben.

Here's a pic. They do sell the little packets of this too.

Thanks so much for the clarification, Kaddy. I was using the reconstructor under the impression that it was the hard core protein treatment. And I'd been wondering why my hair wasn't getting hard when I used, and why MY Aphogee smelled good, when others said the protein treatment smelled bad! I'm gonna run out and buy the protein treatment. Thanks!

Ivy, The one I used is called Aphogee Treatment for Damaged Hair and it is a rectangluar bottle with purple writing.

i like ORS carrot oil mixed with dove conditioner. that specific combo stops breakage in its tracks for me.

I second what the others have said only I would do the moisturizing conditioner as a deep conditioner and get under the dryer weekly with one.
