Yeah, it's really common in Nigeria. My mom used to do it to me when I was a kid, and my aunts still do it to their daughters.

The only thing is that most of the time, the thread is worn for a while as an actual style, which was not so fun growing up, because the kids on the playground would have a field day with it.

:yep:

I used to get this done as a kid...hers looked way better than mine did

...and I would take the thread (which was regular sewing thread) and unravel it before morning so I didn't have to go to school like that. My mom woud wake up pissed

for stretching do you wrap the thread around wet or dry hair? seems like it would take forever to dry... i would like to try this so i can do a dry twist out on stretched hair

I can't let my hair dry unstretched. After conditioning i use a micro-fibre towel, apply leave-in then plait in sections. Depending on how much time i have i can have as few as two or as many as 8 sections. Obviously the bigger the section the longer it will take to dry.
You can do it on dry hair - i just do it on damp because my purpose is to stretch my hair after i've washed it.

I had kinky twists put in as the braider (African) used this technique to curl the twists. It was really interesting. I was expecting her to pull out perm rods but instead she used a threading technique.
I filmed it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYXcsarYuoo

I've seen The Damn Salon demo this before. I really like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nG2Kn2GznMY&feature=youtu.be vid though and the corkscrew look you can get with the weaver thread. I bet it looks awesome when done on wet hair and then taken down when dry. Might need to try it out when I get some time.

Does anyone still do this? I just discovered this method on YouTube.

How long does it take to dry?

How long to thread?
