Not Retaining Length

Ahhhh....this might be the problem right here. You might be manipulating your hair a little more than necessary??

I know for me too I haven't been seeing the results I have wanted to (I feel like my hair has basically stayed the same length for almost 2 years :nono: It should be MUCH longer than this) and when I looked at my regimen I noticed that I was not being gentle w/my natural hair, and I was manipulating it, wearing it out, and styling it way too often than I probably should have been. I've now changed up my regimen some and have decided to do more protective styling and keeping my ends covered (since those are the oldest---and weakest--part of the hair). :yep: We'll see what happens.
Ditto Crystalicequeen123 :) Thank you for your input, noted. :)

@snoop I had the opposite problem. I could not for the life of me figure out how to run a comb through my SL fro. I swear the lack of hand eye coordination struggle is real :lachen:

Anywho @snookes if you have fine hair, then that is just contributing to the problem. I recommend joining the fine hair support group. The thread is not as active as it used to be but there is a ton of good info on there.

@overtherainbow I used an afro pick ;)

Good luck with the protective styling I hope that it works for you

I have fine hair. I never had a problem getting to APL but then after that was breakage city. Now, I have my routine down pat.

My routine consists of the following:

Protein treatments: I like Komaza (every two weeks)

Protein leave ins but I use like once or twice a week, I like Komaza Shea Butter, I used to be afraid of protein leave ins but now I use them mostly on the weeks of my Deep Conditioners only

Good Deep Conditioner: I like Aussie Moist a big challenge to find Conditioners with no or without the double cones but I think as long as you can wash it out well. Plus as long as the conditioners don't have double cones, I guess that is okay. Komaza has a deep conditioner but it doesn't have that slip obviously because it doesn't contain double cones. I put a hot towel over my plastic cap and then put a hair scarf over that for about 3o minutes to 60 minutes. Don't do it for longer fine hair can't take over moisturisation.

Dusting every three months and I mean light dusting not trimming.

No color

No extension braids

My moisturizer that I like is curl prep sweet buttah

I keep my hair in celie braids as my protective style
For a different look, a pony puff, roller set or wig it

I wash my hair once a week but before I jump into the shower, I finger detangle pre poo with some light oils, and spritz my hair with some water to soften my hair

I oil my ends everyday and use shea curl prep buttah on the shaft and ends of my braids

I take down my braids and spritz with water and do my moisturizing routine only once a week

I wash in sections with ouchless goody bands the big ones I am down from 10 sections to now seven. Washing in sections means I use the bands to hold my hair but unravel them when I am washing that area and put it back in when finished.

I finger detangle but important to also make sure all the shed hairs are out

I do not baggy that leads to over moisturisation
I do not keep braiding my hair everyday
I do not use products with glycerin as they make my hair drier

Thank you AlmondEyes I looked up the products you use on NaturallyCurly. com. They sound lovely. I made my own shea butter mix, I mixed shea butter with giovanni direct leave in and also Lush's R&B hair moisturiser & I get loads out of it and is all I use. Oh and I dilute some in a spray bottle and spritz my hair with it.

I can't tell if my hair is over moisturized after deep conditioning or baggying to be honest. It don't feel mushy at all is all I know.

Ps how long did it take you to get to APL??

Regards Michelle

I also wanted to add that I am not super strict about rebraiding nightly unless you braid too tight or braid too small which fine hair doesn't like. If you have dry hair you may need to go into your hair daily to moisturize just be gentle and use no combs.

I am not APL now, I shaved my hair last year. I am about to hit shoulder by the end of this year maybe beginning of next year. In my other hair journeys whether relaxed or natural it always took two years from my cut to get to APL. But this is the first time I shaved it like a carpet.

You seem to be on the right track.

All I will say is that just do a regular protein treatment every two to four weeks and you won't have to worry about over moisturisation.

Hi yes I do not do the braids too tight and I'll try not to do them too often just after a main wash and maybe once in between washes. I will also try to be gentle lol, and do more finger detangling. I only comb on wash days anyway.

Oh and I've just done a Aubrey's GPB treatment and only left it on for 30 mins instead of the 60 mins I usually do with heated cap.

Cheers for all your help and advice AlmondEyes and here's to longer healthier hair :) :)

Most welcome.

And I would not use a cap with the GPB because that will turn into a mild treatment.

Maybe you don't need to comb out on wash days either just know how to better finger detangle and use a slippy conditioner.

Cheers to happy hair growing.

Also drink lots of water (don't over do it) and eat healthy.

But I also wanted to add that, I am very torn on the issues of not using silicones for a conditioner. I know using them makes my detangling routine easy breezy due to the slippy nature but I know that sometimes it can cause the hair to end up getting overly dry mid week. I will experiment with some non silicone conditioners and see how that works out too.

But I know that the whole silicone debate really affects women who use these conditioners as leave ins or as co washes primarily. I believe if you wash your hair properly one should not have the major issues. Just avoid cones in the regular products and shampoos.

Hmm yes I know what you mean cones are a tricky one. So I don't need to deep condition with cap with the AO GPB?
