I normally don't write reviews but I felt this one deserved it simply because I was skeptical about Joico because of how pricey it was yet I kept seeing people rave about it

Most things people rave about, it's no gray area for me... it's either black or white: good or bad.

History:

Back in 2007 to 2009 I was transitioning to natural, then texlaxed then back to relaxed... hair was still in great condition and i was retaining length to past my shoulders.

Everything was fine, perfect, until I decided to join the Navy 0_0. Boot camp required all females to have their hair, unevenly and unprofessional, chopped off to one same length above the collar.

My job in the navy requires a lot of swimming and water survival training about the first year of my training so the breaking began then due to the constant washing and heat to hurry up to put it in a uniformed bun for the rest of the day. And all this was this time last year. It was almost an everyday thing for awhile. =\

It's been nothing but damage and loss of hair no matter how often I trimmed or treated it.... till now.

I Stopped being cheap and stopped buying the $4.99 small bottles of joico of just the wash and cond.

And got the full sized bottled:
Moisture Recovery shamp and cond
K-pak reconstructor & intense hydrator (i heard its best to use the hydrator after the recon)
Moisture recovery treatment which i heard was good for DC'ing. (love it, it looks like vaseline actually or something, not your typical appearance of conditioner)
Daily leave in spray detangler - its a heat protectant and moisturizer at the same time.

An OBVIOUS improvement but its pretty damaged. I'm trying so hard to avoid cutting ALL the damaged off again but then i wouldn't be able to put my hair in a military bun for work, which would result me using heat almost everyday to make it decent/presentable.

Throughout the week every time I do my hair theres less and less damage. And that daily leave in detangler, i use that to put my hair in the standard military bun for work... and it drys really soft. I love it.

The NOW pics below, is today after I did my wash. It seems "almost decent" to me compared to what I know my hair is capable of, but this is better than it has been this past year to be honest. I need a trim in some parts still but I'm being stingy and trying to wait it out a little bit more.

Is it true that hair growth/lenght retainment slows down due to damaged ends? I just want to keep growing it, or try to, until I can trim it and still be able to put my hair in a bun for work.

Hopefully I can at least reach the past shoulder length i had one before and continue growing. Hopefully :( Everything I used/did before just isn't working anymore, so hopefully a little joico would help start the process....

to answer your question, the growth rate wouldnt change. but of course if your ends are damaged you are not going to be able to retain length. your ends might break off or split all the way up your hair. this may create an illusion of slow growth, when it is actually a lack of retention.

Nice review! I'm always tempted to try Joico's entire line of products, but my regimen is pretty set now. Reviews like these usually get filed in my mental roladex just in case I ever have issues in the future or one of my staple products gets discontinued or something.

I think your hair still looks pretty great, nice and thick! I don't think its true that damaged ends have anything to do with growth. Possibly retention if your hair keeps breaking form the ends as you grow though.

Your hair looks very pretty!

Damaged ends don't cause hair growth to slow down, but they do affect length retainment if the ends break off.

Thanks everyone! (And thanks on the back muscle compliment, pull-ups are my favorite)

I was afraid the answer to my question about split ends would be that. I just may have to go get a legit trim and just keep wearing it clipped up until it grows out again. sigh...
