If Oprah doesn't put oil in her hair, what makes it so shiny and still bouncy? Even if I use silicone it doesn't last all day. I've been wondering how can I get that shine without weighing my hair down.

The only way my hair is super shiny with no oil is when my stylist does a blow out. She uses no oil, a dimes worth of serum and thats it. I think the temperature of the marcels have a lot to do with it. High heat, extremly quick, no sizzle. No damage. I cannot recreate though.

i sometimes put monoi oil on my hair before blow drying and flat ironing. Avon Dry Ends Serum gives it alot of shine. i love that stuff. i think it's more in the technique than the products.

I agree its more technique than products. Keeping the hair as smooth as possible while it dries is key, whether that be via blowdrying or rollarsetting. A bit of serum does help too to keep the hair smooth. The smoother it is, the more it'll reflect shine. There has to be ZERO frizz.

Definitely technique and the type of products you use! I just recently started using oil in my hair again. (WGO) I think if you use the right moisturizing shampoos + conditioners in your hair you won't need it (or as much). My hair comes our much lighter and shinier when I don't use oil(or any moisturizer)in my hair. My flat irons even work better!

As an ancillary point - it also has to do with the "mechanical" condition of the hair - how flat the cuticle is laying which products can and do affect....
If you use the right shampoo (which will avoid roughing and lifting the cuticle too much), a conditioner with a low PH and a cool rinse, you can almost get the same degree of shine as you would if you added oil or serum.
Adding a little serum, and a great drying technique, that, again, maximizes flattening of the cuticle - and you have ultra shiny hair.
Rinses are also a big help...but I won't get started on that - y'all all know my usual refrain.

It also depends on what Andre considers Oil. Example: Technically Jojoba oil is not an actual "Oil". Jojoba is actually a liquid wax.
I love Oprah but who knows what Oprah uses on her hair? I used to dress celebrities for a living and I learned a long time ago to never believe anything that Celebs say. She has never given up any information about the products that she uses on her hair. Oprah could be smearing pork fat on her hair and we would never know. Oprah could be wearing weave tracks every day and we would never know.
All of you ladies have a great hair routines. Some of your routines are probably better than Andre's. If you ask me most of the ladies here have better looking hair than Oprah. For all we know Andre could be getting hair care advice from us on this board.

On the "After the Show" program, Oprah and Andre said they use the "Phyto- (something)" on her hair. I would keep in mind, that even though her hair looks great and bouncy, it isn't long. She is using heat on her hair almost every day. Her recommendations may work better for those seeking to maintain a short-to-medium hairstyle.

Im one of those OIL HATERS
. Except if its a hot oil pre treatment homemade (jojoba, evoo,& coconut) or St Ives hair repair moisturizing hot oil treatment (good stuff). Other than that the least tidbit of oil weighs down the bouncinesss and softness. My hair is Super shiny and bouncy when I take my rollers out and even with all that I upgrade the shininess w/ proclaim glossing polish. It adds long lasting shine and does not weigh the hair down at all, I mainly use it for its moisturizing properties (since I dont use oil) and its extras. It contains aloe extract, wheat germ oil, sweet almond oil, safflower seed oil, castor seed oil, and some other scientific stuff. The natural oils keep my hair moisturized. Anyhoot, I love this stuff its $5.49 for a big bottle compared to Sebastian Laminates serum which runs for about 15dollars for a tiny bottles and does not do
.
My regime goes as follows, which I think contributes lots to my shininess and bounce:
wash w/ Loreal mega moisture nurturing shampoo (nothing compares)
deep condition- humectress or 10 en 1 (when I use humectress I add some of the suave humectant, it prolongs my bottle and its good too)
If rushed for time and I dont do the hot oil pre- poo, I use St ives hot oil.
Leave ins: Headress and Thermasilk light leave in. The thermasilk works when under the dryer,I rollerset, it makes hair real soft and shiny, plus it speeds up the drying process

I concur with AFashionSlave, especially when you say that we should not pay so much attention to the hair of celebs. such as Oprah and Beyonce. In fact, I am not at all clear why so many LHCF members have become so exorcised by Beyonce's hair saga. Somwhat disturbing, in my opinion.

When I started reading this thread even before I got to your post I was thinking I wonder if she uses Phyto 7 or Phyto 9 cream. I've used one tube in my life and I always loved how my hair came out, I'd put it in my wet hair, blow-dry, and then use my curling iron and get gorgeous shiny, light, blowing in the wind hair. The $22 price tag is what keeps it from being a staple in my beauty closet, but I'm sure Oprah doesn't worry about that!

Thankyou for all your tips and comments. My routine is a lot different from everyone else, but I'm fine as long as my hair is growing healthy. I do not put oil in my hair, besides a little jojoba or loreal serum. I have plenty of bounce without using a blowdryer. But sometimes I feel that it lacks that natural shine. Sometimes I have it and sometimes I don't and I'm very consistent with my products. I tried the hennalucent treatment in neutral, because I thought that was what I needed to enhance my natural shine. It just made my hair extremely soft. Oh well...
