Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

They 3 black women on the cover

1. Beyonce

2. Star Jones!!!

and I think the third is Carol Moseley Braun(politician)

The first two choices suck IMO. There are so many black women out there that should be on that cover e.g. Oprah!!

Please...

Re: Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

I subscribe to Newsweek, but I think my subscription
ended last month (I forgot to resubscribe). /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Why are they on the cover?

By the way, the EDITOR of Newsweek is black. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

What is the editor's name?

Here is a link to the Newsweek story -

The Black Gender Gap

the article is about today's professional black women, her prospects for marriage and problems black women face in today's world. I found it to be very interesting.

Re: Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

Blkmane I never knew the editor was Black either. I know one of my Jounalism professors at City College said she was considering filing a Class A Action lawsuit because of the prejudice of that organization.

Lexi that article was a great read.

Re: Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

It's a great article, thanks for the info! I have to purchase this at the newstand tomorrow. Although if I had a choice I would not put those three on the cover. Picking one person from different genres, my choices would have been,

1) Condolezza Rice: The first female, African American United States National Security Security Advisor.

2) Dr. Mae Jemison: The first African American female to fly in space.

3) Angela Bassett: African American actress extrodinaire.

But I think those 3 choices would have been too deep for Newsweek! Maybe their intent was to keep it lite! /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

Wow Daviine! I loved that college. Students who are there now say that it has gotten even more competitive. I think that's great. This means it will draw only those who are serious about their studies. The creme de la creme /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sindeee as far as your post, Ditto girl! Those women are in a class all by themselves!!!

Re: Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

Daviine! I didn't know you graduated from City! Wow, this is my last semester..Great to see alum here...

Re: Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

Hi CarmenRose/images/graemlins/wave.gif

I've already graduated from the college /images/graemlins/smile.gif What are you majoring in? My majors were English and Journalism.

Re: Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

Thanks for the link!

I'm reading the article and it's so depressing..It really is. We have to stay strong.. /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

Re: Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

I could have sworn I told you that Carmen. Maybe I'm going cuckoo.... /images/graemlins/nuts.gif

I think I mentioned it in a thread where I was upset that I didn't realize that I had all those Dominican salons near me. I could have been getting my hair done instead of sleeping and playing cards between classes!!! /images/graemlins/frown.gif /images/graemlins/blush.gif /images/graemlins/look.gif

Re: Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

Re: Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

I enjoyed the article and don't really have a problem with the women they put on the cover.

I think the reason why a lot of college educated/highly successful women don't find mates is because they're looking for a black man who makes as much or more than them or has the same degree of education or higher than them and maybe overlooking the good black man who's a bus driver. /images/graemlins/frown.gif

I know some say it's as easy to marry a rich man as a poor man, but money/education is not a guarantee of happiness and I think to many women (of all races) think that it is.
All my friends that have degrees are prepared and in fact believe they will marry someone who makes less than them and/or doesn't have the same educational status as them. But like the women in this article they aren't really disappointed by it, they accept it and just hope to find someone who loves them and isn't a bum. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

That's a refreshing article, I'll have to buy the mag for the sake of saving the cover. I think Newsweek's choice of a successful singer, lawyer/talk-show host and politician is reasonable, no matter who they are. I'm just glad the gender-gap issue is covered and our faces are on that mag! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Also, I'm hoping more BM than BW read it as well....we're no longer settling to be Sulas! And being a successful professional doesn't necessarily make a BW a feminist/ I think our men tend to place us only in either category and that's part of the problem, IMO.

Take care,

Re: Newsweek\'s Cover Story -- Black Women

Just to clear things up the third person is not Carol Mosely Braun, the former first Black Female Senator of Illinois (who by the way just announced that she is running for President of the United States!!!)

The third girl is Mellody Hobson, president of Ariel Mutual Funds in Chicago. Mellody has done quite well for herself. I think that she worked her way up from an intern at the mutual funds company to president, and she is only somewhere between 30-35.

She also has carved out a second career for herself as a special correspondent on Good Morning America.

If only Black MEN did the same thing. I'm happily attached. But from what I've been told and observed most Black men these days aren't planning to marry female bus drivers either (not that there is anything wrong with bus drivers, just making a point).

One of my girlfriends went on a date with a guy who flat out told her that he wouldn't marry a woman who didn't make AT LEAST
$150,000 a year.

Now how superficial is that!?

And I know a LOT of men who will only marry a woman who they feel is their "equal".
