Hi I'm Chrissy (✿◠‿◠)
yeah, i had some people tell me when i was younger (family, in fact) that i was only supposed to wear my hair "up" (aka bun or ponytail) once a week, since any more than that was unhealthy. these same people have never had hair longer than NL/SL.just make sure that you change the position of your ponytail holder every once in a while....alternate between low, high, and side buns/ponytails.
it's pretty simple to find a DC....it's generally something that has a thick creamy consistency, and i wish i could say all DCs are labeled as such, but they aren't. in fact, i rarely see something i use as a DC say in the instructions to leave on for more than 5 minutes, although this is DEFINITELY how you get the best results and most moisture.
i don't want you to think they are ALL expensive....while my favorite for a long time, kenra moisturizing conditioner (aka kenra mc) sells for about $28 a liter, i switched to lustrasilk cholesterol, which is about $2 or 3 a jar, GVP conditioning balm (the matrix knockoff), which is about $5-7 for a big bottle, and even sometimes aussie moist, which is about $2.50 a bottle. you can find any of these at wal-mart or sally's.
oh, and it is VERY easy to become a PJ when you first start out....make sure to stick to that list @Poranges gave you upthread so you don't do what I didand go broke trying to get healthy hair. LOL
