How often do you shampoo your hair? Have you considered Cowashing(washing your hair with conditioner)? You may want to look into adding protein to your regimen as well. (Aphogee 2 minute, Redkin Anti-Snap, or some of the other light to medium protein treatments). Also, check out the stretching/transitioning threads for great info and advice about growing out your relaxer.

Hopefully some of the hair gurus can chime in to help you. Good luck and Happy Hair Growing!

Hey Girlie.

That seems like some breakage but not a drastic amount as far as I can see. Your hair does look dry though. Why don't you start with a basic regimen?

You'll need:

-Wide tooth comb
-Silk Scarf
-Moisturizing Shampoo
-Deep Conditioner
-Reconstructor
-Clarifying Shampoo
-Leave In
-Moisturizer
-Sealant

You'll only need one of each unless you want to be a PJ. :look:

Here's a regimen you can try out and see how it works:

-Shampooo & DC weekly.
-Reconstructor 1x monthly.
-Clarify 1x monthly.
-Apply Leave In after shampoo and AIR DRY, or style w/ indirect heat.
-Moisturize & Seal on dry hair and PROTECTIVE STYLE.
-Moisturize & Seal 1x-2x daily.

HOPE this helps you! :-) Happy Hair Journey.

Get a water based, creamy moisturizer. Coconut Oil is great but more of a sealant.

Some examples of creamy moisturizers:

-Shescentit Marshmallow Hair Cream
-Neutrogena Triple Moisture Silk Touch
-Profectiv Break Free
-Hairveda Whipped Ends
-Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer
-ORS Olive Oil Lotion

etc.

Do a bit of research and buy samples of products that spark your interest.

You can then use the coconut oil as a sealant, butters are VERY good too, especially for winter. I use Shescentit Seyani Butter during the winter and my ends are rarely dry. Good Luck!

Welcome girl. Im sorry 2 hear about your breakage issues. I have my regimen in the folki below. I also agree with comments above- especially the moisturizing conditioner. Also if you are growing out your relaxer (i assume this means your natural) i think you should look in the search engine above for routines of the many wonderful natural ladies on this site. Also, some people don't like coconut oil and it is very drying to their hair, especially if there is overuse. I agree you need a water based moisturizer. Rosemary oil can also be drying to some. Are you also deep conditioning?

Welcome aboard :-).

You don't mention how you are styling your hair. One definite piece of advice is to try hard to limit the amount of heat you are using if self-styling.

Also, check to make sure the tools you are using (combs, brushes, etc.) aren't damaging while you are wrapping your hair at night. Technique and amount of manipulation may play a part. Are you able to reduce the manipulation a bit more while improving your technique?

If all else fails, consider getting a check up to eliminate health related issues.

Welcome! Looks like you're off to a great start. Check check check! :yep:

I don't wanna be a killjoy but you might want to give the heat a rest for a while until your hair is on track like you want it. I think you can find many no heat styles to enjoy between here and youtube that will allow you to stop breakage and reach your goals quickly.

Have you considered protective styling? No heat styles where your ends are kept tucked away and manipulation is kept to a minimum?

For inspiration here is a thread where a lady kept a strict PS (protective style) for three years and went from teeny weeny afro to mid back length in 3 years. It takes commitment, but it lets us know just how much length we're sacrificing with heat, excessive manipulation, etc.

http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forum6/thread431294.html

You can also grow your hair out with weaves you've done yourself. Some of my favorite heads of hair did it that way. Look around and you'll find a way to make great hair care practices work for you.

=0 noo waay thats some amaziing growth!!!

but my hair isnt long enough to wear down after iwash it =/ people make fun of my napps -_- ill look into some more protective styles (= icant believe heat can be soo damaging to hair 0_o

welcome!

at the risk of sounding like a broken record, you REALLY should work on eliminating, or at least severely decreasing, your use of heat until your hair is in better shape. i promise you there are ways to still look cute, and even ways to rock straight or semi-straight hair, without the flat iron. prospurr4 is a member who hasn't used direct heat (aka blowdryers/flat irons) in YEARS and her hair always looks fab, like she came out of a salon. she is also relaxed (well, technically texlaxed) so she can give you great style ideas.

as far as protective styling, from the bit you wrote, you seem apprehensive about that too -- i think i saw it best described by wanakee (google her), who said that if air can dry out your skin, think about what it is doing to your ends. this could be why they are snapping off, so makes sense to hide them, no? read here to see what i mean:
You’ll notice that after you trim your hair, the ends seem dry again almost immediately! You’d think it was because of too much heat or blow-drying or maybe a bad perm. Although these treatments can sometimes dry out your hair, they only happen occasionally. The process that happens everyday, drying out your hair is...exposure to the air!

Yes, something that simple can be sapping your hair of life. Think for a moment; air dries your laundry, it cracks your house paint, it chaps your lips, it ashes your skin; it’s a serious drying agent. And when you wear you hair down regularly, air dries out your hair too. The movement of your hair against your clothing can dry your ends even more; and when ends get dry, they break off.

Picture an ear of corn with the husk on it. Did you ever notice how awful the silk looks that’s hanging on the outside of husk? But if you peel the husk down, the silk is soft, shiny and in excellent condition. The only difference is that the top silk has been exposed to the air, while the silk inside the husk has not. Air can cause damage to your hair.

your pics show that you are NL, so you may be wondering how you can do that without having a really small bun in the back -- try buying a phony pony (or even a pack of $2 braiding hair) and wrapping it into a bun, then using clips or hair toys to accessorize. you can weave it up, braid it up, wig it up, baggy it up....any of these will keep your ends hidden and make it easy to keep them moisturized. you can even turn that high side pony into a high side bun and voila -- protective style.

i would recommend leaving the DC on for longer than 10 minutes as well, and heat really helps it penetrate -- do you have a tabletop dryer or a heating cap? if not, search "homegrown steam treatment" to find a way to make a mini-sauna for your hair. results? SUPER moisturized strands, which will definitely help against the breakage. since you are starting out with unhealthy hair, maybe you can DC twice a week for a month or so, or until you see a noticeable difference in the moisture levels of your hair. the same goes for moisturizing and sealing -- twice a day, everyday, until your hair is healthier.

seriously, you might think we're kidding when we say some of this stuff, and i KNOW for sure it's overwhelming, but think about where you want your hair to be and make that plan to get it. it's not rocket science....just takes some dedication on the front end to start the healthy hair journey. six months from now, you'll be on auto-pilot, well on your way to whatever length you wanna be, and people will be asking YOU for the hair tips. ;)

HHG!

P.S. it's not as "jumbled" as it seems at first sight....the search really is your friend. find a term you wanna learn more about and search away!

awww shucks lilsparkle825 you had to go and mention wanakee and now I've got to find mostamaziing some more inspiration and find micarae's video :yep:

Half wigs and wigs are an excellent way to stay protected and stay cute. Especially if the half wig is worn with no hair out using a headband, etc.

the bolded reeaally had me geeeekin!!:bouncy::grin: lol then its settled im forsure going to hide my ends and wear protective styles. ihardly ever wear my hair down anywaay, considering the state its in now :nono:

but im very petrified of putting any type of weave in my hair o_O but ive got enough hair to make it look like a big pooofy bun though (= ihad stopped doing it becuz one of my many old hair beauticians said ponytails were bad and will break my hair off..

but even when iwas younger and had loong hair my grandma kept it up in loose twists and clipped up in barrets all the time.. no wonder my hair grew fastest.. :ohwell:

thaankyu for mentioning wanakee and prospurr4 (= they have really gorgeous hair:yep: and it makes perfect sense to hide the ends frm air. ill look into some more protective hair styles, but for now ima just take my ponytail and tuck the ends inside to make a bun:spinning:

ican buy a heat cap no problem =) my moms old table hair dryer fell and broke a few years ago =( but im not settled on a official deep conditioner though. ionly have a regular conditioner =/ are they the same thing? even without the "deep" before infront of it??

Deep conditioners penetrate more deeply. They'll usually state that you should leave them in then hair for 15 to 20 minutes in the directions.

Read this thread to get off to a great start on everything you might want to collect over the course of your journey: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/forum6/thread186229.html

I personally don't use a heating cap, although I think there is a definite benefit to having one. I like to cover my hair with a baggy and scarf and leave on over night. I find that my body heat gives me plenty of heat up there by the time I rinse out.

yeah, i had some people tell me when i was younger (family, in fact) that i was only supposed to wear my hair "up" (aka bun or ponytail) once a week, since any more than that was unhealthy. these same people have never had hair longer than NL/SL. ;) just make sure that you change the position of your ponytail holder every once in a while....alternate between low, high, and side buns/ponytails.

it's pretty simple to find a DC....it's generally something that has a thick creamy consistency, and i wish i could say all DCs are labeled as such, but they aren't. in fact, i rarely see something i use as a DC say in the instructions to leave on for more than 5 minutes, although this is DEFINITELY how you get the best results and most moisture.

i don't want you to think they are ALL expensive....while my favorite for a long time, kenra moisturizing conditioner (aka kenra mc) sells for about $28 a liter, i switched to lustrasilk cholesterol, which is about $2 or 3 a jar, GVP conditioning balm (the matrix knockoff), which is about $5-7 for a big bottle, and even sometimes aussie moist, which is about $2.50 a bottle. you can find any of these at wal-mart or sally's.

oh, and it is VERY easy to become a PJ when you first start out....make sure to stick to that list @Poranges gave you upthread so you don't do what I did :look: and go broke trying to get healthy hair. LOL

Hey OP- I'm a newbie too, and I know how easy it is to get frustrated and overwhelmed during this journey.

As everyone has said, I think you're mostly on the right track, with just a few tweaks:

-ELIMINATE heat from your regimen (at least til your hair is healthier)
-Add a deep conditioner at least once/week to your regimen
-Incorprate a protein treatment at least once/month (I use Aphogee 2 step on my 11 yr old- stops breakage in its tracks!)
-Moisturize with a water based product (I use infusium 23 mixed with braid spray and a lil honey), and seal afterwards, focusing on your ends, with an oil or butter
-PROTECTIVE STYLE, PROTECTIVE STYLE, PROTECTIVE STYLE!
^^
Without a doubt, this is how I've been able to retain 3" of growth in the last 4 months. I'm currently PSing in half wigs, but you could rock braids, extensions, buns, even a weekly rollerset will protect your ends and give your hair a break. Not to mention rollersets can straighten and stretch your hair, if you prefer that look better.

Whatever you do, don't give up! I'll be looking for you in 2012!
