Hey Ladies!
I am new to this forum and I was compelled to join after browsing thru so many topics.... It is so good to see women helping each other instead of bringing each other down :yep:

Anyway... About 3 and 1/2 years ago I followed what my friends were doing & started puttiing tracks in my hair & wearing sewn in weaves. For about a year it was going well until I took out my weave & a new beautician permed my hair (with TONS of new Growth!) all wrong!! When I came up from the sink, not only had most of my hair been eatin by the perm, but some of my new growth was gone as well , I mustve cried for days! I barely had enuff hair for a ponytail... Needless to say, I went back to my old beautician at her new shop & she promised to bring my healthy hair back...
So I decided to go natural, I wore braids for a few months then tried to wear it out but it was too short for me to handle so I wore sew-in weaves again for about a year, making sure I washed and DC it every 2-3 weeks. That really helped my hair grow nicely!!

Its been 2 yrs since I permed my hair & I have more length now & it has gotten thicker, but its not back to my old length yet & its still kinda thin. When my hair is nappy & in a ponytail (bush) it looks SO FULL AND THICK! but when I straighten it, it just thins out... why is that?
I now go to the domican salon every 2weeks and get a wash n set with a DC (garlic) and they blow out my roots. That has been going well except with no perm, the humidity ruins any straightness I have so when I take showers I have to layer my head gear lol!

I hope that with the help of this forum I can find some products for natural hair that will promote growth, but I am more concerned about my thickness... I hate thin hair!!!

Any Advice is much appreciated:grin:

do you moisturize your ends? that could be a reason for thinning ends.

Oh and wlecome to the forum!

Pardon me while I try to troubleshoot, but it seems to be that if you're natural(thick) and then you pressing/str8ing it makes it much thinner then you might just have fine/thin hair because I can imagine that 2 years is enough for your hair to do a turn around. I think mine did a 360 after the first six months.
I know my hair is very thick when in its natural state but thins out according to the way I press it. I consider myself to have fine hair with a mixture of thin, medium, and thick strands distributed all over my head.

You might want to try:

Castor Oil

B-5(Pantheothenic Acid) vitamins

Carrot juice

Some people swear by Biotin which is a vitamin also

Oh yes and try henna to add some color and temporary illusion of thick hair to your or you can do like me and use the neutral henna which is cassia. The key is to work with what cha have mami. We all have to travel down that road where we look and yearn for another head of hair. Experiment and see what works for you. HTH(Hope this helps!)

Hey Loca... Thanks for the response and the welcome. I do moisturize my roots a lot and I am guilty for neglecting my ends most of the time. I am going to get them trimmed a bit and then I will start to do that more often. How often should I be moisturizing them?

Klb... Thanks for the welcome girl:wave:

I was just now thinking of you and you know what that mean??????????????????????????????????????????

You're gonna be around for a long time welcoming people! Good grief!

Hush up Whips....you know I likes welcoming folks.:lachen:

You're welcome girl....that's bout all I can do for ya over here in the hair forum is welcome ya.:spinning: The other ladies are the hair experts.:yep:

i like to moisturize every day and seal in the moisture with castor oil. make sure your moisturizer is water based.

whipz gave some good advice too. heat can make your hair thinner over time.

Hey Whipz... Thanks so much for the advice and yea you're right about that being enough time for a turn around, but before I started perming my hair (in 2000) it was thicker than what it is now. However, I do agree with you, I most likely have the same texture of hair that you have. And by the way... your hair looks SOO NICE (and Thick)!

I am a little confused about this "Henna" I have seen a lot of threads about it though. What exactly is it? and you said you use a neutral type? Whats the difference?

Never knew I could take certain vitamins to promiote hair growth and I think my aunt uses a Castor Oil grease for her hair, I'll have 2 borrow it

Thanks! Well, you're in the hub of great hair products......good ole NYC. You can
access http://www.sams247.com/detail.aspx?ID=13290 for some Jamaican black castor oil and I think they have a store in NYC. You can also purchase some regular castor oil at your local health food store. I don't do grease because it sometimes clogs the pores but whatever works for you.

I use a version of henna that doesn't change or enhance the color of your hair. I just use cassia for the strengthening abilities plus some of the thickening abilities.

www.hennaforhair.com------you can read here about henna or you can do a search on the board and browse but some of the threads are looooooong!:spinning:

I also use a color gloss on my hair (as you know coloring sometimes enhances the diameter of your stands for a while) and that helps also. I encourage you to create an album at www.fotki.com to track your progress. Also, you can browse all the ladies albums provided that they have a password. If not available in the siggy, they can be found by going into the profile to retrieve the information.By doing this combined with trial and error, you will see whose hair you have the most in common with so that you can perhaps troubleshoot what is going on with your tresses.

Welcome to the forum! I agree with Whipz. I think that natural hair can mask thin hair for some people. But I agree that castor oil can help thicken things up, and some people swear by Boundless Tresses (BT) to thicken their hair. I hope you find what your hair needs here. There are so many hair veterans on this site with a wealth of knowledge.

My hair is thin too and I use to color my hair with a rinse ( blue black from Sebastian Cellophane) I loved this stuff years ago but I stop using this product because I want to try to grow my hair and see what was making my hair thinner and break off. I want the ladies from this thread to response!

:welcome:

my hair is thin too which is why i now texlax instead of bone straight relaxing. so when i straighten my hair it has some thickness to it. i don't straighten my hair often but when i do i usually wash it after about the second day, so when i shower i put a plastic bag over it with a scarf which usually helps keep the humidity out. i also use elucence volume clairifying poo before i decide to straighten which i think helps out with the volume :)

After going natural, people couldn't understand why I classified my hair as thin.:nono: Well after being permed for most of my life I knew I did not have a lot of strands on my head. My hair is thin.

So if I'm washed and swelled my hair looks full because its a bush.
After flat ironing. My hair is paper thin. :perplexed

Just the way it is. Hereditary!!!!:ohwell:

Welcome.

Do you comb your hair a lot? Do you prepoo? How often do you DC and for how long?

Thin ends mean that some of your hair is breaking off. If it breaks off in certain areas it makes the remainder of your hair look thin. Even growth = thickness. This is what you must concentrate your regimen on.

Do you clarify your ends? product builds up there too making them brittle and susceptile to breakage.
