Hi ladies I have been a lurker for the past two years and have really gotten a lot of good advice from this board. I decided to make it official tonight and make my first post.
I need some advise about my daughters hair, due to swimming this summer her hair had some breakage right in the middle back portion. Her hair is about bra strap length, but right in the middle about 3 inches across it is at least 4 inches shorter. She doesnt want to let me even it out, but wants to try and let it grow back. She is a teenager who has always had long hair, so she is not open to cutting it, though I did trim it. Anyone have any ideas on ways I can spot treat her hair in the breakage areas? I am thinking about getting a small track sewn in while I work on it. Because I know she wont want to wear her hair up until it grows back. Any suggestions?

Welcome and enjoy. I myself am still a newbie (I lurked for about the same time as well) :D

Welcome newbie,
don't cut all her hair short just for a couple of spots. Use some loose buns, ponytails with scrunchies the safe hair ones without the metals. no blowdryers, curling irons, etc... maybe some medium box braids would work but not too tight and massage her scalp every night with light oil like jojoba, or monoi oil. hth

Welcome. It's important to use a clarifying shampoo to remove chlorine after swimming. I remember reading in a magazine that applying a lite conditioner to the hair before swimming is also a good idea.

Thanks for the advise, needless to say she will not be swimming anytime soon. Now I just have to find a good weekly regimine for her hair. My hair is very different than hers, so I know what I do for my hair will not work for hers. Anyone have a regimine they care to share, I need an idea of what products to get and how often I should apply them. Does the idea of a sew in track sound like one that may help?

Welcome aboard! Lucia has said it all very well.

Lucia...Well said!

Wow!!! You have been lurking for a while, I am glad you came out of hiding.
As for your daughter, I agree that you should just keep the hair in loose ponytails and buns that will keep that area covered up until it grows back.
hope that helps

Welcome Cheche!

Awwww, don't stop her from swimming if she really loves it. I'm an avid swimmer, snorkeler and diver, whenever I get the chance and I don't let haircare stop me! I try to wear a swim cap, but that thang doesn't stay on my head 'cause I'm a wild woman in the water . . . and even the best swim cap will have some leakage. Below are my suggestions:

Make sure she first saturates her hair with tap water and lightly coats it with a good conditioner before swimming in either pool or sea and rinse it good with tap water every time she exits the water, if possible. The key is to put up a barrier to the hard chemicals and minerals and prevent them from hardening on the hair and rinsing thoroughly after each dip in the water can go a long way to remove the "hard stuff" before they set in the hair.

Wash hair with shampoo at end of each swimming day to remove chlorine from the pool or minerals from the see. I shampoo every night when I swim (this is what I do when I'm on vacation, wash with 'poo every night) and follow with conditioner. Doesn't have to be clarifying 'poo, I just use regular 'poo. Indeed, my swimming hair buddies are nexxus therappe shampoo and nexxus humectress. I wash with therappe and use humectess as a leave - in to air dry. Add a little bit of oil to the ends for extra pampering.

Then in the morning before swimming, first saturate hair with tap water then apply another light coat of humectess to hair before swimming -- this allows hair to soak up "good" water like a sponge and therefore prevents or at least slows down the hair from absorbing the chlorine or mineral water from pool or sea. Washing out the cholorine and minerals every day with shampoo prevents them from hardining on the hair and causing breakage.

For the "weak" spot with breakage, I suggest applying castor oil to that area of the scalp to promote healing and of course, baby those ends with moisture and oil to prevent additional breakage.

HTH

Welcome, Cheche!

The ladies are on the job with GREAT suggestions!

One thing I wanted to mention, when I tried to wear weave, it itched & my hair broke off, so if you do this, just watch your daughter & her scalp to be sure she's not having a 'reaction' to it.
