Hi ladies, I recently used lye for the first time (mizani), and it started burning after not very long so I went ahead and washed it out, well my hair is still wavy and the roots look like they only straightened a little, so far I've heard bad things about switching back and forth so I would like to know for next time what can I do to get my hair nicely relaxed without burning??? Do I need to try a milder formula(I used regular), or should adding olive oil help? Should I base my scalp too??

Input?? Alot of you use lye so what do you do not to burn?

I would switch to a milder formula. I've always heard that Mizani is a very strong relaxer that will get your hair bone straight.

Thanks girl,I will...it's a shame I bought the large container only to have to get something else

I ended up having to switch from Mizani because it made me burn very quickly also so it would have to be rinsed quickly & my hair wouldn't get very straight.

You should definitely base your scalp. Affirm makes a great base. It's a purple gel and I think it's called Protecto. My hair has never burned with it. Another option is vaseline. When I used to do my own relaxers, I used that and that worked pretty well.

Thanks girls!!
So instead of buying the mild, you guys would just try and base your whole scalp next time??

I'm natural, but years ago when I relaxed and it seemed like my scalp would start burning as soon as I opened the tub, I would double base my hair the day before and again the day of the relaxer. By double base I mean part each section from ear to ear and base then from front to back. Overkill? yes but i burned less.

Back in the day I was doing the no-lye and yes they took every time. My over-basing did not prevent the relaxer from doing it's thing. I'm not suggesting that you switch back to no lye. If I ever relax again I'll be using a lye relaxer. You may want to do some research on corrective measures too for your touch up to deal with that "underprocessing". Good luck.
