I AM A NEW MEMBER WITH ALOT OF QUESTIONS. TO SPARE ME THE TIME AND AGGRIVATION OF HAVING TO ASK ALOT OF QUESTIONS, I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT ADVISE CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE TO A SISTER JUST STARTING OUT. I JUST REGISTERED WITH LHCF AND I LOVE IT, BUT I HAVE ALOT OF QUESTIONS. PLEASE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS FOR ME.

1. WHAT SUPPLEMENTS SHOULD I TAKE AND WHY
2. WHAT MISTAKES HAVE YOU MADE THAT I SHOULD LEARN FROM.
3. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF STRETCHING OUT MY PERMS.
4. WHY SHOULD I TRIM MY HAIR EVERY SIX MONTHS INSTEAD OF SIX WEEKS.
5. WHAT IS THE LIME AND COCONUT WATER THING THAT I WAS READING ABOUT AND WHAT DOES IT DO.

IF SOMEONE COULD KINDLY ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FOR MY I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT. MY HAIR TYPE IS 3C AND IT'S ABOUT 3 INCHES BEFORE MY BRA STRAP. I WASH IT TWICE A WEEK IT KEEP IT FROM GETTING OILY AND LOOKING DULL.

Well, I'm relatively new here so I'm in the major trial and error stage myself but I'll share what I've garnered so far:

1. What supplements should you take? That is largely contigent upon your existing regimen and diet. Typically for hair growth, the faves seems to be Bioton, Kelp, Silica, EFA's, and Patothentic Acid. I'm sure I left some out the other ladies will fill in the blanks.

2. WHAT MISTAKES HAVE YOU MADE THAT I SHOULD LEARN FROM? <ul type="square">[*]STAY AWAY FROM THE FREQUENT USE OF HEATED IMPLEMENTS ON THE HAIR. That has probably been my most dramatic change since I joined. My flat iron is taken out about twice a month now instead of 6 days a week.[*]Not washing/condition washing my hair frequently. My hair would get very dry and unruly. Funny I used to these type of washes 15 years ago and didn't know there was a science behind it, just did them because it made my hair easier to comb out![*]Not being patient w/my hair, starting a routine but never giving it opportunity to provide results before I moved onto something else.[/list]
3. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF STRETCHING OUT MY PERMS? From my understanding to primarily prevent the unnecessary overlapping of chemicals becuase of there not being adequate new growth.

Be back with the rest shortly, I'm at work!

Welcome to the forum!!

One thing that you should always remember is that not everything works for everybody.

People trim their hair every 6 months because the find that they need to trim it. They don't trim their hair every relaxer just because that's what their stylist says. They trim it as needed. But if you prevent the split ends and thinning down you will not have to trim your hair that much.

Welcome! Here is just some ideas...

1. WHAT SUPPLEMENTS SHOULD I TAKE AND WHY

I recommend a good quality multi-vitamin, just for overall health, before anything else. You can also take biotin, MSM, evening primrose oil, flaxseed oil, and a variety of others too. My recommendation here is to start out with the recommended dosage on the bottle and then slowly increase the amount. Sometimes people start out taking ridiculously high dosages and then end up with stomach cramps and skin breakouts..to spare you that pain, just start low and work up to some of the dosages you read about. Also, I would add one supplement at a time, so if you do have an adverse reaction, you'll know which one is causing it.

2. WHAT MISTAKES HAVE YOU MADE THAT I SHOULD LEARN FROM.

Buying products off of a rave (everyone is going crazy over it) and then having it not work for me, and wasting my money. Not to be a pessimist, but usually, when something sounds too good to be true...it probably is. Take the time out to read labels on the back of products. I've found that if certain ingredients (i.e. lanolin, certain cones) don't agree with my hair and scalp, and can save myself a lot of heartache by avoiding products with those high on the list.

3. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF STRETCHING OUT MY PERMS.

To avoid overlapping/overprocessing and to give the scalp a break, there are some threads on this.

4. WHY SHOULD I TRIM MY HAIR EVERY SIX MONTHS INSTEAD OF SIX WEEKS.

Personally, I can't wait six months to trim. I don't think you should cut every six weeks either, but I think the point of this is to avoid unecessary trims, which clip off any length you are gaining in that time period. The key is to learn when YOU think you should have a trim, and only have it trimmed at that point.

5. WHAT IS THE LIME AND COCONUT WATER THING THAT I WAS READING ABOUT AND WHAT DOES IT DO.

Its supposed to be a temporary straightener but I've never tried it so I can't offer too much here.

I have to go, but I sent you a private message that I think will be helpful too.

Best wishes

I take biotin(6 mcg) and msm (2000mg) to help with hair growth. I also take a multi, a spoonful of Brewer's yeast for health.

2. WHAT MISTAKES HAVE YOU MADE THAT I SHOULD LEARN FROM.

Alot....not washing frequently enough, combing my hair too often and too rough, wearing my hair in super tight ponytails, not moisturizing enough, not conditioning enough, perming already permed hair, the list goes on. I have changed my ways drastically.
3. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF STRETCHING OUT MY PERMS.

I'm noy permed now, but I think generally the more chemical treatments you can avoid, the better. It's different for everyone though cause some people find they get breakage if they wait too long as a result of the different textures.
4. WHY SHOULD I TRIM MY HAIR EVERY SIX MONTHS INSTEAD OF SIX WEEKS.

Another thing that is an individual preference. If you wait longer, you retain more length, but if you have split or damaged ends, you might need to trim more often. The idea is to keep you ends as healthy as possible so that you don't need to trim as often, only when necessary.
5. WHAT IS THE LIME AND COCONUT WATER THING THAT I WAS READING ABOUT AND WHAT DOES IT DO.

Sorry, I haven't tried this one yet but I hear it is supposed to relax your natural curl. I might give it a go sometime.
