Can you use a neutralizing shampoo to get rid of build up when your not retouching?

Can you use a neutralizing shampoo to get rid of build up when your not retouching?

I've never tried using neutralizing shampoo to get rid of build up. Heck, I don't even own any (since I get my touch ups done at the salon).

I love using gel to give my hair body, but I don't think my shampoo is getting rid of all that buildup. What should I do?
