My hair is getting longer and I want to minimize my tangles. Do you prefer to detangle your hair before you shampoo or after. I'm also dealing with the new growth which can also cause problems. I find I'm focusing alot on "babying" my ends to protect them especially since I just recently got a trim and i don't want to be tugging, and pulling to detangle my hair which leads to split ends. I just want to make it as smooth as possible and I was thinking about using hair lady's method of putting my hair in about six braids and then using diluated shampoo and washing my hair this way. Often I just jump in the shower and wash my hair with it all open, exposed but I'm concerned because it is getting longer and i want to cut down on the tangles. There are some beautiful heads of long hair on this board. What do you do to minimize tangles?

My hair tangles like crazy. When I go to wash my hair I get into the shower and flip my head down so all of my hair is in front of me. Then I let the shower soak it as I gently and carefully untangle it. First with my fingers, then with a wide toothed comb. When it is all untangled I add shampoo (or conditoner if I'm co-washing) I wash my hair with it all hanging down in front. That's the only way I can get it all clean without tiring out my arms, and that way I'm sure I've completely rinsed.

I usually get out of the shower and throw a towel over my head and put on a robe. I go heat up oil and honey and mix it with my conditoner for a deep conditoner. I deep conditon witha platic cap on for about an hour. Then I get back in the shower and rinse the conditoner out with my hair in front the same way I shampoo. I detangle with my fingers as I rinse.

Then when I get out of the shower I part my hair down the middle and carefully comb it out.

I only detangle while rinsing out the conditioner from my hair under the running water from the shower head. The running water helps the tangles just fall out. It's the best way I've found to do it. If I don't do it that way, the only other way I'll do it is after I"ve conditioned and using Elucence MB as a detangler. It's the best detangler I've ever used. When I use Elucence I can glide a fine tooth comb through my curls easily.

I do it this way also when rinsing out my conditioner while standing under the shower. I also use a shower comb (like a Jilbere) to detangle with the help of the force of the water. It's so easy this way.

Afterwards, I use a good leave-in that detangles even more, although by this time my hair is already detangled. My comb just slips through even with stretching my relaxer.:)

I get in the shower and rinse my hair for a while. Then I take a shower comb and gently detangle right under the force of the shower water. It's so true that it really helps the tangles come out. After that I cowash and run the comb through my hair again with the conditioner in it. At that point the comb glides through. If I use shampoo, I do it in the very beginning, before combing my hair out underneath the shower water.
