Need long hair henna help-The tangles, the mess

I don't necessary use henna, but i do use cassia. What i have learned is that, when making a paste for your hair, its ALWAYS best to make a smooth paste consistency (meaning NO CLUMPS), for a successful wash out.

I also agree with CURLICARIB, add the tea last the helps to achieve a smooth paste, from there you would be able to tell if you need more or less tea (depending how much of a paste you have mixed). HTH.

my hair isnt long but ... lol

but this is what I do.

i rinse initially with just water to get the first bit of henna out, then I add a cheepie condish like VO5 to a section of my hair, work it in and finger detangle, then twist it up then do that for the rest of my hair.

then I stand under the shower again with my hair twisted up in sections and rinse

then, I rinse each section. I may have to do this 3 or so times, but when Im finished Im done, detangled and everthing.

maybe u can try this next time around

I do a variation of this. :yep: I start with oil (castor, jojoba, or evoo.... whatever I have on hand) massaged into my hair. Then I apply the henna gloss or the henna paste and let it sit. After 1-5 hours or so, I rinse in the sink for a long time making sure to get my scalp (any henna left on will make me itch.) Then I start to slather on cheapie conditioner. I don't trust Moisture Milks since I got burned (literally) so I opted for Suave coconut. I work it in, just smoosh (lol don't judge me! :look: it's a word  ) it in, let it sit, then rinse it out. I have to do that on average 3-5 times depending on which I used (gloss vs. paste.)

After all of that is done, I add a DC to put moisture back. If I do a henna gloss I can skip this step. I did this when relaxed (not as often) and I do it now that I'm natural. Hope this helps.

This may very well be your problem. I do a hot oil treatment with coconut, honey and rosemary oil then shampoo with Dr. Bronner before my henna.

I think it is beneficial to have some type of oil in the hair athough people say it harms the dye release. The benefits seem to outwiegh the harm.

Also have you thought of adding yougurt? They call it curd on the henna packages. I did that the first couple times I henned

What she said is true for me as well. I do an oil treatment overnight before i henna in the morning. I mix my henna with oil, conditioner, coconut milk and hot tea for my water. I rinse the oil out for about 5 to 10 minutes then I towel blot my hair then add my henna and leave it on for 3 hours. I then rinse out by adding more conditioner to my hair until it's out and water is running some what clear. I don't wash with shampoo because of the tangles however,I do cowash with a clarifying conditioner. Then I do a dc.
